A problem with research

Put the question in a survey, and respondents will tick the answers that make them look good.

Claiming to be green is the politically correct thing to say.

Page 6: Get Going with Green - Closing the Sustainability Gap

When people claim they are green, it is because they already have the knowledge that they need to change their behaviors.

They are concerned, but they feel powerless.

Green is not only a reputation opportunity for corporations, rather it is a marketing opportunity in itself.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
If we want to close the Sustainability Gap, we have to shift the balance. The high proportion of Dark Green consumers in China tells us that enhanced education about sustainability is not the need of the moment, creating greater relevance is. The openness that many consumers have to adopting more sustainable brands tells us that green is not only a reputation opportunity for corporations, rather it is a marketing opportunity in itself!

Future Pathways for Behavior Change

Products, not policy

Everyday, not just Earth Day

Personal, not planet

Incentive, not invective

Choice, not constraint

Conscious, not conspicuous

Collaborate, not confront

Pluralize, not polarize

Dialogue, not decree

Mainstream, not model

Page 32: Get Going with Green - Closing the Sustainability Gap

Mainstream, not model

There are plenty of mainstream green behaviors that warrant active encouragement:

Cycling, sleeping on straw mats in summer, carrying one’s own water flasks, etc.

Rewarding these behaviors would encourage those who think sustainability is only for the wealthy or altruistic.

Page 33: Get Going with Green - Closing the Sustainability Gap

Products, not just policy

Is there anything in your existing products and services that can be highlighted as being sustainable?

Do manufacturing and / or transportation innovations result in less impact on the environment?

If they do, let the consumer know.

And then start innovating.

Page 34: Get Going with Green - Closing the Sustainability Gap

Everyday, not just Earth Day每一日,而不仅是地球日

This is important to overcome the challenge of tokenism.

We need innovation, not abstinence.

Page 35: Get Going with Green - Closing the Sustainability Gap

Incentive, not invective

Create incentives for both individual and community adoption.

Solar heaters with toilets!Additional marks for spreading the word in your family!

Page 36: Get Going with Green - Closing the Sustainability Gap

Dialogue, not decree

When the engagement is based on compliance, all we do is follow the rules and forget about it. But we talk about brands all the time.

Closing the sustainability gap calls for conversations.

The chopstick forest got Beijing talking. No law banning disposable chopsticks was required.
