Dear Editor,
I read your article The Antioxidant Myth with deep interest. Why
is it that so many people are taking so many types of health
supplements to enhance their health? Since the efficacy of these
supplements is being debated, I think we should switch to fruits,
vegetables and other natural sources of food for our general health. What is more, there could be risks in taking those supplements.
Concerned Consumer
For reasons that arent entirely clear, the current H7N9 flu,
unlike common flu, strikes deep within patients' lungs, making
itharder to spread to someone else and unusually lethal.

Air pollution has always accompanied civilizations. Pollution
started from the prehistoric times when man created the first
fires. According to a 1983 article in the Journal of Science,
"soot found on ceilings of prehistoric caves provides ample

inadequate ventilation of open fires".

A huge red sun rises in the morning mists of Cambodias Cardamom
Mountains. Jim Sanderson sets out to catch a clouded leopard, a mysterious catthat roams the ground and lower jungle canopy. Few people have ever seen this
beautiful cat. Sandersons mission is twofold: to capture the creature on film and
keep it alive.
Armed with cameras, radios, syringes and a sample case of designerfragrances (cats seem to love them the ocelot is obsessed by Obsession for
Men), Sanderson has documented eight rare and endangered species of smallcats since 1997. Six months or more every year, hes deep in the wilds, bravingraging rivers, poisonous snakes, leeches, malaria and dengue fever. His favouritedestination would be Kenya, Bolivia or any other exotic locale.
Why is he risking his health, spending time away from friends and family, and even some of his own money, to search out these catsexotic animals thatare too dangerous to be pets and too undersized to compete with the betterknown majestic big cats? Sanderson is a true cat lover, and after each stay in thefield, he returns to Washington with blood samples for genetic testing. He givesthe blood samples to Stephen OBrien at the National Institutes of Health to
determine DNA characteristics that may help us better understand diseaseresistance in pet catsperhaps in human as well.
Sanderson estimates only $75,000 a year is spent worldwide on smallwild cat research. Lions, tigers and other large cats get the limelight, and thecorporate funding. Sanderson who always believes in teamwork, managed tofilm another of the rarest species, the Andean mountain cat seen only threetimes by humans.
The 55-year-old Sanderson found his calling late in life. Originally heearned a PhD in Mathematics. After a decade of working on numerical analysis,
he took a 1985 vacation to Rwanda to see the mountain gorillas. That tripinspired him to make a difference in the natural world. So he began aconcentrated study of landscape ecology. Then fascinated by territorial chartsfilled with question marks about wild species, he set out his committed team to
photo-trap picturesque pampas cats, shy oncillas, camouflaged margays, wilyAfrican wildcats, skittish sand cats, and a half-dozen other tiny cat speciesunknown even to most naturalists around the world.
Now as a staff at Conservation Internationals Centre for AppliedBiodiversity Science in Washington, Sanderson also surveys catlike populationsin the field and tracks their movement with radio collars. In 1998 he was first toradio-track the Chilean guigna, the smallest cat in the Western Hemisphere.Farmers routinely killed the cats for poaching chickens, and believed them to be

vampires. Sanderson dispelled the vampire myth and devised a simple solutionto save the cats: chicken wire! He gave it to poor farmers so they could buildfences around their coops.
It takes more than field study to assure that these cats will survive, however. Sanderson is setting up programmes with local students to continue
photo-trapping in their countries. So far, he has started such projects inCambodia, Guyana, Suriname and Brazil. Good scientific information willmake conservation planning possible, he explains.
Just what keeps him going, spending long stretches of time away from hiswife, an understanding biologist who studies predatory birds in Connecticut? JimSanderson says his motivation is simple: I will not permit the extinction of anyspecies of cats on my watch. Small cats need help.

Are you still playing your flute? When there is hardly time for our loveI am feeling guiltyTo be longing for your song
The melody concealed in the slim hollow of the bambooUncovered by the breath of an artistComposed by his fingers
Blown by the windTo the depth of my heart
Are you still playing your flute? In the village so quiet and desertedAmidst the sick rice field
While here it has become a luxuryTo spend time watching the rain
Gazing at the evening rays
Collecting dew dropsOr enjoying the fragrance of flowers.
Are you still playing your flute? The more it disturbs my conscience
to be thinking of youin the hazard of you
my younger brothers unemployed and desperatemy people disunited by politicsmy friend slaughtered mercilessly
