1) Introduction
In the world of cables for industrial applications, instrumentation cables certainly form one of the most specialized product families.
The existing national and international cable standards only present partial solutions, often not sufficient to design an instrumentation cable which meets customers specific expectations and withstands to often rude conditions on site.
A combination of expertise in special materials, diversified production facilities and long lasting experience with national and international cables standards allow KBL FAB to offer instrumentation cables, tailored to customer's specific requirements, but solidly based on internationally recognized standards.
KBL FAB also has the appropriate human resources and partners to provide a full project support:

6) Screening
Screenings are applied to prevent or reduce the following interferences:
* Internal interferences caused by neighbouring line-circuits inside the cable.
* External interferences caused by electric devices, such as motors, machineries or power cables.

Identification of each individually screened cabling elements by means of a numbered tape
The stranding elements need to balanced-out in order to reduce crosstalk, therefore Pairs, Triple, and Quads are twisted with different pitch.
8) Laying-up of cabling elements
In most of the cases, cables are laid up in concentric Layers.
For certain cable types, the cabling elements are laid up in Bundles (Bd).
The bundles can be identified for example by means of numbered tape (Bd Z) or by Simatic ring coding (Bd Si).
9) Metallic barrier against aggressive liquids
When used in Petrochemical Installations, cables often require an additional metallic covering to make the cable transversally tight against aggressive liquids or polluted water, in case the outher-sheath would be damaged.

10) Armourings
Very often, the cables require an armouring as additional protection against mechanical impacts during installation and operation. Those armouring can be also fulfil electrical functions as earthing interconnection, screen or interference protection.
a. Double steel tape armouring (B)
Two layers of galvanized or bare steel providing 100% coverage of the cable core.
Diameter of cable core minimum 8 mm under armouring.
GOOD protection against PRESSURE and SHOCK.
GOOD RODENT protection.
COST SAVING and light-weight.
Armouring providing BEST LOW FREQUENCY INDUCTION PROTECTION.
Not resistant to tractive force.
b. Galvanized steel wire braid (Q)
A galvanized steel wire braid providing min. 82% optical coverage (min. wire diameter is 0,3 mm).
GOOD MECHANICAL protection.
FAIR TENSILE STRENGTH.
LIGHT WEIGHT.
Armouring allowing SMALLEST BENDING RADIUS of the cable.
No diameter limitation for cable core to be braided.

c. Galvanized flat steel wire braid (Z)
A braid consisting of galvanized FLAT STEEL WIRES.
Same properties as a normal braid described under a), but IMPROVED TENSILE STRENTGH.
d. Galvanized steel wire armouring (R)
In (RE) terminology it is known as SWA.
A concentric layer of galvanized round steel wires, providing over 90% optical coverage.
GOOD MECHANICAL PROTECTION.
GOOD TENSILE STRENGTH.
FAIR BENDING properties.
GOOD RODENT PROTECTION.

13) Construction examples
In this chapter we show you some examples about different constructions. Please note, these constructions are only examples, the real product range is much wider, due to the different specifications from customers.
KBL FAB uses MSR for the name convention of instrumentation cables, but other name conventions are also available, for example RE. You can use this catalog as a guide to those cables, there are no significant differences between them.
For example MSR 2Y(St)YBY widely used instead of RE 2Y(St)YSWAY-fl, because the electrical construction is similar, but in the armoring of the MSR cable is more flexible, its weight is less and normally cheaper than RE.

15) Questions and answers
Why MSR has no -fl sign in the code?
MSR does not require to use this sign, because by default all used materials are flame retardant according to IEC 60332-3. Using -fl sign technically is unnecessary, it has only marketing value.
Why do you recommend armouring B instead of SWA or R?
Steel tape armouring is more flexible and lighter comparing to steel wire armouring. Our partners give us feedback, in normal conditions (laying up in cable tray or underground) the YBY is better to work with than steel wire armouring cables. Normally this solution is cheaper than the other one.
Why do you use 2Y as standard insulation instead of Y?
The insulation of the core is polyethylene (2Y), which is better for longer cables section and it provides less capacitance. The price of 2Y is a little bit higher than Y (usually 1-3%), but using 2Y is safer than Y, especially when you must change an existing and unknown instrumentation cables from an old installation.
We provide the better product to you, but if the specification defines the insulation as PVC we will deliver that product to our customer.
What is the difference between copper and AL/PETP screens?
There are two main types of screens:
copper wire/tape screens (different structures)
It increases protection against electromagnetic interferences and it decreases electrical resistance.
AL/PETP (25μm/23μm) laminated tape with copper drain wire
It increases protection against electrostatic interferences.
