Sample Answers
a) Four techniques of reading the module or materials for assignment::
i) Scanning - a fast reading technique to look for specific information
ii) Skimming – a fast reading technique to gain general impression or superficial knowledge
iii) SQ3R – detailed and analytical reading technique to thoroughly understand and evaluate the materials
iv) Background Reading – a fast reading technique to getan overview of what is being read
Page 14Prepared by Dr Richard Ng (2011)
b) Consequences of not reading the module before tutorial:
Pre-reading helps to:i) activate your prior knowledge;
ii) build mental schemas; andiii) enable us to make intelligent connections.
This will lead to better understanding of the material we are reading and eventually build interest in the classroom
It is important that we read through the whole topic first, so that whatever is discussed in class or whatever is spoken by the tutor is familiar to us. Even if we do not understand all that is being presented, we will at least understand the basic ideas.
Page 15Prepared by Dr Richard Ng (2011)
Being familiar with the issues raised during tutorials makes note-taking easier
Thus we must read before tutorial so that we will be well prepared.
