3. FELLOWSHIP AND SPECIALIZED TRAINING
1. GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute Fellowship (2013-2015) :
I have been awarded the GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute Fellowship on 26th April
2015 at Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai. My education innovation
project for this fellowship program was “ABC of Research: A Learning Program for First
Year Medical Undergraduates at Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad.”. I belong
to the GSMC-FAIMER Regional Institute Fellowship 2013 batch and I was selected for
the said fellowship from amongst 375 applicants from across Asia. I undertook the
FAIMER Fellowship program with the objective of learning and understanding the
principles of medical education through hands-on training, ML Web and institutional
education innovation project so as to use these principles in day-to-day medical teaching
and educational research. I am happy that the education innovation project which was
done for this fellowship has also turned into a scholarship as the work has been
published as a “Really Good Stuff” article in the May 2015 issue of “Medical Education”
journal.
2. Autonomic Function Testing All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) , New
Delhi:
I took a Short-Term Training (Two months) in Autonomic Function Testing at the
Autonomic Function Laboratory, Dept. of Physiology, All India Institute of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi from 19th January 2010 to 17th March 2010. During the
training, I learned the principles of Autonomic Function Testing and independently
evaluated and reported cardiovascular autonomic functions of 70 patients by conducting
the Ewing’s battery of cardiovascular autonomic function tests and Heart Rate
Variability. I also learned the principles of measuring and assessing Blood Pressure
Variability, Baroreceptor Sensitivity, Cerebral Blood Flow Autoregulation (Transcranial
Doppler), Flow Mediated Vasodilatation (Photoplethysmography) and Pulse Wave
velocity (Tonometry, Sphygmocor Technology) with hands-on experience in evaluating
Blood Pressure variability, Baroreceptor Sensitivity and Pulse Wave velocity. I have also
learned the setting-up of an Autonomic Function laboratory.

4. Teaching and Research Philosophy Teaching: Teaching is an art which develops over a period of time due to continuous thinking, dedicated efforts and commitment. Research, updated knowledge and honest assessment of students are the key ingredients of medical teaching while sharing the information with peers and students creates a healthy and positive teaching culture. Adopting student centered innovative and relevant methods of teaching and assessment keeps the profession of teaching exciting and challenging. Student and Peer feedback have a tremendous role in making of a teacher. Medical teaching does not only mean creating technical expertise. Medical teachers must create an environment which emphasizes on integrity, professionalism and a positive attitude towards life apart from imparting scientific knowledge. Teaching medical science is as important as treating a patient and is to be considered as important and critical as is an emergency condition in an emergency room. It is a duty of a teacher to encourage the profession of medical teaching and inspire good medical students to join the profession of Medical Teacher so as to create better healthcare professionals for tomorrow.
Research: Research is the core element for teaching. It helps in understanding concepts and updation of knowledge. Medical research must be conducted so as to develop new strategies and revise the existing strategies for better health, prevention and management of diseases. A basic medical scientist must focus on a particular subject of clinical relevance by interacting with clinicians and allied healthcare professionals. He/ She must work in the relevant subject for a sufficient period of his/her career so as to provide continuous information about the subject to medical fraternity and thereby help in developing strategies and guidelines for healthcare, especially for the local ethnic community. Although, advance technical equipments help in better study, these must not become rate-limiting in a scientist’s research. Scientists must share their work with peers, appreciate the work of peers, acknowledge peers for their inputs and be humble enough to accept critical comments of peers related to his/her work. Scientists must also encourage students and peers to work in their focus area for the better growth of the subject. Research must start in the very begining of medical curriculum during the undergraduate years and in fact during the school. Research must be an integral component of undergraduate medical curriculum.
