La importancia de Mn para organismos vivos es considerable:
(i) el Mn tetranuclear cluster que está implicado en la producción de O2 en
fábricas fotosintéticas, algas y cyanobacteria
(ii) enzimas mamíferas como arginase y superóxido mitochondrial dismutase.
(iii) la mayor parte de la bioquímica de Mn puede ser explicada por su actividad
redox, y en otro por su analogía con Mg2+.
En contraste con otros metales activos redox (Fe) es que Mn tiene el potencial
menos que reduce que Fe en la mayor parte de condiciones biológicas; Fe3+ es
estable con relación a Fe2+, Mn2+ con relación a Mn3+ (Por qué ?). Dos conse-
cuencias importantes de esta química redox son que Mn2+ puede participar en la
catálisis redox útil en muchos substrates similares a Fe3+, mientras que más alto
redox potencial de Mn2+ hace Mn2+ libre inocuo en condiciones donde liberado
Fe2+ produciría a radicales hydroxyl. Las células (notablemente células bacter-
ianas) pueden tolerar concentraciones citoplásmicas muy altas de Mn2+ sin
consecuencias negativas; esto no es seguramente el caso con iones metálicos
redox como Fe y Cu.

Mn es el cofactor para el superóxido dismutases, catalases y algún
peroxidases. Estas enzimas son todos usadas para el detoxification de
ROS.
Una propiedad importante de Mn en su (2+) estado de oxidación, que
tiene consecuencias importantes, es un final, pero no sustituto exacto
de Mg2+. Mn2+ con su radio iónico relativamente similar puede
cambiar fácilmente con Mg2+ en la mayor parte de ambientes
estructurales, y expone la mayor parte de los labile, octahedral
química de coordinación. Sin embargo, esto puede acomodar más
fácilmente la deformación en la geometría de coordinación en la
progresión del substrate-ligado al estado de transición y al producto
atado. Por consiguiente, Mn2+ con el sitio activo de un Mg2+-enzyme a
menudo causa la eficacia de enzima mejorada.

Respiración & Fotosíntesis (energy conservation – ATP synthesis – proton-coupled-electron-transfer)
• El uso del aceptador de electrones O2 y la producción fotosintética de O2 (oxidación de la agua, complejo que desarrolla el oxígeno) son dos procesos elementales de la vida que dependen de una red compleja de proteínas del multisitio y enzimas. Redox y la luz conducida en reacciones se usan para la conservación de la energía (bombeo del protón; síntesis de ATP).
• El 3Cu-2Fe enzima cytochrome c oxidase (COX) es el terminal oxidase de la respiración mitochondrial, mientras que el racimo Mn4CaO5 (con un tyrosine cerca) constituye el complejo de desarrollo de oxígeno.
• La reducción de O2 →H2O avanzar sin la liberación de ROS. COX recibe los electrones vía cytochrome c de donde se transfieren a la transferencia electrónica de la valencia mezclada del dinuclear CuA.
• El centro del HEME-CuB constituye el sitio de reducción de O2, que lleva tyrosine atado de un covalently en el sitio activo.

Respiración & Fotosíntesis (energy conservation – ATP synthesis – proton-coupled-electron-transfer)
• COX representa un redox conducido en la bomba del protón, con electrón definido y caminos de transferencia del protón (redox protones contra protones).
• El mecanismo de la reducción de O2 relativamente bien se entiende, su mecanismo ha sido caracterizado tanto por spectroscopic como por técnicas estructurales en la alta resolución. Parece que un tyrosine (radical), además de centros de Cu y Fe, se implica en la catálisis.
• La producción de O2 (PS II) es un proceso de la enzima metalloradical conducido por la luz. La división del agua y la formación de dioxygen en el racimo Mn4CaO5 todavía menos se entienden a pesar de una cantidad enorme de spectroscopic y estudios bioquímicos. Para Mn, que va en bicicleta entre la oxidación declara +2, +3, y +4, se ha sugerido (modelo del S-estado).
• Las nuevas técnicas se han empleado para cultivar mejores cristales de estas moléculas ligadas a la membrana muy grandes para conseguir una resolución debajo de 2 Å, entender su función a un nivel atómico.
