From the Principal, Ned Hayes As we enter the month of February we have just begun the second half of the school year. So far Mother Nature has been good to us, but there is no guarantee that the mild winter conditions that we have been experiencing thus far will continue. I want to remind parents that we will be distributing our second quarter report cards to our students on the afternoon of February 7th. Please review their academic status with them after they bring their report cards home. The Valley Central School District is once again holding the Citizens Advisory Budget Committee meetings. These meetings are being held in the Valley Central Middle School cafeteria beginning at 6:45 PM. Meetings will be held on the following dates: February 6th and 21st; March 5th and 19th. These meetings are intended to serve as brainstorming sessions to assist with the creation of the budget for the 2012‐2013 school year. The process will once again be very challenging to school districts across the state. The CABC meetings are open to all district stakeholders. Important dates to remember for the month of February are: • February 22nd– half day for students, as our faculty and staff
continue their work on the district‐wide accountability initiative. • February 17th‐20th– schools will be closed for Presidents’
weekend.
As the school year progresses it continues to be important for students to have good attendance and to make‐up any work that is missed as a result of an illness. We encourage them to hand in all of their assignments on time and to do all that they can to perform up to their capabilities in every one of their classes. We continue to offer post‐session help every Tuesday and Thursday. Students can make arrangements with their teachers to access this help. They should also remember to let their parents know in advance whenever they are staying after school.

Guidance Department
School counselors met with eighth grade students beginning in December to continue the planning process for 9th grade. Graduation r e q u i r em e n t s were discussed as well. Information was provided r e g a r d i n g e l e c t i v e s available to 9th graders for the 2012‐2013 school year. In addition to the core classes, students were asked to select one elective that best suits their needs or interests. In January, the counselors met with 8th grade students individually to determine 9th grade course selections. The course selections are requests and do not guarantee placement in the class. If you have any questions regarding your child’s course requests please contact guidance at 457‐2400, ext. 16601. The LINK Crew at the high school will present the Grade 9 orientation in August. You will be notified of the date and time of the program. January 30th through February 2nd is “No Name Calling Week”. The counselors will be meeting with sixth grade students for an anti‐bullying presentation. Please discuss this very important topic at home.

Congratulations to Anna Derevensky, a seventh grader, who was selected to represent VCMS at this year’s OCMEA All‐County Jazz Festival in March 2012. Way to go, Anna! Vocal and Instrumental students have begun working on their NYSSMA solos. Students must be sure to practice at home to make this the best possible experience! Any eighth grader who is not currently enrolled in chorus, but would like to sing in chorus in the high school should see Mr. Gonzales or Mrs. Magee ASAP in order to schedule a time to meet with Mrs. Carver, the high school chorus teacher. The high school has 3 different choral groups: Mixed Chorus, Women’s Chorale, and Chamber Choir.

Art Mrs. Foti
Seventh grade art is completing a surrealistic room design with a Dali influence. Look in the cases downstairs for their beautiful Greek vases with a personal image carved into the vase. They will begin working in groups on a piñata project this month, I will let them choose their own theme. A new class of 6th graders arrived on January 30th for the 3rd quarter. I’ve had a great group the last 2 quarters! The new students will begin their sketchbooks that we will use until the end of June. Their next project will be a painting project using primary and secondary colors. After that, we will begin a clay project of Japanese kimonos. So keep an eye out for them in the hallways, cases, office, and guidance for all the great art work that students have done in my class!
