8/12/2019 Sheldon Cadet Squadron - Nov 2013
1/4
This year our November
activity was two-fold. Cadets
were given the opportunity to
participate in one of two different
activities. Cadets C/Amn and
above were eligible to attend
Aerospace Education weekend
and C/TSgt and above were eli-
gible to attend the Emergency
Services Weekend. All cadets in-
processed Friday evening, at-
tended a safety meeting then split
in to their appropriate group.
Aerospace Education
WeekendFriday evening cadets
studied astronomy and were able
to get in about an our of star, planets and moon observations
before the clouds set in.
On Saturday the cadets of
AE weekend went to two airports,
Hobby (HOU) and Intercontinen-
tal (IAH). They were both new
experiences for the cadets
and will really help them
learn module two. At Hobby
the cadets volunteered at
the 1940 Air Terminal Mu-
seum by participating in a
F.O.D. search. F.O.D. is the
FAA term for Foreign Ob-
ject Debris. Cadets helped
out by picking up rocks us-
ing the line search method.
When planes and helicop-
ters are taking off or land-
ing F.O.D. is not only potentially
dangerous for those on the
ground, but can cause thousands
to hundreds of thousands of dol-
lars to the planes.
Cadets learned the history
of Hobby and saw the museum. It
was fun for the cadets and they
were able to get a lot of questions
answered about airport opera-
tions. We went to see the flight
simulators too and were able to
see what the inside of different
cockpits looks like.
Afterwards we traveled to-
wards IAH and the cadets ate
lunch about noon near one of the
runways. Cadets enjoyed their
sack lunches of a turkey sub, granola bar, Doritos, grapes, Ca-
priSun, and peanut butter crack-
ers. Then the cadets went to Inter-
continental Airport and saw be-
hind the scenes of the airport. It
was really cool for the cadets and
we got to see the inside of an air-

AE/ES Weekend, continued...plane. Not many people get the access we
did, so we considered ourselves lucky.
We toured the United Airlines
Maintenance Facility and were able to see
planes in different states of maintenance.
One of the planes we got on was in for lightmaintenance, but one had been completely
been torn apart for a D-check (required by
the FAA every four years). We actually saw
the inside of the plane being reconstructed.
After that, we were escorted by Airport Se-
curity to get really close to the runways.
We were able to get out on the runway and
view landings and take-offs. We literally
drove the taxiway and at one point it probably
looked like we were chasing after an airplane.
That was the most fun for the cadets. The cadets also learned about the Fed-
Ex hangar and airplanes. We actually went in-
side one of their cargo planes. The cockpit was
huge and the back was also huge it was bigger
than the cap van. Also, the cadets learned how
they move their cargo by using these tiny roll-
ers, making it easier for them. Cadets got to
see the planes take off and land a few more
times and then we returned to campus. We
were the first cadets in this squadron to do this
activity and it is one most of us will remember
for a long time. The cadets who attended real-
ly enjoyed this exciting event.
Emergency Services WeekendFriday night cadets spent preparing
their equipment and gathering supplies for the
weekend. On Saturday the journey began. The
first part of our adventure was the trip to Shel-
don Lake State Park. We started by walking to
the park and it was a long walk, but bearable. It was fun because we got to bond and know
things that we never knew about each other.
When we got to Sheldon Lake State Park we
unloaded and put the fishing rod together. The
fishing was slow but we still had fun. We also
worked on alternative methods of fishing.
There was even an alligator there too! Overall
it was fun and we even learned a few survival

skills from Capt. Schulin along the way.
After returning to campus we put our
equipment up, took a small break, and then ate
dinner outside. Later that night Capt. Schulin
made us do an exercise based of what we
learned. Our mission was to rescue the survivorsof a plane crash at night. There were 30 quar-
ters, we needed to find and rescue, in a 50 by 30
field, in the dark. We found 25 of them then
couldnt find any more, at that time he gave us
an option to quit but we didnt. After about an
hour he called us over and said On a mission
we cant save everyone but you tried and didnt
give up, and the search was called off for the
night.
The next morning after breakfast we re-
sumed our search for the remaining five quar-ters, who we named the Quartez family. After
about an hour and a half we were able to rescue
them all and the mission was a success. During
the weekend we were able to continue learning
more about Emergency Services and enhance
our skills at conducting line searches.

We had our first combination weekend offering both an Aerospace Education weekend
and an Emergency Services weekend. The AE folks got a chance to see stars and planets
through our telescopes with a full Saturday at both Hobby and Bush Airports. See our Facebook
page for details. The ES folks got to do a long ruck march, do a little fishing and do a late night
mission to save the Quartez family.
The CAP 1.5 had an outstanding week with 15 of 16 passing the Arnold leadership test
and most passing the CPFT as well. CAP II and III will test this week to put us in a great positiongoing into CP Curry 46.
Take the Thanksgiving vacation to get ready for Cp Curry 46. Know your material and be ready
to pass the PT test.
