Macedon state MP Mary-Anne omas has hit out at Macedon Ranges council’s plea for help with explosive growth in Gisborne, saying she’s disappointed it has been unable to come up with a positive plan for the town.
‘‘I must say I struggle to hear denitively the vision that Macedon Ranges council has for its towns and communities,’’ she said. ‘‘e fact is, shires won’t get what they don’t ask for.’’
As reported by Star Weekly, Cr Star Weekly, Cr Star WeeklyRussell Mowatt last week suggested that Gisborne’s expansion be halted until the state government does more to address infrastructure problems.
But Ms omas said the council couldn’t receive funding for things it hadn’t applied for.
‘‘e shire has three projects on its books [through Regional Development Australia] … that’s not a vision,’’ she said.
‘‘e council has been unable to come up with a vision for Gisborne and articulate it in a way that will attract funding.’’
Veteran Brad Teal Real Estate agent John Dunlop also criticised calls for a moratorium on growth.
‘‘e shire charges developers so it’s probably a case of whether it needs to li its own game,’’ he said.
Mr Dunlop said that while Gisborne was growing rapidly, most services were keeping pace with demand.
‘‘We are very fortunate because it’s still the best of both worlds,’’ he said.
‘‘Parking, particularly in Gisborne’s CBD, is something that needs to be addressed pretty quickly … but I think, generally, Gisborne is pretty well serviced.’’
As reported by Star Weekly, Cr Star Weekly, Cr Star WeeklyMowatt said Gisborne was turning into ‘‘another Sunbury’’, with a lack of adequate infrastructure and services.
A settlement strategy adopted by the council in July 2011 estimated a Gisborne population of 14,700 by 2036. But the most recent council meeting heard that the town’s population had already passed 13,000.
Urging Planning Minister Richard Wynne to meet with the full council, councillors Mowatt and John Letchford questioned whether the government was doing enough to help the council cope with the growth.
e council voted unanimously to back a motion calling for a study into the merits of a major bypass of the Mount Macedon half-diamond interchange to Gisborne-Bacchus Marsh Road, and a half-diamond interchange from the Calder Freeway to Willowbank Road. Expanded bus services will also be sought.
Council chief executive Peter Johnston said the vision for Gisborne’s growth was clearly set out in the planning scheme.
‘‘is plan was developed over many years with substantial community consultation and ultimately approved by the state Planning Minister,’’ he said.
‘‘Development plans are in place for Gisborne and New Gisborne to ensure future development is managed in an orderly, co-ordinated and sustainable way.’’

Ten-gallon hats, cowboy boots and masses of double denim will make Sunbury Memorial Hall look more like the heart of Texas this Saturday. More than 150 people are expected to pack the hall for Sunbury Rotary Club’s annual country and western charity night. With prizes on offer, music lovers are being encouraged to dress up and raise money for local programs such as the club’s weekly community kitchen and donations to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Spokesman Mannie Camilleri says the event raised more than $4000 last year. ‘‘It’s the kind of night where everyone has a smile on their face,’’ he says. ‘‘People can learn a bit of bootscooting, and have a dance and a really good time.’’ Entertainment will include the Tim Farran Band. There’ll also be fundraising rafes, silent and live auctions. Tickets: $15 (includes tea and coffee. BYO supper). Details: 0421 490 134

rewards for our community, as council saves $5.5 million in net interest across 10 years.
‘‘is is the Hume story for 2016-17 – huge investments in services and community facilities, combined with a low rates increase, a budget in surplus and virtually no debt.’’
Cr Patsikatheodorou said the average household would pay about $45 extra in rates this year. But as this is a revaluation year, the degree of change will vary.
‘‘Council has been very prudent … we’ve implemented a number of savings measures that help us to deliver services and infrastructure in an ecient manner,’’ she said.

Construction of a heated pool at the aquatic centre, planning for a global learning centre in Macedon Street and new lawn tennis club rooms are among the big-ticket items for Sunbury in Hume council’s dra 2016-17 budget.
e $218.88 million budget, which proposes an average rates increase of 2.5 per cent, was expected to be released to the public during a meeting at Sunbury Civic Centre on Monday night.
A total of $74.10 million has been slated for new infrastructure across the municipality,
including more carparking at Boardman Reserve and additional improvements to Sunbury’s town centre.
Money to widen sections of Wildwood Road in Wildwood and an upgrade of Bourke Street, Bulla, are part of a $10.24 million allocation for roads projects.
Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said it was the most ambitious capital works program launched during her eight years on the council.
“We want to deliver facilities and services as [the community] needs it, not 50 years down the track,’’ she said. ‘‘Our decision to pay back almost $26 million of debt early will reap huge
Chief executive Domenic Isola said increases to state government growth and infrastructure spending in Hume had made meeting the new rate rise cap much easier.
“When we are getting funding to assist the council, that helps alleviate the rate burden on the community,’’ he said. “[e rate rise cap] makes us think more about what we are providing and how we provide it.
‘‘I’m not a proponent of [the rates cap]. [But] I think this council would have got to that rate anyway.”

Hume invests in ‘ambitious’ work
Road closures will be in place for eight to 12 weeks as Hume council upgrades a bluestone bridge between Bulla and Wildwood.
Ageing timber will be replaced with a ve-metre-wide concrete deck as part of a $725,000 project to improve the historic bridge over Deep Creek on Wildwood Road South.
e bridge, increasingly used by motorists heading south from Romsey and Lanceeld and by trac detoured by crashes on Sunbury Road, will remain a single-lane structure aer the work’s completion with the council keen to retain its ‘‘quaint appearance’’.
Steel guard rails will be added, while historically signicant iron girders will be retained.
Approaches on both sides of the bridge will be widened with 425 metres of pavement upgraded as part of works, which start this month.
Wildwood CFA captain Joel Xuereb said that while residents would have welcomed a wider bridge, improvements to its approaches would make a big dierence.
‘‘In a perfect world, we’d have loved a new double-lane bridge, perhaps built next to the old structure,’’ he said. “But under the circumstances, it isn’t too bad.’’
Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said VicRoads had been involved in plans designed to maintain the bridge’s appearance.
‘‘Drivers are encouraged to cross Deep Creek at either Bulla Road or Kongaderra Road and allow extra time for their commute,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

Writer’s debut novel wins the VogelA Woodend author who’s won Australia’s premier literary prize for young writers says she’s had a dream run, having only recently started writing ction.
Katherine Brabon spent many days surrounded by the gentle hum of activity at e Village Larder in Woodend and Mount Macedon’s Trading Post, working away at her debut novel, e Memory Artist.
e ctional memoir, which looks back at the upbringing of the son of Russian dissidents, led to Brabon winning this year’s Vogel literary award, including $20,000 and a publishing deal with Allen and Unwin.
Brabon, who is completing a PhD in creative writing at Monash University, says she’s always been an avid reader. But it wasn’t until she decided to turn a love for Russian history into a short story and then a manuscript that she launched herself into the world of ction.
‘‘My parents read to me a lot and I loved to read as a kid, but I only really started writing ction the past three years,’’ Brabon says.
‘‘I just started writing and the award came up. I thought it would be great to be long-listed and get some exposure, but to win … it’s all happened far quicker than I thought it would.’’
Brabon, who was educated at Woodend Primary School, Sacred Heart and Sunbury College, recently moved to Melbourne but returns home at least every weekend.
She says she was studying for her masters in history at Oxford when she decided to start writing.
‘‘I was studying a lot of Russian history. I was fascinated by it and felt a desire to do something more. I started writing a short story rst and it was published over there, so I thought, I’m going to have a go at this.’’
Returning to Australia, Brabon began her PhD, which allowed her the time to hone her story. She says the cafes were the perfect setting to allow her creativity to ow. ‘‘ey’re never too busy on a weekday morning and I like to have a bit of noise around me when I write.’’

Complaints about parking and trac problems plaguing Mount Macedon have prompted authorities to tighten enforcement of restrictions as carloads of tourists ock to open gardens this autumn.
Macedon Ranges council has met police and VicRoads to discuss short and long-term measures to cater for increased trac that has also led to concerns about rubbish-dumping, over-use of toilets and pedestrian behaviour.
Resident Jamie Byron said the number of tourists had spiked in the wake of a wave of media stories spruiking the area’s spectacular autumn trees and many open gardens.
Hotspots include Honour Avenue and Mount Macedon Road.
‘‘It’s been an issue for a long time, but the past few years it’s been an absolute disaster,’’ Mr Byron said.
He said the council had put up new no-standing signs that had helped, but trac remained a major problem.
Mr Byron said that while residents fully supported private gardens being opened to visitors, they wanted the council to ensure suitable parking and amenities were provided.
He said a possible solution would be to have visitors park at Tony Clarke Reserve before boarding a tour bus to the gardens.
Council chief executive Peter Johnston said ocers would continue to patrol the Mount in the next few weekends, issuing nes “particularly where private driveways are being obstructed and parking is occurring in no- parking zones”.
‘‘Council will liaise with relevant businesses to ensure appropriate measures are being taken for parking and toilets on site, as well as alternative transport options,’’ he said.

Organisers hope that people will replace the hum and glow of electronic devices with the hu and pu of steam engines, if only for a day, at the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society’s annual rally this Sunday.
President Tim Reid says the return of the club’s lovingly restored steam locomotive, Perry, will be a highlight of the family day, which also features a tractor pull, animal farm, mini-train and, weather permitting, camel rides.
Car, truck and machinery displays will also take people back to simpler times.
‘‘ese are the days, when you started work you couldn’t just turn a key,’’ Mr Reid says. ‘‘Instead, you lit and stoked a re for hours before the engine came to life.’’
e rally is at Steam Park in Webb Crescent, New Gisborne, from 9.30am-3pm. Tickets: $10 adults, children free.

Nine students from Kyneton’s Sacred Heart College say an exchange trip to France that included a visit to the Somme has changed the way they look at life.
Zach Craig, 15, was part of the group that spent almost three weeks last month taking classes at Lycée Notre-Dame du Roc and touring historic sites such as Pozières, where 6700 Australians died during World War I.
He said a cold, wet day spent looking at the thousands of grave stones, laid out in long lines at Villers-Bretonneux, was incredibly sobering.
‘‘We were all rugged up and didn’t have anyone shooting at us … it was hard enough as it was,’’ Zach said. ‘‘You’re used to hearing and learning about history, but this gave us a whole new appreciation.’’
Students were particularly taken by a banner in a school playground declaring: ‘‘We will always remember Australia’’.
‘‘It really opened our eyes to how important the eorts of our soldiers had been,’’ Zach said.

Beer bottles and sharp shing hooks have been found on the banks of Sunbury’s Spavin Lake in recent weeks, prompting Hume council to urge anglers to clean up aer themselves.
Discarded nets and tangled lines, posing a threat to the area’s bird life, have also been found.
Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou is encouraging lake users to do the right thing and carry bags to collect their rubbish.
‘‘While Spavin Lake has become a popular shing spot in Sunbury, it is also home to a wide variety of rare birds,’’ she said.
‘‘ese beautiful creatures can become trapped in shing line or be badly injured by a sh hook.’’
e council has also investigated at least one incident involving the illegal dumping of hard waste at the picturesque reserve, o Spavin Drive.
‘‘Anyone who thinks that they can use the cover of darkness to abandon waste in our public areas should think again,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

Opposition MPs and a Gisborne-based health service have slammed cuts to aged-care funding in this year’s federal budget.
Aged-care providers will lose more than $1 billion in funding across Australia for complex healthcare over four years under the federal budget handed down last Tuesday.
at news comes weeks aer experts warned of a looming “tsunami” of aged-care demand in the Macedon Ranges, with projections showing people in the McEwen electorate will have the state’s second-highest incidence of dementia by 2050.
While welcoming increased spending for public hospitals ahead of a looming election, Macedon Ranges health chief executive Don Tidbury said reduced aged-care funding was a ‘‘real concern’’.
‘‘I fear it’s going to impact on our ability to deliver services,’’ he said. ‘‘e number of people aged over 80 living in this area will nearly triple over the next 10 years.
‘‘I would hope that whichever party is in government, they would take charge of aged-care funding.’’
Mr Tidbury also feared an ongoing freeze of the indexation of Medicare payments to doctors would have an aect on the area’s high bulk-billing rates.
‘‘It may well lead to doctors having to increase the level of co-payment required from patients,’’ he said.
Mr Tidbury’s concerns were echoed by McEwen Labor MP Rob Mitchell and his
Bendigo counterpart, Lisa Chesters, who decried the budget as catering for the ‘‘big end’’ of town.
‘‘Almost 85 per cent of Bendigo workers will miss out on an income tax cut because they earn less than $80,000 per year,’’ Ms Chesters said. ‘‘Meanwhile, people who earn more than $300,000 a year will receive at least a $2600 tax cut. It’s unfair to give tax cuts to those at the top rather than every worker.’’
Both Ms Chesters and Mr Mitchell bemoaned the fact that a fraction of education funding slashed in 2014 and 2015 had been restored, meaning schools such as Sunbury College will miss out on at least $1 million promised under the Gonski reforms.
Bendigo Liberal candidate Megan Purcell said the government’s No.1 priority was to create jobs.
‘‘We face a highly competitive, volatile and uncertain global economy, but the Turnbull government has an economic plan which is working,’’ she said.
Ms Purcell welcomed tax concessions for at least 15,500 businesses in the electorate.
Also funded was $13.3 million to help councils maintain and upgrade local roads and $500,000 for the new Kyneton Community Park.

Community groups are being urged to apply for a free 5kW solar system as organisers of a not-for-prot bulk-buy scheme celebrate a major milestone.
e $7400 system, donated by the Hub Foundation Castlemaine and supplier SunEdison, includes an inverter and 20 panels.
Hub Foundation project ocer Jo Kaptein said the donation would mark the successful installation of more than 100 systems in the Macedon Ranges as a result of MASH2, the second round of the hub’s solar bulk-buy program.
Riddells Creek Christmas Tree Farm owner and Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett is among those who signed up for the program.
Cr Hackett, who recently had a 5kW system installed, said he hoped to generate enough power to meet all the farm’s electricity needs once the price of storage batteries went down.
‘‘We had the system checked the other day and it’s already produced about 550 kilowatts of power in ve weeks,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m hopeful that our power costs are going to go down markedly.’’
Cr Hackett said the new system was powering his farmhouse, ve fridges, pumps, sheds and power tools. He said it was far superior to a 2kW system that cost him close to $20,000 about eight years ago.
e purchase process was also a breeze, with MASH2 eliminating the need to deal with separate consultants, retailers and wholesalers.
Community group applications close on May 30.
e next round of the bulk-buy scheme is expected to start mid-year.

Organisers of a free program helping Sunbury residents conquer isolation caused by a loved one’s drug or alcohol addiction hope it will lead to the creation of a monthly support group.
Following the success of the rst Action for Recovery course in September last year, Sunbury Community Health (SCH) will again foot the bill so a group of about 15 people can be part of the next six-week program, starting May 23.
SCH drug and alcohol team leader Jim Carlton said the course, delivered by the

e rst program was organised aer more than 70 people attended a community forum in Sunbury that focused on problems caused by the rising use of crystal methamphetamine (ice).
Self Help Addiction Resource Centre, gave people information to help better understand addiction.
e course covers topics such as boundaries, guilt, worry, communication and acceptance. Participants are given workbooks that include strategies to help their families.
‘‘Perhaps the most important thing is that it helps break the stigma,’’ Mr Carlton said.
‘‘It can be really tough for people who have a family member who’s addicted.
‘‘Not only do they put so much into caring for their loved one but there’s oen the shame of having other people know and, sometimes,
Mr Carlton said feedback about the program had been overwhelmingly positive, with people expressing a sense of relief upon discovering they were not alone.
Counsellors are also considering the establishment of a peer-based support group to give parents, siblings and other relatives a regular opportunity to discuss their issues.
‘‘For many, the chance to meet with people who know exactly what they are going through will be life changing,’’ Mr Carlton said.
Action for Recovery will be held from 6pm every Monday from May 23-June 27. Details: 1300 660 068 or [email protected]

is year’s Education Week theme, “Technology. Create your future”, focuses on the importance of children engaging with technology throughout their education.
Showing the community how the Department of Education and Training aims to make Victoria the Education State, hundreds of schools will have open days and exhibitions.
Technology has assumed a hugely important place in schools, with teachers and students from prep to year 12 being exposed to what is essentially a constantly evolving revolution.
A current conversation/activism topic of politicians, school communities, students, parents and educators is computer coding, which certainly taps into Education Week’s “create your future” mandate.
In an article published last year on e Conversation, Steve Goschnick, adjunct professor at Swinburne Institute of Technology, professor at Swinburne Institute of Technology, made his thoughts clear that coding is not all

“Introducing young minds to the process of instructing a computer allows them to go from ‘I swiped this’ to ‘I made this’,” Goschnick wrote.

“Teaching kids to code is about opening their mind to a means to an end, not necessarily the end in itself.”

Sacred Heart College
Sacred Heart College, Kyneton, has adopted a contemporary approach to enhance productive relationships between the school, student, parents and community.
As the college celebrates 127 years of Mercy Education in Kyneton, principal Craig Holmes says it continues to provide an education steeped in the rich tradition of the Mercy values of love, respect, justice, hope and service.
“We challenge our students to be life- long learners who are resilient, creative, compassionate and actively informed citizens of the 21st century,” Mr Holmes says.
At Sacred Heart College, students participate in a rich curriculum from years 7-12, preparing them academically, socially and spiritually for life beyond secondary school. e options of VCE, VET and VCAL allow students to select the pathway that is right for them. Contemporary educational programs, innovative learning facilities, and
diverse co-curricular activities stimulate and challenge students, inspiring critical thinking and decision-making in a collaborative environment.
e development of a number of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) projects that are happening at dierent year levels is an example of this. e projects allow students to develop their skills and knowledge in inter-connected ways.
Each student is encouraged to discover what their faith means to them, and the ways in which it echoes their everyday lives.
“Our aim is to motivate and inspire new generations of young people with the courage to embrace challenges and live a vibrant life,” Mr Holmes says.

Last year, some kids in Africa were wearing Red Rock Christian College uniforms with new school bags slung over shoulders. Not because the college had opened an overseas campus and not only because a school community saw a need and met it.
Principal Karen McCoy explains: “We’re a school that aims to encourage, challenge and inspire each student to understand our world and that we’re all ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’. As a Christian school, we seek to develop principled, thoughtful and analytical young people who are prepared to inuence their world with integrity. And we work closely with parents and guardians to achieve this.”
Building positive identity in students is also a focus. “Doing something as simple as giving needier kids a uniform helps our students understand the importance of arming relationships with others in the wider world and to feel positive about themselves.”
Red Rock actively prepares students to inuence their world from the day they enrol.
“We provide them with a safe, nurturing environment that teaches them to explore, ask questions and think deeply, to respect others, to be just and compassionate.”
e curriculum goals are formed from the Australian Curriculum; the learning framework is based on Understanding by Design. “is means teachers think carefully about the intended learning and plan from that intention,” the principal says. “Our learning program promotes a ‘growth mindset’ and extends those who are ready. at’s achieved through a variety of teaching strategies, dierentiation within tasks and dynamic student groupings.”
Music is integral, and the college has a band and choir with assembly performances and an annual Night of Music performance.
Japanese language, art and sport are also important contributors to student excellence and wellbeing.

Salesian College Sunbury is the oldest Salesian educational foundation in Australia. Established by the Salesian Society in 1927, it is situated on the historic grounds of Rupertswood Mansion, built in 1874 by Sir William Clarke. This one will win the heart of someone who values the classic charms of a few decades back – where clerestory windows sit under double-height ceilings that elsewhere duck and soar; timber lines practically every surface; slate and cork cover oors; and exposed bricks are features. The well-maintained house on about 2000 square metres and within a stroll of the village and primary school and a ve-minute drive to the train station, has a study and three bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The all-white main bathroom has chic subway tiling and a timber vanity unit. A lounge-dining room has an inset wood heater and links with the meals area and kitchen. The all-timber kitchen has stainless-steel appliances. A verandah at the back, along with a brick-paved area open to the sun, are spots from where to watch the wildlife and listen to the birds.

This is a place that succeeds in merging simple elegance with a homely feel – nothing ashy but everything smartly turned-out. The soothing grey palette works perfectly alongside timber blinds and timber-framed french doors, and light ttings salute art nouveau and deco. Light-lled living spaces are generous and cleverly positioned for either easy interaction or retreat. They include a lounge-dining room with polished oorboards and gas re, carpeted rumpus/theatre room and tiled family-meals area. Four bedrooms include the large main with retreat space, walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Entertainment under a vine-covered pergola, with wood-red pizza oven steps away, will prove relaxing, as pathways invite exploration of pretty gardens and shady trees on a 1600-square metre block. Gas ducted heating and double garage with internal access get the nal ticks.

On about 2.42 hectares, yet just minutes from Kyneton’s buzzing shopping precinct, this spacious house – with verandahs front and back to take in the views – will tempt families looking for a small-acreage lifestyle. Three well-fenced paddocks, a dam to water gardens, a 12 x 8-metre concreted Colorbond shed with power, vegie patch and fruit trees will kick-start a tree-change lifestyle dream. The house has three separate living areas – carpeted lounge room with bay window, carpeted family room with wood heater, and a dining zone with bay window. The kitchen has a walk-in pantry and dishwasher. The main bedroom, up one end, has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Three more at the opposite end have wardrobes and share a good-sized bathroom and separate toilet. The backyard is fenced off from the rest of the land and there’s sealed road frontage.

Designed by local architect Damien Summers, this chic abode on about 1.62 hectares is beautifully appointed and has a six-star green rating. A combination of polished concrete oors, mountain ash interior doors, ceilings, bespoke shelving and bedroom oors add to the beauty of this place, which also has the advantage of an east-west orientation. Clerestory windows below soaring ceilings provide abundant light. The schmick kitchen has a large walk-in pantry, glossy white cabinetry, stone benches and all the mod-cons. Of the three bedrooms, the main has an island wall concealing a tted dressing room, and an en suite with a walk-in shower. The main bathroom is similarly sleek and has a freestanding tub. Adding to the appeal are a vine-covered pergola, heated slab, double-glazing and a shed with three-phase power.

This Gisborne house offers a sophisticated décor and oor plan. The elegance of wallpaper, quiet palette, top-notch window dressings, french doors, bespoke cabinetry and messmate oorboards is beautifully understated, allowing the comforts to shine through. And the layout allows three separate living zones while not sacricing room for other goodies, such as multiple bathrooms, lavish storage and well-designed mud room.
The rst living room is a library accessed through double doors from the entrance
hall. It’s an intimate space able to satisfy many retreat needs. A big rumpus room has easy access from the three secondary bedrooms, each of which has a walk-in wardrobe; two share an en suite and the other is across the way from the main bathroom and powder room. Also in this wing is the laundry/mudroom arrangement.
Next door to a large study, the whopping main bedroom has twin walk-in wardrobes and a large en suite with tub and dual basins. It also has french doors to a deck which wraps around to meet a covered deck
outside the family room. The tri-zone living hub incorporates a rened dining space; a stylish family sitting area with inset wood heater under a mantelpiece and a casual meals area with a corner window admitting easterly light.
The kitchen is big, bright and beautiful. The walk-in pantry is roomy, benches – including an island – are Caesarstone, cabinetry is in a contemporary-country style and the splashback is in white-painted bricks.
Gardens out back are pristine,

The block of about 1700 square metres easily accommodates a 6.6 x 6.6-metre shed/workshop with roller door.

Three schools are less than 1.5 kilometres away.

“JUST A LITTLE WORD”“Ethical” is just a little word but has such a big impact.I looked up the dictionary for the exact meaning:“Ethical” - “1) pertaining to or dealing with morals orprinciples of morality; pertaining to right and wrongin conduct. 2) being in accordance with the rules orstandards for right conduct or practice, especiallythe standards of a profession.” If we look at theprofessions which are considered most ethical &trustworthy, Nurses, Doctors and Teachers are at thetop of the list. Those considered least are Politicians,Solicitors and yes, Real Estate Agents! How very sadit is that those who run the country, who look afterour legal matters and those who deal with our mostvaluable asset (our home) are held in such low esteemand this state of affairsaffairsaf relates to that word “Ethical”.Personally, I have given up on Politicians, howeverReal Estate Agents do have a Code of Conduct andshould at all times adhere to it. Choosing an Agent isdifficult but here are a few things for you to consider.consider.considerAsk prospective Agents for their interpretation ofEthical and how, in their view, it relates to Real Estate.Ask about the “Code of Conduct” - do they know thatit exists? Three important points listed in the Codeof Conduct are: 1. An Agent will always work in thebest interest of the Vendor/Landlord 2. An Agent willat no time belittle or speak of another Agent 3. AnAgent will at no time approach a Vendor who is on themarket with another Agent, via letter-boxing,letter-boxing,letter sendingletters directly or by direct approach. Note:- Thereare times when a property has no “For Sale” Boardand therefore advertising material may be put in theletterbox. If in doubt, Consumer AffairsAffairsAf Victoria arevery helpful. “Ethical” - just a little word, but so veryimportant.

Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the denitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs –www.considerthesauce.net
A Vietnamese eatery for Yarraville? A dose of cynicism is warranted, I reckon.
For starters, Asian food in Yarraville is a very mixed bag – some good, some lacklustre, some already forgotten.
What chance of a really fabulous bowl of pho in downtown Yarraville, away from Footscray, Sunshine or St Albans – where numbers and competition ensure very high standards?
In the case of Friend or Pho, the pun in the name is even based on a mispronunciation.
But a good sign is the gorgeous, larger-than- life, hand-written menu on the joint’s Facebook page – it’s all in Vietnamese.
But even then, banh mi is listed at $9. Whoa! at’s twice the going rate in Footscray.
Happily, things take a delightful turn, dispelling our scepticism as soon as we enter and broach the price of that banh mi.
e answers we get run like this …“It’s just really good! We make our own
pickles, and it’s got our own pork crackling!”Even better, we soon learn that the sisters
behind Friend or Pho – Anna Nguten (out front) and Chelsea Le (in the kitchen) – are lifelong, born-and-bred Yarravillians.
About 15 years ago their parents ran a bakery on Anderson Street (corner of Buninyong Street, where the fancy cake-makers now live).
Friend or Pho is done out in very cool cafe style. ere’s seating inside, in the hallway and outside on the verandah.
e menu proper runs through a tight line-up of mostly familiar dishes.
FRIEND OR PHOAddress: 3 Ballarat Street, YarravillePhone: 9042 4431
Kenny Weir joins the fever, desperately seeking the perfect pho
CONSIDER THE
So how do we go on our rst visit? Oh, my – it’s dicult to contain my enthusiasm. is is simply great Vietnamese food, as good as any in the west and way better than most.
e waiting times are appropriate for such great food and prices – banh mi aside – are in the regular ball park.
Beef pho ($12) is wonderful – and about medium size when compared to Footscray places that do the small-medium-large routine.
e broth is terric and a bit salty (just as I like it). And there’s a lot of beef in that bowl – sliced but cooked through, and brisket.
Com tam (pork chop with broken rice, $13) is similarly excellent. All the porky bits display in-house care and handiwork.
e meat loaf is peppery perfection and the pork chop the most tender and beautifully cooked we have had with this dish.
Go ran, of six fried chicken ribs, costs $9 and can be padded out with rice for $4 to make a more complete meal.
As with everything else we try at Friend or Pho, the ribs are state-of-the-art: crisp, hot and delicious. For $13, a few slices of cucumber or segments of tomato would bring this dish more into line with its fellow menu items in terms of portion size and value.
Vegetarian pho ($12) is unlike any dish you’ll get at Footscray’s sole dedicated Vietnamese
VEGETARIAN PHO
COM THAM
vegetarian eatery, or at the Vietnamese temple in Braybrook – there’s little by way of starch here and no mock meat.
Instead, the he and texture is delivered by tofu and a super range of mushrooms – delightfully meaty in their own way.
e broth is so avoursome that I feel obliged to make sure it’s not made with chicken bones or some such.
Nope. It’s made with the usual vegetables and shitake mushrooms.
Again, it’s simply wonderful! I reckon this will become known as one of Melbourne’s great vegetarian dishes.
Another prediction: Friend or Pho is destined to be a hit.
36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 10, 2016
SPORT
By Tara Murray
Aer two tough losses in a week, Rupertswood returned to the winners’ list by beating Riddell in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday.
Trailing at three-quarter time and kicking with the wind in the nal term, the Sharks found themselves in a similar position to their one-point loss to Sunbury Kangaroos the previous weekend.
But this time they clinched victory by kicking six goals to none at the crunch, getting home 10.15 (75)-7.8 (50).
Sharks’ coach, Kevin Fitzgerald, said his side had learned from the Sunbury Kangaroos defeat.
“I’m really pleased, and we worked hard all day,” he said.
“We had 10 more scoring shots than them, but bad kicking is bad football. We should have been in front earlier than we were.
“Last week I thought we were starting to run out of legs. is week we were running a bit harder.”
Ruckman Jordan Braddy was best on ground, while Steve Burlak and Todd Podolczak kicked four goals each.
“Burlak was terric for us when it counted and he was a great target for us all day,” Fitzgerald said.
“He’s played forward before. He’s a hard match-up and I think we need him to play forward at this stage.
“We’ve asked for a lot from Todd and today he started to give it to us.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the Sharks, who meet unbeaten Diggers Rest this weekend.
“We want to play the good sides because it gives us a fair idea of where we’re at,” Fitzgerald said.
“We know we have a long way to go.”e loss also leaves Riddell at 2-2 aer four
rounds and Bombers coach Jamie Elliott said the result against the Sharks was disappointing.
“I thought we were a bit further along,” he said.
“ey probably controlled the footy and used it better than us.
“We turned the ball over a lot and they just capitalised on their opportunities.
“Our good players got beaten today. ey [the Sharks] came to play and ran us o our legs and were well-deserved winners.”
Elliott said it was disappointing his side was beaten to the ball, especially playing at home.
“We need to learn from our mistakes, look in the mirror and see where we’re at.”
Elliott said one aspect his side had to look at was kicking into the wind, which they had struggled with in both losses.
e club will also wait on the outcome of a report of James Nolan.
Nolan, who has played in the ruck in place of the injured Brayden Allen, has already missed one match this season because of suspension.
Sharks put wrongs right

e Sunbury Jets continue to rack up the wins in Big V women’s division 1, with a hard-fought win over Keilor on Saturday night.
Having won their rst six games of the season, the Jets were again tested in the rst half before stepping it up a level in the second.
e Jets were already without coach Kennedy Kereama and centre-forward Jess Bygate, who are at a New Zealand team training camp and likely to miss at least the next month, while captain Chelsea Burns didn’t take to the court.
It didn’t matter for the Jets, who opened up an early eight-point lead. e margin was decreased to six at half-time, but the Jets regained control of the game in the second half, to win 77-59.
e starting line-up did most of the scoring, with only two points coming from bench players.
Courtney Duever had a massive game with 29 points, 17 rebounds and ve steals. Emma Mahady, Monique Stevens and Kayla eodore all scored double gures as well.
Meanwhile, the men’s side lost at home to Chelsea. Shooting at about 60 per cent for the rst half, Chelsea opened up a 12-point lead at half-time and extended it to 14 points at the last break.
Sunbury were within three points with 27 seconds to go, but that was as close as they got, losing 83-74.
Mitchell Newton had 31 points and 11 rebounds, while Ish Sanders added 29 points.
e Jets have four wins and ve losses from the rst seven rounds.
e Jets youth league sides had mixed results on Sunday.
e men’s division1 outt defeated Bendigo in an up and down game.
Bendigo started the better before the Jets won the middle two quarters. Despite losing the last, the Jets held on 71-63.
Kyle Collins had 21 points for the Jets.e youth league women’s division 2
side lost to Keilor 61-43.Leading by three points at quarter-time,
the Jets lost the next three quarters, and the game.
Kereama and Sanders were recognised during the week, as Big V coach and player of the month respectively.
Sanders is averaging 32 points per game, while the women’s side is undefeated aer the rst seven rounds.

Sunbury Jets add another to winning tally
Kyneton shifts focus in campaign for nals successGoing into the 2016 Bendigo Netball League season, Kyneton decided to take a dierent approach to the previous 12 months.
Aer focusing on making nals last season only to lose, the Tigers are now taking it one week at a time.
Coach Karlie Plowman says the approach seems to be working as the Tigers won their rst three games.
On Saturday, they suered their rst loss, 57-39 to Maryborough.
“It’s a more relaxed approach and we’re keeping expectations a lot lower,” Plowman said.
“is year we’re looking at taking it quarter
by quarter and match by match and playing the game for fun.
“We’ve started well, but we’re mindful we had a similar start last season.”
Despite the low-key approach, the side has been playing some brilliant netball.
“ey have played some really intense netball early on and come out of the blocks quickly,” Plowman said.
“ey’ve set the pace of games and got control in the rst quarter. We’re hoping to stick with what we’re doing now throughout the season.”
A key advantage for the team this year has been stability on and o the court.
It’s Plowman’s second year as A-grade coach aer coming on board late last year.
“ere’s been a lot more time to plan and get my head around things,” she said.
“We’re a lot more settled than last year and we couldn’t be happier with the start to the season.”
Kyneton has managed to keep its 2015 A-grade squad intact.
“Every player has returned and we’ve had another girl, Ashlee Lawrence, come to us at the start of the season.
“She approached us as her partner is now playing football at the club. It turns out she’s an amazing player who’s great to watch.
“I got the girls to play in a midweek competition in Gisborne before the season. ey really enjoyed it and started match-t.”
It’s not just the top side going well, Kyneton’s A-reserve, B-grade and B-reserve teams have settled well into the season.
“I’m most excited about the under-17s,” Plowman said. “It’s the rst time they’ve ever been in the top ve. Alisha Turner has coached them the past few years and done a good job.”
Gisborne’s season has had a slow start, with just one win from its rst four rounds. On Saturday, it lost to Sandhurst, 57-40.

Sunbury Lions’ Madison Prespakis starred for Vic Metro as it dominated the national youth girls championships last week.
Metro was undeniably the best side in its three pool A matches, winning them all by an average of 41 points.
But it saved its best for last, making the MCG its own in the grand nal against Western Australia on Friday night.
e Victorians had already beaten WA by 44 points in a pool match, but they stepped it up another level in the grand nal, dominating in the mideld and up forward, leaving the defenders little to do.
e ball spent most of the game in Metro’s forward half and the Vics made the most of their opportunities in front of goal.
e game was all but over aer the rst quarter, but Metro didn’t take their foot o the pedal in the 14.11 (95)-0.0 (0) trouncing.
Prespakis, 15, was one of the best for Metro in the grand nal win. Playing mostly up forward, she looked dangerous around goal and kicked one goal in the process.
It capped o a good championships for Prespakis – Madi to her friends – who was named among the best players in the other two matches she played. She hit the scoreboard in both those games as well.
Prespakis missed the third round match as she and several other Metro stars were rested because a grand nal place was all but secured.
Her performances had her named in the all-star squad to join a training camp and possibly play in a curtain-raiser to the Western Bulldogs-Melbourne women’s match later in the year.

Riddell and Rupertswood were both below full strength for their Riddell District Netball League match on Saturday yet still provided interesting insights into the two teams.
Both sides lost players to Victorian Netball League matches on Saturday.
e Bombers were hit harder with player unavailability, with Danielle Wilson, Bec Colwell, Lauren and Ellen Close, and Sarah King all missing.
e Sharks were without Alex Maher and Sid Moore, while Stacey Northey is still recovering from a knee injury.
Ailish McCormack, Sara Febbo and Tess Abbott took to the court for the Sharks but were restricted to playing only half a game each.
e Sharks proved the stronger team on the day, getting out to an early lead and holding on for the 50-38 win.
Sharks coach Di McCormack said it was good to get a win over their “arch-rival” any time they could.
“We were lucky enough to have a lot of girls who we could put on sparingly,” McCormack said. “Riddell are always a top unit to come up against; they’re our arch-rival. We knew they were going to bring their best game no matter who they had on court.
“We started with our strongest team … we took a great lead but it dwindled.
“ere’s times as a team, even with our senior players, when they don’t concentrate. It’s something we’ll work on over the coming weeks.
“We did enough in the second half and it was good to get the win, but it wasn’t a true indication of where we or Riddell are at.”
McCormack said she was impressed with how players stepped up when given the chance. ey are likely to get more opportunities during the season with more VNL games scheduled for weekends.
“I was pleased with our B-grade girls and how they stepped up,” the coach added. “Monique Nagle played with Amy Starzer (who scored 31 goals) in goals and they don’t normally play together.
“I was happy to see Eloise Freeman get on the court and Jaz [Jasmine Hooper] has never played with the girls before and came on in a position she doesn’t normally play.
“I was rapt for Jess Dominko to play centre. We’re trying to take her from the defensive end and teach her other areas of the court.”
Elsewhere, Diggers Rest was too good for Broadford, Macedon smashed Woodend-Hesket, Romsey beat Lanceeld, and Melton Centrals won a thriller against Sunbury Kangaroos.

Taekwondo kid gets international exposureWhen Xavier Nikolovski and his parents were looking for a sport for him four years ago, he discovered taekwondo and quickly fell in love with it.
He’s shown a natural ability for the martial art and the 10-year-old has already won several titles in Victoria and interstate.
Now he gets the chance to represent Australia at the 2016 Korean Taekwondo Open in Gyeongju.
His father, Archie, says Xavier has worked hard at the sport.
Xavier had successes last year at the Victorian Winter Open championships and the Victorian Moomba Open and was a medallist at both the Victorian and Australian championships.
“We moved to Gisborne four to ve years ago and we were looking for a sport for Xavier,” Archie said.
“He’s become really good, really quickly … within two and half years of starting he was winning state and Australian titles, and he’s done a lot of training and a lot of travelling to get there.”
Xavier started taekwondo in Gisborne before moving to Martial Fitness Australia (Taekwondo Academy) in Point Cook under Allan Malachowski.
Late last year, he won his black belt.Xavier says he’s very excited about the trip to
South Korea.“I’m not expecting much … it’ll be pretty
hard,” he said. “I enjoy it and ghting is my favourite thing.”
He said his next aim was the world cadet championships in a couple of years, with the long-term aim of making the Olympics.
Archie says the trip to South Korea is the next step in his son’s progress.
Xavier has been well supported in making the trip, with the Gisborne branch of real estate agent RT Edgar coming on board as a sponsor and New Gisborne Primary School also being very supportive.
“He’s done everything he can in Australia and we want to get him international exposure,” Archie said. “ey take some talented young kids who are nine, 10 and 11 and prepare them
for the world cadets, which is the 12-14 age group.
“If they have a few international trips behind them, they’ll know what to expect as they ght dierently overseas.
“We’ll target cadets in the next couple of years, before juniors.”
While overseas, the young Australian team will have an intense training camp before competing in the Korean Open.
“We’re not expecting much, result wise,” Archie said.
“He’s at least a year younger than most of the competitors, and they are allowed to kick to the head.
“We don’t have that in Australia.”

Aer enduring some bad luck in recent weeks, Sunbury United has been buoyed by securing its second win of the FFV state league 2 north-west season.
A double to Harry ompson was enough to secure a 2-1 win against Hume United on Saturday.
Speaking before the match, coach Rob Pianalto said his side had started the season with a tough run of matches.
“It’s been very tough and we’ve been a little unlucky,” he said.
“We’ve played a lot of the better teams to start the season and it’s shown that at this stage we’re not in the elite bracket.”
Despite having just two wins, Pianalto has been impressed with some of what he has seen and says getting a couple of wins on the board will help condence.
Sunbury struggled in the past two years in state league 1 north-west before being relegated for this season.
“When you’re losing games, the mentality is to go into your shell,” Pianalto said.
“We are working hard … what we need is some quality attacking and making the most of our opportunities. e morale is good.”
Pianalto said that while an even spread of players was performing each week, the club wanted to add a few more during the transfer window.
“No one has really stood out,” Pianalto said.
“It’s been pretty even … we would like to see someone take the game by the scru of the neck.”
e coach acknowledged recruitment challenges.
“Players nd it hard to come to Sunbury as they think it’s too far away. Clubs closer to the city are aer those same sort of players.”
Saturday’s win moves Sunbury ahead of Hume United on goal dierence.
Pianalto says the next few weeks will give the side an indication of where it sits.
In state league 5 west, Gisborne and Laverton Park played out a 1-1 draw.
Shane Light was the goal scorer for Gisborne.
Kyneton District suered a 3-2 loss to North Melbourne Athletic.

ere’s myriad 4x4 utes on the Australian market. To the uninitiated they all look the same but for a badge, and they all do their job reasonably well … however, what sets them apart is reputation and brand loyalty.
It’s the latter that probably hasn’t been too kind to Mazda’s stake in the market. While Mazda has achieved the unthinkable in knocking the Toyota Corolla o its perch with the Mazda 3, you can’t see its big-rugged BT-50 ute doing the same to Toyota’s all-conquering Hilux.
at’s not to say the BT-50 isn’t as good. While it’s a big chunky ute with a diesel engine, it’s actually quite rened in terms of interior styling, ride and comfort.
e suspension is a little springy, as you’d expect for a true 4WD, but the handling is smooth, and the 3.2-litre ve-cylinder (yes, ve) turbo diesel gives it plenty of grunt – it’s surprisingly nimble from a standing start.
e automatic transmission in the XTR model I test-drove was excellent, and made o-road driving a lot easier.
It’s also pretty fuel ecient, giving you around 10 litres/100kms combined driving (a bit less or more depending on payload), which is great going for a two-tonne ute.
e interior nish manages to balance blue-collar ruggedness with the quality you’ll nd in Mazda passenger cars. It feels like an SUV, but you won’t feel compelled to take your work boots o before climbing in.
e front seats only have basic adjustments,
but are comfortable, with good back support – important if you spend much of your working week behind the wheel.
e rear seats in the freestyle cab are rudimentary, and you wouldn’t want to sit in them for a long drive. ey feel like a park
bench and have minimal leg room … okay for apprentices, but forget about taking the family to Kakadu.
Of course, the BT-50 does come with a dual cab version that’s one of the roomiest in its class, but this is another story.
e rear seat cushions li up to give extra storage. I must admit I had the car a few days before realising they were accessible via small rearward opening doors – the fact I didn’t notice them says a lot about the design and build quality.
ere are plenty of features for a work vehicle, despite a concerted eort to keep the cost down. ere’s a touch screen, with the usual phone and entertainment options, a trip computer, and you can install urban and o-road satnav, which is included in the top-spec XTR.
e screen doesn’t display the reverse camera image; this shows up in the mirror. I like this concept, but the image is pretty small.
e side mirrors, however, are huge. I remember my driving instructor telling me to live in my mirrors – you could almost take him literally with these … they’re excellent.
e o-road driving was fun. ere’s plenty of clearance and you can be helped in particularly rough terrain with hill-descent control and hill-start assist.
On-road safety features include an emergency stop signal (to help avoid rear-ending someone) and trailer sway control, not that you’d oen need a trailer – the rear cargo area is huge and will carry around 1400 kilograms.
e BT-50 ticks all the boxes, with the added benet of being cheaper than its Toyota Hilux.
Prices for the 4x4 freestyle cab start at $40,990 drive away, while the XTR will set you back $47,990.
By comparison, the base model Hilux 4x4 extra cab will cost you $49,246 to drive home, with the model up commensurately more.
