Fakenham Town Band has certainly had a busy summer season! The last few months have seen the band booked most weekends, playing at venues such as Sandringham, King’s Lynn, Wells and even as far as Oulton Broad, near Lowestoft. The summer was rounded off with a weekend of very successful engagements, at Colkirk church on 24th September (one of our favourite venues for the acoustics!) and then at Blakeney church on 25th September for the Methodist Songs of Praise. Thank you to everyone who has come to support the band over this season.
Looking ahead, the band has a full Christmas diary. As well as traditional carol playing (see website for details) the band will be playing in Costessey church on 10th December, and then the following weekend the band will present their annual Grand Christmas Concert on Sunday 18 December at 2.30pm. See below for details.
This year the band has released a new CD – Bold as Brass – which is made up of live recordings of the band at concerts over the last two years. Priced at just £5, these are available to buy at every concert or can be bought online (P&P will be added).
The band continues to welcome new players, both experienced and beginners. The beginner band meets on Mondays 7pm to 8.30pm and main band is on Thursdays from 7.30pm to 10pm – both at Trap Lane Pavilion. More information on 01328710019.
Finally, we would like to wish all our friends and supporters a very merry
Christmas and we look forward to seeing you on the 18th!

From the editor:
We Wiiiiiiiissssshhh you a Merry Christttmass ... Its nearly
here again and the ‘Big Man’ will be making his list and checking it twice ... may be its time to step back, look at ones self and check on which side you appear taking corrective action as required!
I am sure many people, like myself, who attended Melton Primary School in the sixties and before (there are quite a few of us) are reminded of the Christmas procedure! For that was what it was, beginning with the annual production of paper chains. The planning would take place for the performance of the Nativity by Miss Hunt’s class and the competition to be Mary. This was a role for which I wasn’t considered ‘Holy’ enough and was awarded to my friend Valerie although I did make Angel grade and Kevin tells me he made it to shepherd and never wanted to be Mary. Singing practice would take place in preparation for the Carol Service led by Mr Thorne accompanied by his wife on the piano. The ‘procedure’ was to sing as loudly as we could; tunefulness was not an issue here with the emphasis being on volume with particular attention to the words ‘wiiiisssshhhh’
and ‘Christtttmas being paramount. Then there was the preparation with the construction of a temporary stage. This meant we didn’t have any desks for a few days - for this is what the stage consisted of. Then the parents were allowed in; this only happened twice a year, the other occasion being Open Day in the summer. Otherwise parents were strictly forbidden and banished to the school gates.
The Christmas celebrations would culminate with a party in the hall, the stage having been dismantled and returned to the less elevated positions of desks. We sat on long benches at trestle tables dining on sandwiches, fluorescent pink wafer biscuits and red jelly distributed from enormous bowls by Mr Thorne Himself. This conjures up a vision of a Dickensian workhouse with Mr Thorne playing the role of Mr Bumble the Beadle. It makes one wonder if anyone ever dared to ask for more and if so what became of them.
Then it was down with the decorations after which the children were dispatched home for Christmas.
Happy Days!
Sandra

News from 2534 Squadron Article prepared by Brian Keerie
Local Air cadet awarded prestigious
regional award for Sporting achievement. F a k e n h a m ( 2 5 3 4 Squadron) Air Cadet Sergeant Alice Hunter (17) h as received the Central and East of England
regional award for her considerable contribution to sports in the Air Training Corp. There are six regions in the Air Cadets in the United Kingdom and winning this award places Alice in the top six female cadets who participate in the seven core sports the ATC promotes, namely cross country, football, rugby, netball, swimming, hockey and athletics. Alice has won her Corp “Blues” in hockey by being chosen to represent the Air Cadets national team. This year she has also been in the team for the regional swimming, cross country and athletics. She has also taken part in Norfolk and Suffolk inter-squadrons netball and swimming competitions. Fakenham Mayor visits Air Cadet Squadron Councillor Jeremy Punchard visited 2534 (Fakenham) Squadron Air Training Corps to see the cadets undergoing various activities and training on October 31st 2011. The Mayor was introduced to volunteer staff, both uniformed and civilian and all the cadets where he viewed, discussed and actively took part in some aspects of the
training. During the evening cadets were being trained in First Aid, the use of Radios and Adventure Training, mostly centred around a recent Duke of Edinburgh Award Bronze Expedition. As a retained Fireman, Councillor Punchard has experience, real understanding of the need and a lot of experience which he discussed with the cadets as he took part in the training. Pilot Officer Brian Keerie, who was on hand to escort the Mayor during his visit, commented ‘Counci l lor Punchard appreciated our Air Cadet Core Aim in that we want to give training that can be of use in the Services or in Civilian Life. It was fantastic that he has a great understanding of what we were doing because of his career in the Fire Service and that he fully supports our efforts in introducing these skills to the Fakenham and area youth.’ Officer Commanding 2534 Squadron Flight Lieutenant Nick Potter added ‘The Fakenham Air cadets have a long and very co-operative relation with the Fakenham mayors and Town Council. It was a great pleasure meeting Councillor Punchard and we want to continue to work with the Council in future community events

The other two, thankfully both boys, were not without problems when they arrived. While one had to be tranquilised after the operation for further attention as he started to bleed at the operation site, the other needed major surgery as his “equipment” was not in the right place. These 2 little boys are now back with the lady who has them confined so that she can socialise them and plans are ongoing to catch the remaining kitten as soon as possible.
Although progress can now be seen with the re-building of Stephanie’s cottage, life does not run smoothly in Dilham. A very large branch came off a tree in a field opposite and damaged the telephone line. After nearly two days without a phone line we eventually managed to get calls transferred to my line. We hope that everyone who rang at this time, were able to get through later in the week. The line has now been repaired.
One of the last calls I received was from a young man who was reluctantly looking to re-home his cat. Although micro chipped and wearing a collar requesting people not to feed him, Smudge had been missing since June. (Smudge had gone missing before and, that time, was found in Ipswich in very poor condition.) This time he arrived home late at night in
the arms of a neighbour (minus his collar) who handed him back stating “this is your cat”. He was quite unwell and in need of veterinary treatment. It was apparent that the person who returned Smudge had taken him in but decided to return him to his owner once there was a problem with his health. As there had been no sightings of the cat while missing, the owner assumes the person kept him indoors. Smudge’s owner now feels that it will better to find him a new home as, when he is well again and is let out, he will return to the other house and disappear again. Although he now lives in the city, Smudge previously lived in the country with more space to roam so this would probably suit him better. Smudge is now being kept indoors, is on our waiting list and also on that of other cat charities, until one of us has a space to take him in.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

at the last of the famous Briston Organ Shows for this year, and lovers of live music packed the hall to capacity to hear him performing on the Roland Digital Organ, and between numbers, he raised howls of laughter with his anecdotes and cheeky jokes! He weaved his musical magic with a selections from 'Les Miserables', 'Mamma Mia' and Barry Manilow, an upbeat County-style 'Ghost Riders In The Sky', hits made famous by Bette Midler, some lively Marches, and loads more good music to suit all tastes. As usual, happy listeners said the show was 'the best yet' - but then they say that at every show! The next event is on Friday February 3rd. 2012, when top organist and Big Band leader James Goff will be entertaining - he is also a great player, and again, has a wicked sense of humour! Tickets are already selling well - you can get yours now, or alternatively just reserve them for payment nearer the date by 'phoning Carol on 01263 860844. Also, if you would like full details of all the eight shows for 2012, which all feature top organ or keyboard stars, again 'phone Carol and she will email or post the details to you. North Walsham and District A recent call to Stephanie highlights how quickly problems occur with abandoned unneutered female cats. The lady in question had seen a cat in her garden earlier this year with a litter of 3 kittens. Although not a true feral the cat was very nervous and it was taking time to gain her trust. She was very concerned as not only were the kittens now 7 months old and had not been socialised, but also the mother cat had recently produced 7 more kittens. Although she was happy to take responsibility for the mother cat and the 3 older kittens once neutered, she was desperate for any help we could offer.
Stephanie arranged for a trap to be taken to the lady’s garden in order to catch the mother cat and the younger kittens and for them to take up residence in one of our pens. The mother cat was neutered and, once the kittens were old enough to feed by themselves, she was released back to the original garden. The 7 kittens have all thrived and will soon be available for adoption. The lady has been socialising the mother cat and also managed to confine the older 3 kittens ready for them to be neutered. It had already been established that there was at least one female among them and at 7 months old it was essential to get them to the vets. One of our fosterers made an appointment at the vets and agreed to take them there. Unfortunately, on the day, the known female managed to escape.
fairly tolerant of human beings and if you stand and quiet they may approach you within a few yards. We were about to head for home when looking up, we saw a Short Eared Owl flying in off the sea. It perched on a fence post for a few minutes, but soon attracted the unwelcome attention of a group of Crows and after giving a flying exhibition dodging it's tormentors it made off towards Cley. The Short Eared Owl is
one of our favourite birds and in the winter often hunts during the day. The number of birds over-wintering in Norfolk in recent years has fallen, but this winter many have been arriving and hopefully some will settle down with us. To round off the day we called in at Cley centre for a cup of tea, in time to see a Black Redstart hoping about on the roof of the old centre winter isn’t so bad .

I can't say that November is my favourite month with the weather getting colder and the days shorter, but for a birdwatcher in Norfolk, winter has many compensations. In the last few weeks migrants from the north have been arriving in increasing numbers. A few weeks ago, just after daybreak, several flocks of birds passed over Briston. In the dawn light I first thought they were Starlings, but they were flying very purposefully and on opening the window I heard the unmistakable 'chaker, chack, chack' call of the Fieldfare. A week later a small number of Redwings flew over the playing field. On a walk around Felbrigg Park we found a flock of Bramblings. This colourful finch with it's orange breast and shoulder patches is always a joy to see. On the coast the Pink Feet Geese are already established at Holkham and flocks of Brent Geese have taken up residence on the coastal fields and saltmarsh. Three Bewick's Swans spent a day at Cley before heading inland to the Fens. Wigeon are everywhere along the coast, an attractive duck especially the male
with it's cheastnut head and yellow forehead. The more elegant Pintail is usually to be found in the same area along with the smaller Teal with the male birds sporting chestnut heads and dark green eye patches. Hen Harriers have arrived from the north and in the late afternoon are to be found coming into roost at several sites, often with those Marsh Harriers that have decided to stay in Norfolk for the winter rather than fly south to warmer climes.
As every birder knows now and then, often by luck than judgement, you can enjoy a really good day out when the birds you expect to see show up and a few you didn't as well. One beautiful sunny day we headed out to Salthouse beach. On the way we called in at Cley beach and watched the Gannets flying by, often stopping to make a spectacular dive on to some unlucky fish. On the shingle bank we were treated to a flypast of Snow Buntings, the first we have seen since March. On to Salthouse where the first birds we saw was a large flock of Linnets which soon left. Then to our delight we spotted four Shorelarks which had probably arrived in the last few days from Scandinavia. They are truly charismatic birds with a striking yellow and black pattern. They are

Our October speaker was George Rockingham from the animal charity PACT, based near Hingham in Norfolk. In his talk he explained why the charity had been formed and how it has developed over the years. The charity caters for all animals that are in need of a home and when possible try to find a good home for them but unfortunately some animals cannot be rehomed and need care for the rest of their life. It was such an interesting talk that we plan to visit the sanctuary next year.
In November we celebrated our third birthday with wine and a birthday cake. It was also our AGM and a time to reflect on what we have achieved over the past year and to think about speakers and activities for next year.
We have had several successful table-
top sales, held monthly at the Copeman Centre, and have been told that our sausage rolls, scones and cakes are

personnel to be trained specifically for HEMS missions. The extra room in these newer helicopters also allows for a family member to travel with minors in the event of a medical emergency. From the middle of 2012, the East Anglian Air Ambulance aims to be the first established air ambulance charity to be able to operate at night. This will vastly improve our service capability, especially in attending missions during the dark winter months.
It may be surprising to hear that these major developments have been achieved without any Government or National Lottery funding and that the EAAA are entirely funded by the generous people of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. It currently costs over £4.2 million per year to keep their vital service flying. This equates to every person in the four counties that the EAAA covers paying a little over a pound a year, to keep our essential service flying.
Despite these times of financial austerity, the public support received is overwhelming and unwavering. However, with aviation costs rising and our wish to further expand the service we provide, the way we create awareness for our cause has never been more important. This is why we are offering to visit businesses, organisations, schools, clubs or any social groups that may be interested in having a speaker from the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The talks are tailored to the many different audiences that we address, but they always remain informative and insightful.

Briston Parish Council MOB Rule
Some have described the meeting of the November 7th as “Lively” others as a disgrace. The meeting rapidly descended into chaos as the Chairman failed to keep order and appeared to delight in the heckling from the public led by a recently resigned member. The business appeared to pail into insignificance. But it appeared from a public perspective, that the summons was dated incorrectly but it was legal because the chairman “said so”. It was also noted that a number of challenges were made to the Minutes by a member and accepted.
We left the meeting, as did others, early

SUPERFAST BROADBAND
MELTON COUNSTABLE BRISTON HINDOLVESTON
BUT ONLY IF WE ACT!! All rural telephone exchanges in Norfolk stand to benefit from a government backed scheme (BDUK) to allow 90% of the UK population in any local authority area to be
able to access superfast broadband up to 40mbps services by the end of March 2015.
Norfolk county council have stated that although all rural exchanges in Norfolk need this vital upgrade, only areas that show demand will receive the necessary funding to make this possible, this work is due to commence at the start of January 2013, if
we don't register we stand to miss out. Can we really afford let this happen and
miss this opportunity?
To ensure we get our share of this funding we need as many local residents and businesses as possible to register, this is not a commitment of any kind, you will not
be signing up for any services, its just to give a clear signal to Norfolk County Council there is a demand for Superfast Broadband in our local villages which will
allow us all to keep up with the rest of Norfolk and the UK.
The register will be started in the New Year so watch this space. An update with all registration information will follow soon.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Talk Advertising
The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is offering the chance for members of the public to get up close and personal with the fundraisers of this life-saving charity. Talks and presentations are available to anyone who would like to hear how the EAAA operates and how East Anglia has benefitted from operating an air ambulance service. With Norfolk communities being wonderfully supportive towards the cause, the charity believes it is appropriate to
inform the public of what we do. Having recently celebrated ten years of operating HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) missions across East Anglia, the charity is going from strength to strength. In the past five years alone, the capability of this service has grown to include the entire county of Bedfordshire, an increase from one to two operating aircraft serving the region, the ability to include doctors on every flight 365 days of the year, as well as the recent acquisition of more capable helicopters which allows medical

out of frustration and disgust at the continued heckling. But we understand that further altercations took place as the council went into private session when a member tried to leave the premises having declared an interest.
An election took place on 17th November to fill three vacancies. The new members are Helen Simmonds, Barbabra Nutkins and Julie White.
A further election may take place in January to fill the vacancy which has occurred owing to the resignation of David Chambers.

Country Strong (certificate 12A) Saturday 17th December
Loves, lives and ambitions collide in the high stakes world of big time country music.
Shaken by addiction and scandal, country music superstar Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow) takes a romantic shine to Beau Hutton, a talented young guitar player, who works at the rehab clinic where she's on the mend. Their relationship takes a difficult turn when the handsome singer-songwriter, who has been content with playing gigs at small clubs and honky-tonks, suddenly finds himself thrust into Kelly's topsy-turvy world as she gets ready for a

visit is planned for other grounds maintenance suppliers with the objective of finding an alternative, cheaper option to the current provider. Their advice on mole removal will also be sought. A report will be presented at the December meeting.
After the report from the meeting with the Country Club, discussion focused on the support and funding issues that might be faced. It was agreed to reply to the Club’s committee that the proposals made had been considered but that Council were unable to take this further at the present time. Council will be willing to consider options in future should the opportunity arise.
Members discussed the history and reasons for the Briston Road flooding, opposite the Co-Op, that has occurred so frequently. Though Anglian Water have been attempting to address the problem it was felt that the underlying cause has not been sufficiently addressed to adequately resolve the problem long term. It was agreed to write to Anglian Water, copying in NCC Highways Dept., outlining the Council’s grave concerns at Anglian Water’s apparent lack of attention to this flooding problem and requesting a final solution be found.
The allotment policy was discussed and it was agreed not to issue a plot to an existing allotment tenant if there is a waiting list. The policy could be reviewed at any time if the number of plots available exceeded the waiting list. Council will also not countenance any future

MELTON CONSTABLE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
Notes from the meeting held on 8th November 2011
There was one apology for absence from a member and the County Councillor. No members of the public or the police attended this meeting.
The Welcome to Melton Constable leaflet is now available and volunteers have been recruited for each street and will take responsibility to distribute them. The Yesu centre also has copies for distribution.
Discussion arose around the offer by TalkTalk to provide, free of charge, a notice board for Council to use as they wish. The bus shelter area would be considered a good site, subject to planning permission from Highways being granted. One Councillor voiced d issent over the perceived endorsement by a statutory body of a specific company (in this case TalkTalk) that provision of this board might cause and no agreement over whether or not to accept the offer was reached. It was agreed that NALC should be contacted for advice on this issue and the subject postponed to the December meeting.
The recreation ground has a mole problem again. It is recognised that no long term solution to keep moles away can be found. Users of the recreation ground are encouraged to stamp down mole hills when they see them. The mounds present a potential hazard and difficulties in mowing the grass. A site
