P. 50/51 3D Video Doctrine 2008
‘Double Feature – Play the People’ NBF project. Guangzhou, China.
In samenwerking met Stan Wannet.
Tijdens het project ‘Double Feature - Play the People’ werkte
Doctrine’ in Chinese tekens.

P. 50/51 3D Video Doctrine 2008
‘Double Feature – Play the People’, NBF project, Guangzhou, China.
Collaboration with Stan Wannet.
For the ‘Double Feature – Play the People’ project, I worked together
with Stan Wannet to build a 3D video game. The former Communist
Party building where the exhibition was held had a large hall with a
big podium at one end of the room. At the other was a mezzanine
that looked out toward the podium. Tom Beterams built a bunker up
there, from which people could use Wannet’s wooden game console
to control my sculptures at the far end of the hall and play a Space
Invaders-inspired game. Wannet’s 3D ‘video monitor’ would show
the score and flash the text ‘3D Video Doctrine’ in Chinese characters.

‘de Kunstopdracht’ (The Art Commission), NBKS and City of Oss,
Oss.
This work resulted from a workshop/competition called ‘De
Kunstopdracht,’ relating to an art commission. The theme of the
commission for 2008/2009 was the industrial inheritance of an old
industrial park, the Bergossterrein, now known as the Berghkwartier,
in the City of Oss. The region was being redeveloped with express
references to its industrial past. My work was a response to the
condition of the area at that moment – as a huge construction
site, that is. The GHP is a pumping station that pumps history out
of the ground instead of water, in order to transform it into new
constructions in the form of organically growing steel towers.
At night, the lights mounted on the work would pulse to visually
accentuate the pump’s action.

P. 54/55 Bruggenhoofd Chabot 2009
‘Wereld van Witte de With’. Chabot Museum, Rotterdam. In

P. 54/55 Bruggenhoofd Chabot (Chabot Bridgehead) 2009
‘Wereld van Witte de With’ (Witte de With World), Chabot Museum,
Rotterdam. Collaboration with De Snodevormgevers.
Bruggenhoofd was a commission from the Chabot Museum in
Rotterdam, made especially for the Wereld van Witte de With festival.
The festival theme for 2009 was: There are borders! Working
together with the designer duo de Snodevormgevers, We produced
a functional bridge between the public space and the museum
garden. This bridge was meant to invite festivalgoers to enter the
museum and also served, in part, as an entrance to the show in the
museum. The design of the work had very deliberate references to
space travel and its positioning over the hedge evoked thoughts of
an invasion. ‘Bridgehead’ is a military term that indicates a ‘forward
position seized by advancing troops in enemy territory as a foothold
for further advance.’

P. 59 Woestijn model 2009
Verdediging, Camouflage’.

P. 59 Woestijn model (Desert Model) 2009
The series of models I made in 2009 were sketches for full-scale
works that might someday eventually be built. These models
were later presented as a collection under the heading ‘Behoud,
Verdediging, Camouflage’ (Preserve, Defend, Camouflage).

Paul Segers (Eindhoven, 1976) graduated from the Academy of
Art and Design in Den Bosch in 2000. Since then, he has been
steadily building his oeuvre, much of it consisting of sculptures and
installations presented in the public space. He considers himself
a sculptor, though he dabbles in other media, such as video and
performance. He also organizes projects in the Netherlands and
around the world under the auspices of his ‘New Brabant Front,’
a network of like-minded artists from various fields in the creative
industry.
Station to Station presents a selection of sculptures and
installations from the period 2000-2010, in which Segers explores,
in ever-greater depth, the tension between reality and fiction, art
spaces and the public space, and image and imagination. He
creates machines, vehicles, dioramas, visual tableaus and live-
action situations through which he responds with an entirely
personal imagery to the world as he sees it – from work to work,
station to station.
