Transcript of Internet of Things - introduction
What is innovation?
For corporations:
„The use of new ideas or current thinking in a different context that
results in change which delivers value”
For individuals:
„Anything which changes our behavior”
IoT is profoundly changing both worlds:
business and personal
What is IoT?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network
connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_Things
Allowing for interactive
representation of any physical
object…
…in digital space.

Where is IoT today? (end of 2015)
• IoT is still in its infancy
• Big organizations and corporations entered the „war over standards” period
• Both hardware and software are evolving fast
• IoT market penetration is growing but it is still just the beginning
• There are many advanced solutions, products and appliances but we are far from end-to-end, meaningful integration
• Many business cases are yet to be discovered
Example #1: Knowing not guessing
Making sense of data and finding non obvious connections:
Challenge:
• There are many senior citizens needing
• At the same time there is limited number of healthcare workers
• How to provide the highest possible service quality? How to prioritize the needs? How to be proactive?
Solution:
• Sensors, real time integration, big data, predictive analytics, medical knowledge…
Example #2: Keeping connection
Next big thing for manufacturers:
Challenge:
• After a physical object leaves the factory producer is loosing the connection with it
• How to monitor full lifecycle of the product? How to get the feedback? How to improve the product?
Solution:
• Augmenting products with sensors & RFID tags, cloud platform, analytics
Example #3: Preventing failures
Predictive analytics based on IoT data:
Challenge:• Maintenance requires a lot of effort, attention and most of the time is reactive
• Fixing already broken things is way more expensive than preventing replacements
• How to monitor performance in real time? How to find out which part should be repaired/exchanged? How to lower the costs of maintenance?
Solution:• Gathering data about every crucial element, predictive analytical models, continues
monitoring
Example #4: Digitizing preferences
Using digital profiles for better user experience:
Challenge:
• Many of our preferences can be captured, digitized and used for our benefit
• How to make a full and meaningful use of the data associated with our digital profiles?
Solution:
• End-to-end integration, data sharing, security, governing policies, IoT-enabled devices
Example #5: Orchestrating everything
Making cities smarter:
Challenge:
• Soon majority of people will live in the cities
• Even the smallest improvement in electricity consumption or public transportation makes a huge difference.
• How to capture, process, understand and act upon the data generated by the „city”?
Solution:
• Sensors, integration, multidisciplinary approach, collaboration

analytical models, aggregators, deep
learning, cognitive computing, artificial
intelligence, big data, analytics
Software platform
Middleware, brokers, data storage, data
warehouses, analytical engines, cloud
platforms, streaming platforms, business

Sensors and hardware platforms
Commercial products
Security
• How to secure hardware?
• How to secure data on end points?
• How to secure data transmition?
• How to secure central data storage?
• How to secure access to the individual components?
• How to assure that the data is not corrupted?
• How to restrict the access to the data?
• How to govern the data?
Privacy
• Which data can/cannot be collected?
• How user can restrict data sharing?
• Who will have access to my data?
• To whom IoT data belongs?
• When my IoT data can be used?
• Who is controlling the data collection process?
• How can I delete my IoT data?
Limitations & Concerns
• Power consumption and battery life
• Software updates and device management
• Network failures and connectivity range
• Data collection, analysis and retention
• Scalability
• Interoperability
• End-to-end business integration and data exchange
Thank you!
