THE FIRST RELEASE OF Croser was from the 1985 vintage and the winemaking philosophy continues today starting in the vineyard where all the vines are hand pruned, the grapes handpicked, the fruit whole bunch pressed, and the wines hand crafted in the traditional method.
At the heart of the Croser story is the region, the hand crafting and the determination to create something world class.
Croser was created as it was believed that the right region in Australia could produce a sparkling wine that would rival champagne. Quite a bold statement but one that Croser founder, Brian Croser truly believed and so he set out finding that region.
In 1979 he identified a green field’s area within the Adelaide Hills which was not yet used

for wine grape production as being perfect for his sparkling venture. The area was the Piccadilly Valley and at the time was being used for market gardens and fruit orchards.
A combination of rainfall, cool temperatures and diverse aspects over one valley attracted Croser to the area. He planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines for sparkling wines on the south facing slopes and these along with table Chardonnay vines planted on the north facing slopes were the first vineyards planted in the Piccadilly Valley.
The first vintage under the Croser label was 1985. It was crafted in the traditional method, as it was believed this to be the only method to make sparkling wines to rival champagne as it created complexity of texture, flavour, bouquet and those tiny bubbles.

The Range
The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines contributing to Croser lie generally on cool south facing slopes within the Piccadilly Valley at altitudes ranging from 450 metres to 550 metres above sea level.
The vines are hand tended to encourage delivery of a healthy, properly ripened grape crop. And as vintage approaches, Petaluma’s winemakers spend increasing time in the vineyard assessing flavour, sugar and acidity in the grapes.
As ripening time varies considerably across dozens of slopes in ten separate vineyards, this period of intense activity is crucial to quality. Each batch has to be harvested at just the right moment to deliver the proper balance of flavour, delicacy and freshness in Croser.

CROSER NV ROSE PICCADILLY VALLEY
Croser Non-Vintage Rose is a perfect partner to the Croser Non – Vintage Sparkling wine. A blend of 100% Pinot Noir fruit sourced from selected cool climate vineyards across the Adelaide Hills and combined with several back vintage reserve wines of Pinot Noir delivers a sophisticated Methode traditionelle Rose Sparkling.
Fruit for this wine was harvested after our Pinot Noir for Vintage Croser to allow the fruit to develop some riper flavours and aromas adding to its complexity. The Pinot Noir is whole bunch pressed or crushed with free run juice kept separate. After settling the juice is fermented in a combination of 80% stainless steel, with 20% fermented in old oak barriques for added complexity. In addition to this a small portion of approximately one tonne is fermented on skins and added in at blending to deliver a wine with a delicate pink hue.
Post blending and tirage the rose is aged in bottle on yeast for at least 12 months. During disgorging a small amount of Pinot Noir is combined with the dosage liqueur to balance the wines natural acidity and enhance the pink intensity.
Croser NV Rose has a residual sugar of 11gpl which balances the high natural acidity of this wine. The wine has a rich creamy mousse and layers of complexity with aromas of raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates combining with the biscuity, nutty brioche finish.

CROSER VI��A�E 2011 �ICCADILLY VALLEY
The growing season in the Piccadilly Valley leading into the 2011 vintage provided some challenges. Wonderful winter rainfall set the vineyards up beautifully. Spring was warmer than average and also pretty wet, throwing vineyard management curveballs with high growth rates and disease pressure. The season continued in this vein with 128 mm of rain in December, followed by a dry January, and then really wet months of February and March. It felt sub-tropical.
The vineyards and fruit in fact held up remarkably well, and we began hand picking Pinot Noir on the 18th of March, finishing on the 29th of March. Hand picking of the sparkling Chardonnay overlapped, starting on the 26th of March and finishing on the 7th of April.
The hand picked bunches were delivered into our cold rooms and chilled for 24 hours, before whole bunch pressing. This juice was then cold settled and partially clarified before being fermented in older French oak barriques using our chosen yeast strain. Thirty percent of the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks.
At the completion of the alcoholic fermentation all components were inoculated with bacteria to conduct the malo-lactic fermentation (MLF), both to soften the high natural acid and to complex the base wine.
The sparkling base wines were then blended and the 27th consecutive Croser Vintage was tiraged in November 2011.
At tirage the base wine had an addition of yeast and sugar; the yeast then converting the sugar into a small amount of alcohol and carbon dioxide gas, hence the natural bubbles in the wine. This is the beginning of the traditional method (Methode Champenois).
The wine was then allowed to rest in bottle on its yeast lees for nearly three years, before riddling and disgorging began in July 2014. Croser sparkling wines are disgorged on demand with time on lees increasing over the life of the wine.
Petaluma’s 2011 Croser is a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, all from the old vineyards in the Piccadilly Valley, first planted in 1979.
The 2011 Croser is an elegant fine fruit driven complex sparkling wine. The traditional method has guaranteed a delicate persistent fine mousse that explodes on the palate. Raspberry and strawberry from the Pinot and ripe apple from the Chardonnay combine with subtle biscuit and creaminess on the palate. Delicious bracing acidity highlights the fruit.
A fine delicate aperitif style that rewards bottle age, the 2011 Croser Vintage is a complex fruit driven method traditional wine, the latest from a long line started in 1985.
It is a wonderful testament to the great vineyards in the Piccadilly Valley from which it is created.

RED Turkey is a low fat meat, so the wine you pair it with should be low in tannin – because tannins react best with fatty molecules. Another consideration is the fact that we tend to eat turkey with the powerful flavours of cranberry and redcurrant. Choose a young, ripe, fruity wine such as the 2015 Devil’s Corner Pinot Noir. THEY CALL IT THE LAND OF THE LONG LUNCH. And for good reason; with its easygoing charm and gorgeous scenery, the Adelaide Hills has stolen away more than a couple of casual afternoon sit-downs from visitors. It probably also helps that the region is responsible for producing some of the best wines our country has to offer.
HEAD FOR THE HILLS
Ask someone about great Adelaide Hills wine and there’s a good chance they’ll mention Sauvignon Blanc. It’s no coincidence really, seeing as more than thirty-five percent of the sixty or so vineyards in the area plant that variety. It is a coincidence, however, that geology and climate could so perfectly come together to form one of the world’s great cool climate wine regions.
Just 30-odd kilometres from Adelaide’s CBD, the temperature of the Hills is around five degrees cooler than the city, and the rolling terrain and higher rainfall allows for a range of microclimates to form. These cooler conditions during the

growing and ripening seasons maximise the fruity character of grapes to create the sort of crisp, dry, tropical whites the region is so well known for.
Still, Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blancs are traditionally lighter in flavour than their national (and international) counterparts, and make for easier pairing with a wider variety of foods. But don’t think that being easy drinking makes them any less noteworthy. The wines coming out of this area are some of the best you’ll get anywhere in the world. These are wines with pride of place, soul, and the flavours to match.
For those with the travelling bug, the geographic location and climate also makes the Adelaide Hills one of only a handful of places in Australia to experience four truly distinct seasons. And with quaint villages welcoming tourists year-round, this is an area well worth a visit.
But when all’s said and done, we think the true hero in the Land of the Long Lunch will always be the Sauvignon Blanc.
And that’s a really good thing for the rest of us.

THE BROTHERS’ STORYWhile Alex and Theo Giesen were initially travelling abroad in Australia and then through New Zealand, they quickly fell in love with the lands. The brothers noticed a limited range of wines available during a chance visit to a local wine shop, with most bottles from the warmer North Island. Alex and Theo agreed the cooler climate of the South Island would be an ideal place to grow certain wines like Riesling, a popular German varietal. This was the catalyst to purchase their first land, in Burnham on the outskirts of Christchurch.
Alex and Theo contacted their brother Marcel, who was still in Germany, and explained the purchase. Marcel joined his brothers in New Zealand a few years later after completing a degree in winemaking. The brothers’ shared business values and love of wine prompted them to start Giesen Wines. Together, the brothers cultivated what was at that point the world’s southernmost vineyard. The vineyard quickly proved to be an ideal and unique growing environment – one where the brothers could bring their knowledge of growing in colder climates.
GROWING UP IN GERMANY AS THE SONS OF A STONEMASON may not be the most likely start for the founders of a New Zealand winery, but when you look closer, wine is practically running in Theo, Alex and Marcel Giesen’s veins. For centuries, their family members have been involved in the culinary and wine trades, as sommeliers, restaurateurs and other related careers. As youths, the boys had a hobby vineyard that first ignited their interest in grapes.
