Codex neapolitanus.Dioscurides Neapolitanus.
Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli.
The precious codex known as the Dioscurides Neapolitanus contains the work
of Pedanius Dioscorides, the Greek physician who was born at Anazarbus near Tarsus in Cilicia (present-day Turkey) and
lived in the first century AD during the reign of the Emperor Nero. Dioscorides wrote the
treatise Perì üles iatrichès, commonly known in Latin as De materia medica (Of medical substances), in five books. It is considered the most important medical manual and pharmacopeia of ancient
Greece and Rome and was highly regarded in the Middle Ages in both the Western and
Arab worlds. The work covers the therapeutic effectiveness of natural
substances originating in the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms.
The codex at the National Library of Naples includes only the herbal, which, in its 170
illustrated pages, covers all the known medicinal plants with a commentary that describes each plant, its habitat, and its
therapeutic uses. The Dioscurides Neapolitanus is strongly associated with the
Dioscurides Costantinopolitanus in Vienna, which was produced in Constantinople in
512 for Princess Anicia Giuliana, the daughter of the Western Roman Emperor
Olybrius; both works probably derive from a common archetype. However, the Neapolitan
codex does not contain the same anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures that appear in the Viennese codex and in other Dioscorides codices, such as those held in Paris and at the Palazzo Chigi in Rome. The liveliness of the illustrations, rendered more precious by such detailed
commentary, contributes to the antiquarian value of this extremely rare manuscript.
The work is also a fundamental source for the study of Greco-Roman medical culture and its reception in the Italian Byzantine world around the end of the sixth and beginning of the seventh
centuries. It provides evidence of the intellectual and cultural trends of that era, including a certain preference for a didactic type of text that resembles more a manual than a scientific treatise. As already hypothesized at the end of the 17th century by Bernard de Montfaucon, when he saw the
Dioscurides Neapolitanus in Naples and praised it for its beauty, the manuscript is undoubtedly of Italian origin, although exactly where in Italy it was made is unclear. Some scholars trace it to the
Exarchate of Ravenna, while others argue it is from the south, in a milieu influenced by the Roman statesman and writer Cassiodorus (circa 487–circa 580).

romano Casiodoro (circa 487-circa 580).

The Dioscorides NeapolitanusThe most famous pharmacological standard guide of all historyNeapel, Bibliotèca Nazionale, Ms. ex Vindob. gr. 1, Byzanz or Southern Italy, beginning of the 7th century
( יצאה לאור מהדורת פקסימיליה מכתב היד על ידי מוזיאון אבוקה והספרייה הלאומית של נפולי2013בשנה זו )
The Codex Neapolitanus is one of the oldest manuscripts in the tradition of Materia Medica, the leading pharmacological work of Greco-Roman times, written by the Greek surgeon Pedanius Dioscorides in the 1st century A.D. The eminent role of this codex is not least due to the great number of botanical illustrations and descriptions of plants in all their details. The primary significance of Dioscorides as a major authority in his field is evidenced by the wide spread use of his work over the centuries. In the 6th century it was translated into Latin and from the 9th century, it was transliterated and edited also in Arabic, Syrian and Hebrew. Materia Medica thus remained the pharmacological reference work and was read not only by physicians and botanists but also by interested lay botanists. The Neapolitan codex can be dated to the early 7th century, although research still ignores whether it was made in Byzantium or in Italy. G. Cavallo suggests that the miniatures in the manuscript were obviously a product of the activity of Greek artists in Italy. The 403 miniatures depict different plants and bear unique testimony to the unmatched virtuosity of the illuminators of this period.

Aboca Museum - De materia medica - Il Dioscoride di Napoli
The miniaturesThe botanical illustrations in the Codex Neapolitanus, according to some, are not originals of early
Byzantine book illumination but rather constitute copies of more ancient models which are probably based on the herbal of Crateuas, a source used by Dioscorides, and thus go back to the Alexandrian or
Pergamenes textbook illustrations of the 2nd and 1st pre-Christian centuries. In a successful didactic approach, one to three illustrations of plants are found in the upper half of each recto page and described in the text below. The verso pages are, however, mostly left blank or carry only additional text, in the attempt to avoid possible interference with the picture composition due to colour
showing through the vellum. The hand used is the so-called Bible majuscule, a square type appreciated for its good readability. The
division of the text in two columns also guarantees easy use. Below the botanical illustrations, the names of plants were added in red ink, thus keeping to a very synoptic layout. Later annotations added
throughout the manuscript justify the great esteem for the Neapolitan codex which was frequently used over the centuries. Even today, Dioscorides is referred to in context with certain plants and drugs.
A physician’s reference workDioscorides treats one plant per chapter. Its designation and synonyms are followed by a
description of its properties as well as information on its origin and effect, preparation, use and dosage. The work, whose significance applies both to the fields of botany and pharmacology,
was above all conceived as a textbook on drugs for use by physicians.A striking feature of the Codex Neapolitanus is the lexical rearrangement of its contents in
alphabetical order. The systematic order according to the therapeutic properties of plants was supplanted to enable users finding their way round the book as quickly as possible.
The history of the manuscriptWe know little about the history of the manuscript. Until the early 18th century, it was kept in the
Augustine monastery S. Giovanny a Carbonara in Naples. In 1718, the Habsburgs took it back with them to the Viennese Court Library and the conclusion of the peace negotiations after World War I, the codex returned to Naples in 1919, this time to the Biblioteca Nazionale, and now belongs to the
most precious gems of this richly stocked library.
Aboca Museum, the one and only Museum of medicinal plants, is dedicated
to rediscovering and passing on the millennia-old history of the relationship
between man and plants. The “Herbs and Health over the centuries”
exhibit in the magni!cent renaissance building in Sansepolcro makes use of historical sources to share the ancient tradition of medicinal plants: valuable
herbals, pharmaceutical botany books, ancient mortars, ceramics and glassware.Ancient workshops, faithfully reproduced, evoke fascinating glimpses of the past for visitors to the museum. Here, interesting
facts, anecdotes and natural perfumes are woven together to recount herbal lore
through the centuries.
Aboca Museum
The Aboca Museum's Bibliotheca Antiqua is a remarkable collection of valuable old books dealing specifically with the subject of the use of medicinal plants over the ages. Each one of the 1,500 books in the collection documents a period in the history of mankind and man's knowledge of the use of plants for healing.
The books come from different epochs: the oldest ones, those from the beginning of the printing era and the newest from the beginning of the 19th century. In the past, the illustrations in herbals were essential to enable identification of the plant species. With the passage of time these illustrations have become valuable works of art, enriching each treatise with colour and beauty, and bearing witness to the evolution of phytographic techniques. The printed herbals are texts that contain names and descriptions of herbs and plants, their properties and virtues.
The illustrations in them show how the artist/scientist rolled into one was able to put something beautiful, marvellous and minutely detailed onto paper, typical of a work of art used as a tool with strictly medical application. In other words, this is art at the service of health. Alongside the herbal botany books, there are many more books on pharmacology, chemistry, medicine and ancient medical secrets.
The latter record "the wisdom of the people" over the centuries. The Aboca Museum Study Centre's final ambitious project is to collect old books on medicinal plants from all continents, in order to have the richest historical documentation possible. The Library of Antique Books, located on the fourth floor of the Bourbon del Monte palace can be consulted for study purposes only by prior appointment.
