With over three decades of experience in
teaching and education administration,
Maureen McCoy is no novice to China. She
worked as Curriculum Coordinator, and then
Secondary Principal at the Dalian American
International School from 2011 through 2015.
She has taught for over 20 years in high
school and middle school in Hong Kong and
the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. Dr. McCoy
has a B.A. degree in History and a Master of
Arts in Teaching from Reed College in Oregon.
She also earned a Doctorate from Nova
Southeastern University with a dissertation on
‘Teachers’ Experiences with English Language
Learners’ Difficulty with Mastering Academic
Literacy’. Dr. McCoy has IB MYP experience,
and is an important player in Keystone’s work
with building secondary students’ bilingual
academic expertise.
Maureen McCoy女士在教学和教育管理领域拥有
30余年的工作经验。2011到2015年间,她先后在大
连美国国际学校担任课程协调员和中学部校长,
因此对中国也颇为熟悉。她曾在香港和美国太平
洋西北地区从事初中和高中教学20余年。McCoy
博士在美国俄勒冈州里德学院(Reed College)先
后获得了历史专业学士学位和教育文学硕士学
位,还获得了诺瓦东南大学(Nova Southeastern
University)博士学位,博士论文题为“以教学体验
论英语语言学习者掌握学术读写能力之难”。McCoy

Language is a passage through, and of,
social knowledge. It not only enables us to
understand who we are through the dialectics
of culture, the semantics of history, and the
many manifestations of linguistics, but it
also allows us to connect with others. It is a
widely accepted fact that linguistic fluency in
more than one language has significant and
lifelong benefits. Bilingualism is fundamentally
important to Keystone Academy; it is a school
mission and academic philosophy. Our goal
is for graduates to think, speak, read, analyze,
and create with equal fluency in Chinese and
English.
But is it possible? Can students achieve native-
level fluency in two or more languages? Can a
student’s brain capture the syntactic nuances
of languages as diverse as Chinese and English?
Would that not confuse students? Would not
learning such distinct languages lead to social
and neurological chaos? Is a bilingual brain
different? How so?
Keystone’s Head of Middle School, Maureen
McCoy, who has been researching bilingualism
through the perspective of English Language
Learners, gives us a peek into the bilingual
brain. Dr. McCoy reveals some of the good
practices of English Language Acquisition in
the classroom and beyond. This lecture will be
valuable to parents, students and educators
alike. Come and find out how the bilingual brain
works, what you can do as teachers to scaffold
and support language learning, what parents
and students can do outside the classroom to
complement language acquisition.

For Professor. Dong Mei Chinese classical
literature is not only an academic pursuit,
but also a passion and lifelong journey. She
has been researching and teaching Chinese
classical literature for years. Presently she
is an Associate Professor at the School of
Humanities, China Central Academy of Fine
Arts. She holds a Masters degree in Chinese
Literature. Through her teaching, she aims
to revive the vitality and appeal of Chinese
classical literature and culture, expose her
students to their beauty and essence, and help
people in modern society form more dynamic
and enriching values by alluding to ancient
Chinese culture and wisdom.
董梅老师长期从事中国古典文学研究和教学工作,
有着较深厚的专业积淀和学术修养,对中国文化充
满热爱和求知欲。在教学中,主张对中国古典文学
与文化的生命力与魅力的“唤醒”,以此来认识和

There are bonds that tether human beings, as
with other living things, to the laws of nature,
and the norms and practices constructed
around them. Many early civilizations existed
by these laws; some practices have remained,
some evolved naturally or technologically, and
others have dissipated, or simply fallen out of
practice. China is one such ancient civilization
that has a deeply rooted natural ethos that
forms an intrinsic part of the country’s culture.
The ancient Chinese lived in harmony with the
changing seasons, well known as the 24 solar
terms and 72 pentads (five-day intervals).
This system helped the Chinese manage their
lives on the basis of the seasonal variations,
and farm based on celestial movements and
events.
However the 24 segments were not only a way
of life, but also a way of knowing life. This is
evident in China’s rich language and literature
that has been inspired beyond measure by
nature and its extraordinary beauty. Far beyond
just words and meaning, China’s literati have
instilled the country’s intricate culture with a
value system from the essence of nature. As
Tao Yuanming, a renowned 4th century Chinese
poet wrote, “With the changing of seasons,
warm and beautiful mornings are upon us
again…all living things thrive by observing the
laws of nature.” This harmonious coexistence
between human beings and nature not only
resonates in words, but also brush strokes and
the unique tradition of Chinese paintings.
There is a deep well of knowledge that is
encapsulated in the Chinese system of the
24 solar terms. In this unmatched salon,
Professor. Dong Mei reveals its beauty and
magnificence, bringing you closer to Chinese
culture through literature and art. She believes
that by interpreting this natural cycle, and the
ancient calendars, we return to nature, and

由一丛野花而起,其中照见的是东西方内在两种
截然不同却无分高下的自然观与价值观。
人与万物其实都是天地规律之中的存在,人与自然
平等同在,这是深植于东方文化观与哲学观之中的
概念。自上古以来,中国的古人们就依四时春夏秋
冬的流转,自然的变化规律中提取了二十四节气、
七十二征候。因天时而有地气,而决定人事,“遵四
时以叹逝”,依“天象”而指导农耕人事。
不仅如此,历代文人雅士不仅从自然中汲取创作的

义的中国文化怀有浓厚兴趣,随着多年的学习和追
问,董梅教授逐渐在中国文化精神的引领下发现了

graduates – Carol Li Rafferty, Managing
Director of Yale Center Beijing, and Colm
Rafferty, Vice Chairman of American Chamber
of Commerce in China and Vice President for
Vermeer Corporation – to join our discussion
on “Choose a School, Choose a Perspective
on Life” and share their views on education.
Carol Li Rafferty had served as an admission
officer at Yale for more than a decade. After
graduating from Yale with double majors in
Economics and International Studies, Carol
went on to receive her J.D. from Stanford Law
School. Colm Rafferty received an MBA from
the Yale School of Management; and before
that, he was an undergraduate student at
Brown University, where he completed his
Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in East Asian
Studies.
Our guest speakers will draw upon their
experiences from Yale, Stanford, and Brown
to present the true meanings and values of an
Ivy League education from the perspectives of
both Chinese and American students. They will
also share how these top schools have enriched
their lives as well as their understanding and
reflections on elite education.

Carol Li Rafferty is managing director of
Yale Center Beijing, a convening space and
intellectual hub for Yale University’s activities
in China. As the inaugural head of the
Center, Carol is responsible for building and
maintaining relationships with key business,
government and thought leaders from all
disciplines and developing programs that
facilitate meaningful dialogue between China
and the world.
Prior to this role, Carol was senior vice
president at the China Investment Corporation
(CIC), China’s sovereign wealth fund,
where she worked on strategic and private
equity investments. Carol has a passion for
championing women’s empowerment in
China and co-founded the Lean In Beijing
organization in 2013, which has grown into a
network of over 80,000 women across China
and helps professional women from diverse
fields to advance into leadership positions.
Carol is a member of the founding family
of the Bank of East Asia (HKSE: 23), and her
grandfather founded the Hong Kong Stock
Exchange (HKSE).Carol received her J.D.
degree from Stanford Law School, where she
was articles editor of the Stanford Law Review.
She graduated cum laude from Yale University,
with dual B.A. degrees in Economics and
International Studies. Carol is a Fellow of
the Aspen Institute and has been selected
as a 2016 Young Global Leader by the World
Economic Forum.

Colm Rafferty is the Vice President – Asia
Pacific for Vermeer Corporation and is
Chairman of Vermeer China Limited.
Vermeer is an equipment manufacturer
from the Midwest of the United States, with
products used for agricultural mechanization,
environmental protection, infrastructure
development, and non-blast surface mining.
Vermeer’s CEO is the Co-Chair of the B20
Global SME & Entrepreneurship Committee,
is a member of President Barack Obama’s
Export Council (PEC), and is former Chair of
the National Association of Manufacturers
(NAM), the largest industrial trade association
in the United States.
Prior to joining Vermeer, Colm was Director of
China Distribution Operations for Cummins
(NYSE: CMI), with both operational and
P&L responsibility for the company-owned
distributors. During his time with Cummins,
Colm held a variety of other leadership roles
including Head of Emerging Markets Strategic
Planning, where he oversaw the company’s
strategy & business development efforts
in China, India, and Russia. Before joining
Cummins, Colm worked for Alibaba Group
(NYSE: BABA), where he was employee #120,
and Director of Business Development.
Colm received an MBA from the Yale School of
Management, and a Bachelor of Arts degree
in East Asian Studies from Brown University.
He currently serves on the Yale University
Asia Development Council, the Yale School
of Management’s Greater China Advisory
Board, the Executive Committee of the Beijing
Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization
(YPO), and is Vice Chairman of the American
Chamber of Commerce in China.

Nancy Chen is an Education Officer in the
United States Embassy in Beijing. She manages
EducationUSA and the Fulbright programs in
China. She has also served in embassies in
Australia and Mexico. Prior to her work with the
U.S. State Department, Ms. Chen worked for
an international NGO based in California. She
holds a Bachelors degree in Communication
Studies from Northwestern University, a
Masters degree in Communications from Wake
Forest University, and a second Masters degree
in International Relations from Yale University.
Ms. Chen is a native of South Carolina, and is
in China with her three children and husband,
who is also a diplomat in the U.S. Embassy.

American universities and colleges are top
destinations for students in China. According
to the Institute of International Education, in
2014-2015 over 30% of international students
in the U.S. were from China, making Chinese
students the largest group to vie for admission
in the U.S. However, of the total number
of students enrolled in the U.S. – local and
international – only 4.8% are international
students. With an increasing number of
Chinese students and intensifying competition
for a limited number of seats, what can you
do to ensure that you get admitted to the
university of your choice?
Perhaps the first step is to choose the
universities you apply to wisely. But, how can
you make the right choice or put together a
list of options? What should you know to make
the right choice? Should you go for the big
names, or big cities when choosing where to
study? Should crime statistics and standard
of living weigh in on your decision-making
process? Or would a careful assessment of the
fields of study that align with your interests
and passion provide a better solution to your
higher education dilemma?
Making decisions about higher education is
not easy. Nancy Chen from EducationUSA

Gong Pengcheng, renowned scholar and
thinker, was born in Taipei in 1956 and graduated
with a doctorate from the Department of
Chinese, National Taiwan Normal University.
He served as the head of the Department of
Chinese Literature at Tamkang University,
the founding president of Nanhua University
and Fo Guang University, and was granted
the Taiwan Zhongshan Literature and Arts
Award, Zhongxing Literature and Arts Award
and the Award for Excellent Research. He has
served as a guest professor at Beijing Normal
University, Tsinghua University and NanJing
Normal University since 2004 and is currently
a professor in the Department of Chinese
Language and Literature at Peking University.
龚鹏程,江西吉安人,1956年生于台北。是当代
著名学者和思想家。台湾师范大学国文研究所博
士毕业,历任淡江大学文学院院长、台湾南华
大学、佛光大学创校校长、美国欧亚大学校长等
职。曾获台湾中山文艺奖、中兴文艺奖、杰出研
究奖等。2004年起,任北京师范大学、清华大
学、南京师范大学教授。现为北京大学中文系
教授。

In the middle of the last century, French
philosopher, novelist and literary critic, Jean
Paul Sartre asked an important question
– What is Literature? In an over 150-page
book of the same title, he elucidated on this
existential conundrum. Towards the end of this
authoritative work, one phrase captures the
essence of his thesis:
“Literature is the subjectivity of a society in
permanent revolution.”
Sartre’s exposition of life in written form, as it
were, rests on the premise that literature, or the
written word is embedded in the continuum
of time and space. Though some of the best-
written works resonates across time, they have
to be written and read within a historical, and
socio-political timeframe. To be able to make
sense of a literary piece of work in the present,
one would have to engage in a cross-temporal
dialectic of meaning, significance and purpose.
But how do we go about achieving this? How
do we engage in literature by not only reading
and comprehending in the present, but also
delve deeper beyond just the written word?
We may not have Jean Paul Sartre to give us
the answers, but someone who has been
propagating a similar school of thought in
Chinese classical literature – Professor. Gong
Pengcheng.
His school of thought also advocates for an
interdisciplinary reading of Chinese literature,
which is missing in the present, academically
and socially, Professor. Gong bemoans. In
this edition of the Education Salon, Professor.
Gong will traverse the rich history and tradition
of Chinese classical literature, and help us
achieve linguistic depth by examining some
works through an interdisciplinary approach.
Come, and read between the lines, and
transcend literary and linguistic boundaries.

“关关雎鸠,在河之洲,窈窕淑女,君子好逑。”不
少人将《关雎》里这一句经典的理解停留在一般意
义的“男女慕恋”。然而,《诗经》的时代,君的儿子
唤做君子,“君子好逑”讲的是“君子”的求偶。如
此,后面的“钟鼓乐之”、“琴瑟友之”这些寻常人家
听不到的器乐之奏才说得通。讲《关雎》如果只是“
发乎情”,做普通情诗读,却不能“以礼止乎”,深
入其中的人文礼义之教,那真是浅俗化了经典,只
见树木而忘记了森林。
台湾学者、北京大学教授龚鹏程先生一直反对这
种管中窥豹的文学学习方式。文学,是人类对自
然、社会和自我的总体呈现,其内涵浩若烟海,
要真正理解它,非要丰富的知识和手段不可;以
往分类琐细、文史哲楚河不犯汉界的授课窠臼也
要打破。
龚先生将文学和文化、社会的方方面面关联起
来,将文学作品放到几千年的社会和文化大格局
中详加考量,也透过文学的视角观察中国文化
和社会的内涵,天文地理、花鸟虫鱼、衣食住
行……纵横交错,包罗万象,成为一幅兼顾各方
知识的宏大文学图景。
“博学”便有悖于“专精”的传统。“博学”更
好还是“专精”有益,仁者见仁。鼎石素来主张
兼收并蓄,尊重不同的想法和观点。请您和我们
一起,以包容而好奇的心态,来倾听这样一位学
者不太一样的声音:

What will the future of education look like?
Will education become more integrated into
the global environment? Will there be a push
to develop students’ individual personalities?
Will a new model of education cut across
cultural boundaries? Speakers at Keystone’s
inaugural education salon believe that the
future of education lie in all of the above and
more. A teacher, a student, a parent and three
distinguished educators presented their vision
of future education from their experiences.
They all pointed to one thing – a holistic model
of education.
Richard Todd, an arts teacher with more than
20 years international expereince, emphasized
the need for education to incorporate the
current challenges of a society. This, he
believes, will enable students to adapt to the
rapidly changing environments and come up

with their own solutions. Meanwhile, 16-year-
old April presented a teenager’s Education
Utopia. As a parent, Ms. Chen stressed that
international schools are capable of cultivating
student’s independent thought and problem-
solving skills.
However, Keystone’s President Dr. Edward
Shanahan advocated for a model of education
that combines the curriculum and practices of
America’s best schools with Chinese culture.
This model, he said, would allow students
to experience a world-class education, while
maintaining a strong foundation in their
own cultural identity. Connecting the local
and global is what Head of School, Malcolm
McKenzie, stressed, given his role as an
international educator in China. Concluding
the diverse array of speakers was Head of
Beijing No. 4 High School, Mr. Liu Changming.

Mr. Liu believes, as an educator for over three
decades, that a good education must pay close
attention to developing a student’s abilities
and accomplishments.
Keystone Academy is an educational revolution
in that it transcends cultural boundaries, and
weaves together the best pedagogical practices
of American, international and Chinese
education. The result is a first-class education
that maintains Chinese language, history and
culture identities, cultivates appreciation for
other cultures, and leads students in a life of
service to the community.
Edward Shanahan has been in secondary and post-secondary education
in New England for over 40 years. From 1972 to 1981, he was Dean of
Students and member of the faculty at Wesleyan University; then he
became Dean of College and member of faculty at Dartmouth College,
from 1981 to 1991, and in the last 20 years till 2011, Dr. Shanahan was
Headmaster of Choate Rosemary Hall. He has also served as Chair of
the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE), and later
as President of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges
(NEASC). He is the Founding President of Keystone Academy, in addition
to being the Executive Director of the Eight Schools Association (ESA),
a consortium of distinguished New England boarding schools, as well
as a Life Trustee of Choate Rosemary Hall. And for the last decade, Dr.
Shanahan has been presiding over the Board of Directors of the Icahn
Foundation for Greater Opportunity.
Malcolm Mckenzie grew up in South Africa, and studied at the
Universities of Cape Town, Oxford and Lancaster. He has degrees
in Literature, Philosophy and Applied Linguistics. He was also the
first Bicentennial Fellow at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. Mr.
McKenzie started his academic career as a university lecturer, but moved
into school teaching, and school leading, nearly 30 years ago. He has
been Principal of three schools, Maru-a-Pula School in Botswana, The
United World College of the Atlantic in Wales, and The Hotchkiss School
in Connecticut, U.S. Mr. McKenzie has also served on the Board of the
Round Square Association, which numbers approximately 100 schools
worldwide. He was a co-founder of the Global Connections Foundation
in 1997 and is now Director of this confederation of schools. Although he
is a hands-on school leader, who loves spending time with students, Mr.
McKenzie still writes extensively on education.

离看国际教育”沙龙系列之“未来的教育”。6位不
同背景的演讲嘉宾,从自己的经历和对未来教育的
认知出发,与50多位到场嘉宾一同探讨了精英教育
在中国的另一种可能。
有着20多年国际学校教学经验的资深艺术教师
Richard Todd着眼于人类目前面临的能源、污染、交
通、生存空间等种种挑战,认为学校应当结合实际,
着眼未来,创造性地对传统教学体系和课程设置做
出相应的改革。无论公立或私立,不管其规模的大
小,都应该真正把握未来的实际需求;帮助学生适
应多变的环境,寻找可行的方法解决问题,让他们
能够承受生活中可能面临的挑战。
16岁的April是一名从公立名校转到国际学校的学
生,游历过很多美国名校,并且刚刚结束在耶鲁大
学的暑期培训课程。她向大家讲述了一个少年心中
的“教育乌托邦”。一直关注教育发展的陈可蕾也
受邀参与本次沙龙,陈可蕾的女儿曾就读于北京的
一所国际学校,去年考入香港大学。她从家长的角
度着重分享了国际学校在培养孩子独立思考能力
和解决问题能力方面的优势。

What are international admission standards in
the US? Do different colleges and universities
have different standards? How do their
admissions processes work? How do their
education principles differ from those in China?
Keystone’s second education salon, “From
Top Prep Schools to the Ivy League,” revealed
answers to these questions and more. Head
of School, Malcolm McKenzie, facilitated the
discussion between the speakers – Keystone’s
Dean of Admission, Rachael Beare, and Mr. Karl
M. Furstenburg, former Dean of Admission and
Financial Aid at Dartmouth University.
Together with highlighting a student’s
individual traits, Ms. Beare emphasized the
importance of highlighting a student’s unique
qualities to be successful in the application
process. As someone with experience in the
American admission system, she notes that it is
imperative for applicants to do their homework

on the schools to which they are applying.
This ensures that the school is a good fit for
the students and their interests. Meanwhile,
Mr. Furstenberg spoke about his experience
reviewing applications.
In his work at Dartmouth College, Mr.
Furstenberg said that he and his team looked
for answers to questions such as: What has
the applicant achieved to date? In what areas
or direction is this applicant likely to develop?
And, what are some future achievements the
applicant might strive for? He added that
during his tenure he added an additional
requirement: one recommendation letter from
either a classmate or friend. This, he believes,
strengthens the uniqueness and validity of an
applicant’s story.
However, the biggest challenge for parents is
in making the decision to send one’s child to

study abroad even before college. Ms. Beare
feels differently. She advocates for studying at
home, being with the family and still getting
the best of a global education. She believes that
importing the U.S.-style boarding education
system to China gives parents and children the
best of both worlds: a child doesn’t need to
travel too far at an early age, while also learning
under the guidance of highly qualified teachers.
This gives the child more time to study, attend
school events or socialize with classmates. All
this facilitates a child’s growth, nurtures their
independence, and enables them to understand
decision making better.
Rachael Beare comes to Keystone Academy from
The Hotchkiss School, one of the top boarding
schools in New England, where she was the Dean
of Admission and Financial Aid from 2008-2012.
Her career in admission and financial aid spans
more than 20 years and has taken her to many
day and boarding schools in the United States,
including Lakeside School, a leading day school in
Seattle, Washington, where she was the Director
of Admissions & Financial Aid for ten years;
Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire;
Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts; and
Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut, her alma
mater. Ms. Beare is also a founding Director of the
Board for the Association of Independent School
Admission Professionals (AISAP), and has been a
member of the Board’s Finance and Governance
committees. Ms. Beare graduated from Amherst
College with a B.A. in English, magna cum laude,
and earned her Ed.M. from Harvard University’s
Graduate School of Education.
Karl Furstenberg worked in selective university
admissions for 30 years. He served as Dean
of Admissions and Financial Aid at Wesleyan
University from 1977-1990 and held the same
position at Dartmouth College from 1990 until
his retirement in 2007. Karl also served as
Associate Provost at Dartmouth from 1998-
2007. As Associate Provost he was responsible
for the development of a centralized planning
function and the establishment and operation
of the Office of Institutional Research. He had
overall responsibility for implementation of a
new student information system for Dartmouth
undergraduate, graduate, and professional
schools. As a senior officer at Dartmouth, Karl
worked closely with the President and Trustees
on issues of academic mission, curriculum,
student enrollment, financial aid, and strategic
planning. For several years he was Chair of the
Ivy League Admissions Committee.

Beare女士非常赞同在座家长们提出的特质。知
晓“八校联盟”招生决策过程的她,还分享了一
些鲜为人知的“内幕”。比如每所学校所看重的
内容不同,有的学校偏向环保意识,有的学校极
为看重孩子的好奇心,还有的学校看重领导力。
她还举例,若学校乐队中有个担任小提琴手的学
生毕业了,那么这一年必然需要招收优秀的小提
琴手来继承和发扬学校的艺术传统。因此,申请
过程中了解学校,做足功课,是十分必要的。而
作为学生,更重要的是要在保证优异的学习成绩
之外真正地了解自己,才能展现自己独特的优势
和特质。
在座家长们提出的众多标准同样让Furstenberg先
生印象深刻。他强调在Dartmouth College,他和

招生部的同事们会一起研究申请者已经取得了
哪些成就,他/她的发展方向是什么,未来可能
取得哪些成就,把所有的申请材料综合在一起,
把每个申请者作为一个完整的人来审视。他还提
到,在他担任招生负责人期间,额外增加了一个
要求:申请者要附上一封来自同学或者朋友的推
荐信。他认为常春藤盟校共同的招生理念是每个
人必然都有一个真实而独特的故事,没有人可以
伪造,所以给申请者的建议就是一定要用有限的
申请材料讲述属于自己的故事。
什么时候送孩子出国留学,是许多中国家长头疼
的问题。近年来留学低龄化的趋势愈演愈烈。
Beare女士提到自己也曾经面临类似的问题,但
作为一个母亲,她对太早把孩子送出去有很大的
顾虑,因为亲子关系还没有完全建立,孩子也还
没有达到完全独立的程度。从自己的切身经历出
发,她认为引入中国本土的西方寄宿教育体系完
全可以为家长和孩子提供一个两全其美的选择:
孩子没有必要过早地远渡重洋;平时又可以在众
多驻校老师的指导下,花更多的时间学习、参加
活动或与兴趣相投的伙伴交流,逐步学会独立地
解决问题。由于每天都要为自己大大小小的事情
做决定,寄宿的孩子往往会假设自己的父母面对
同样的事情会怎样做决定,从而了解、珍视父母
曾经教导过的家庭观念和人生价值。
两位嘉宾还回答了家长们比较关心的问题,比如
招生部的工作人员的工作流程是怎样的;如何辨
别充斥留学市场的申请材料包装、甚至作弊的现
象;以及“小常春藤”和常春藤联盟等名校对中
国留学生的录取比率是否有限制等。

Rachael Beare女士在20多年的职业生涯当中,曾
在美国多所顶尖大学预科学校中负责招生和奖/
助学金的颁发。她在加入北京市鼎石学校之前,于
2008-2012年在美国新英格兰地区著名的私立寄
宿学校,八校联盟之一的Hotchkiss任招生办主任一
职。此前,她在西雅图名校Lakeside任招生办主任
长达10年,还在“八校联盟”中的另外两所,即新罕
布什尔州的Phillips Exteter Academy和马萨诸
塞州的Deerfield Academy,以及她的母校康涅狄格
州的Loomis Chaffee负责招生工作。Beare女士同时
还是独立学校招生专业协会(AISAP)的创始董事

What does one mean by success, or being
successful? Is it the same for all children, or even
all parents? Keystone’s third salon led by school
President Dr. Edward Shanahan addressed
some of these issues, and put the discussion
on “success” into perspective. “There are two
doors,” started Dr. Shanahan. If parents chose
the first door, their child would be a bright,
articulate, intellectually curious, socially aware,
capable, ethical, moral, healthy and happy
student. And if parents chose the second door,
then their child would be guaranteed admission
to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford.
“Which door would you choose?” Dr. Shanahan
challenged parents.
In getting parents to view success from
various perspectives, Dr. Shanahan was also
encouraging them to understand success
beyond the realm of academia. Reflecting on
his own 40 years experience as an educator, he
listed the 7 elements of a successful education:
1. Cross-cultural understanding and experience
2. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
PREPARING CHILDREN FOR SUCCESS IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY
and Mathematics) education 3. Independent
research 4. Collaboration 5. Communication
6. Willingness to act and effect change and 7.
Ethical and moral behavior. These, he believes,
are essential to success in the 21st century.
In this highly competitive 21st century,
Keystone’s Dean of Admission Rachael Beare,
added that children need to develop 5 key
qualities: self-awareness, self-confidence,
creativity, collaborative spirit and empathy.
Ms. Beare emphasized the importance of these
qualities to be able to stand out in the admission
pool.
The information age is an era of life-long
learning concluded the speakers. And this
salon provided parents and educators with
the opportunity to learn from each other, and
consider the challenges of preparing children for
success in a globalized world. As Dr. Shanahan
rightly said: “Education helps us walk from
reality into eternity and to better understand the
world and oneself, which is exciting.”

School, a leading day school in Seattle, Washington, where she was
the Director of Admissions & Financial Aid for ten years; Phillips Exeter
Academy in New Hampshire; Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts; and
Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut, her alma mater. Ms. Beare is also

Edward Shanahan has been in secondary and post-secondary education
in New England for over 40 years. From 1972 to 1981, he was Dean of
Students and member of the faculty at Wesleyan University; then he
became Dean of College and member of faculty at Dartmouth College,
from 1981 to 1991, and in the last 20 years till 2011, Dr. Shanahan was
Headmaster of Choate Rosemary Hall. He has also served as Chair of
the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE), and later
as President of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges
(NEASC). He is the Founding President of Keystone Academy, in addition
to being the Executive Director of the Eight Schools Association (ESA),
a consortium of distinguished New England boarding schools, as well
as a Life Trustee of Choate Rosemary Hall. And for the last decade, Dr.
Shanahan has been presiding over the Board of Directors of the Icahn
Foundation for Greater Opportunity.

与到教育理念的探讨中来,一直是鼎石从创校之初
就提出、并坚定奉行的举措。我们希望能够与家
长、教育工作者、孩子,以及一切关心教育的人一
起,共享优质的教育资源,促进对教育的思考与理
解。因此,我们与中国国际金融有限公司(CICC)
联手,为家长和孩子们奉献了一场主题为“为孩子
铺就成功之路”的教育分享会。
每个人对“成功”的定义不同,对孩子的期望更是
各异。鼎石创校主席Edward Shanahan博士的演讲就
从“成功”谈起。他假设有两扇通往不同人生道路
的“门”,邀请现场的家长选择其一:迈过其中的
一扇“门”,孩子将成为聪明、对事物充满好奇、
善于沟通、具有良好社交能力、有创意、有能力和
意愿去从事一项事业、且正直、健康、快乐的大学
生;另外一扇“门”则直接通往哈佛、耶鲁、普林
斯顿、斯坦福等顶尖学府。
这个小调查意在让大家一起关注教育的真正意义所
在。他引用诺贝尔文学奖得主托尼.莫里森在小说
《宠儿》中的一段话,来诠释自己对于好的学校教
育的理解:“她(学校)是我的心灵上的挚友,她
把我之为‘我’的所有特质都收集起来,组装好,
又还给了我。她帮助我成长为一个完整的人。”
为孩子铺就成功之路
作为一名在美国著名私立高中Choate担任校长长达
20年的教育家,也作为一位父亲,他与大家分享
了成功教育的7大要素:1.全球化背景下对不同文
化的理解;2.学好STEM(科学、技术、工程、数
学)这4门课程;3.独立工作;4.与他人合作;5.
沟通能力;6.把想法付诸实践;7.正直,关爱他
人,并回馈社会。并一一解释这些要素在21世纪的
背景之下,为何格外重要。
和曾在美国多所著名私立高中负责招生、现任鼎
石招生主任的Rachael Beare女士从更为直接的角
度——申请学校——对如何辅助孩子成功娓娓道
来:从“八校联盟”、“常春藤联盟”等美国名校
的招生角度来谈名校之所以成为名校,培养的学生
之所以成功,招生上有哪些与众不同之处。家长们
除了重视孩子的学习成绩之外,还需与学校配合,
共同帮助孩子发展5种对于成功而言十分关键的特
质:自制、自信、创造力、合作精神和同理心。

Rachael Beare女士在20多年的职业生涯当中,曾在美国多所顶尖大学预科
学校中负责招生和奖/助学金的颁发。她在加入北京市鼎石学校之前,于
2008-2012年在美国新英格兰地区著名的私立寄宿学校,八校联盟之一的
Hotchkiss任招生办主任一职。此前,她在西雅图名校Lakeside任招生办主
任长达10年,还在“八校联盟”中的另外两所,即新罕布什尔州的Phillips
Exteter Academy和马萨诸塞州的Deerfield Academy,以及她的母校康涅狄
格州的Loomis Chaffee负责招生工作。Beare女士同时还是独立学校招生专

Bilingual immersion is one of three pillars
of Keystone’s academic model. The school’s
Head of Primary School, Mary Jew, and Dr.
Chang Ji-Mei of San Jose State University, USA,
facilitated by Head of School Malcolm McKenzie
unpacked this curricular ethos and revealed the
many benefits it provides.
Ms. Jew underscored the significance of
bilingual education today by quoting a Former
US Secretary of Education, ”we must expose our
children to languages, cultures and challenges
outside our borders. We must teach our
students to understand world issues and their
connections to them.” Keystone’s mission is to
make this a reality. Dr. Chang then explained
the model of bilingual education that is used at
Keystone. It is called ‘contextualized education’.
“The beauty of contextualized education is that

you are learning many things in an integral
manner, the content, the languages and the
culture and vocabulary,” said Dr. Chang. It is
a mode of instruction that is not abstract but
immersed in a student’s daily life and existence.
Students experience transformations as they

The speakers further laid out the life-long
benefits of a bilingual education. It is the road to
being world citizens. This is why Keystone lays
the groundwork for bilingualism from the very
foundation years. Bilingual education enables
students to learn and absorb information in
complex ways thus pushing their cognitive
development further. This means that students
in bilingual education are also superior in
critical thinking. “Cognitive development and
critical thinking are deeply intertwined. Without
proper cognitive skills, students will drown in
the mountains of information at their fingertips
because of the kind of access we have today.
Relevancy and reliability of information is taught
from kindergarten these days this is critical
thinking,” said Dr. Chang.
Mary Jew, Head of Keystone Academy’s Primary School, has over 25
years of experience in education in the California public school system in
Grades K-12. As a distinguished leader in the United States in Bilingual
and Immersion education, she has developed and managed numerous
immersion programs in English and one of the following languages:
Cantonese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Putonghua. Ms. Jew is
a graduate of the University of San Francisco and the University of
California, Santa Barbara. She served most recently the Deputy Principal
of the Primary School and Director of the Immersion Program at the
Independent Schools Foundation Academy in Hong Kong. At Keystone,
she oversees the Primary School and its related language immersion
program.
Professor Ji-Mei Chang is a teacher educator and educational researcher
in the Lurie College of Education at San Jose State University. She has
conducted cross-language research on children’s reading processes
and comprehension in Taiwan with traditional writing system and
Singapore with simplified writing system. She has worked with Chinese-
English bilingual and immersion/dual language program teachers in
Northern California since 1990s on Chinese curriculum unit design,
reading instruction and assessment. She has engaged in professional
development on Chinese curriculum unit design among Chinese
teachers at ISB and Taipei American School since 2004. She is currently
supporting Chinese primary school teachers at CIS on integrated science
unit and Chinese curriculum unit design; she also works with Chinese
middle school teachers on MYP oriented unit design as well as reading
and differentiated instructions since January 2013.

双语教育所带来的前景与机遇,使其成为当今广
受欢迎的语言教育形式。但有意思的是,当大家谈
论双语教育的时候,会发现其实对于“双语教育”
本身,至今也没有一个统一、明确的定义和标准。
而近年来,在全球一体化的过程中,不同文化间的
冲突、对话、坚守、与融合,又使得双语教育中本就
涉及的“双文化”话题,在家长和教育界中都引起
了极大的关注与热议。有鉴于此,近期,曾出任全
美双语教育协会(NABE)主席、现任鼎石小学部校
长周惠卿女士与她的好友、来自圣何塞州立大学
Lurie教育学院的张稚美教授,走进鼎石教育沙龙,
以“介于两个世界之间 ——破除双语教育中的迷
思,以及如何培养双语、双文化的下一代”为题,与
到场的140多名中外家长及教育工作者们分享了她
们在双语、双文化教育领域多年来的理念与实践
心得。
周惠卿女士以教育学、心理学乃至生物学领域在过去
半个世纪以来的研究成果,逐一厘清了关于双语教育
利弊的诸多迷思:“过去三、四十年的实践已经充分

证明,学双语的孩子不仅多掌握了一门技能,而且具
有更灵活、更具创意的思考和认知能力,面对不同的
文化,也更加包容。”
那么,怎样才是“有效的”双语学习呢?周惠卿
女士说:“目前在诸多双语教育模式中,沉浸式
双语教学模式是最成功的,在培养出纯正的双
语能力之外,还使学生懂得欣赏、甚至热爱不同

的文化。”现场她放映了一段视频,展示了在美
国加州的学校中,不同背景的孩子经由沉浸式的
双语教学项目如何兴致勃勃地同时学习母语及
外语。
随后发言的张稚美教授,也以加州小学生同时运用中
英文来学习地理知识为例,说明了沉浸式双语教育
的特点,即:1)透过学科内容学习语言;2)在相关文
化情境中学习语言;3)兼顾学科和认知的平衡;4)
促进认知的发展;5)发展批判性思考的技巧。“孩子
们会问老师‘如果是你,你会怎么说’,因为在相关的
情境中,孩子们的认知到了一定程度、懂得比较之后,
会发现自己词不达意了。”张稚美教授提到这个在沉
浸式教学中常会出现的现象,“在情境化的环境中,
语言不是灌输给孩子的,而是环境提升了孩子们对语
言的要求,也增强了他们在认知上的需求。”
在谈及家长们最关心的如何支持孩子发展双语、双
文化的能力时,张稚美教授坦言:“在双语、双文化
的教育之中,无论是孩子,还是教师、家长,都面临
着不断学习新知识的挑战,所以需要良好的心智习
性才能坚持下来。”她与参与者们分享了加州州立
大学荣誉教授Arthur Costa及私人顾问Bena Kallick
提出的16项心智习性(Habits of Mind),并强调父
母可以通过营造和谐关爱的家庭、打好双语双文化
的地基、以及有意识地促进语言和认知的发展等
方式,为孩子的成长创造一个积极美好的环境。她
还建议:“在孩子上一年级之前,家长最好能够带
领孩子阅读至少1000个小时。但这里的‘阅读’不
仅仅是指阅读书籍,而是包括阅读艺术作品、博物
馆以及周围的世界。”
嘉宾介绍
北京市鼎石学校小学部校长,曾在美国加利福尼亚州公立学校系统内(幼
儿园至高中)工作长达25年,拥有丰富的教学管理经验。作为一名美国沉
浸式双语教学领域的杰出领袖,她曾开发并管理过众多沉浸式双语教学项
目,包括英粤双语、英西双语、英日双语、英韩双语和英汉双语项目等。
周惠卿毕业于旧金山大学和加州大学圣巴巴拉分校。加入北京市鼎石学校
之前,周女士是香港弘立书院小学部副校长及沉浸式教育项目总监。在北
京市鼎石学校,她负责管理小学部和沉浸式双语教学项目。
张稚美教授执教于美国加州圣何塞州立大学的Lurie教育学院。历年来她的
研究项目包括:在台湾繁体字和新加坡简体字两种中文书写环境下,儿童
阅读过程和理解的跨语言研究;自90年代开始,她与加州北部的中英双语
及沉浸式/双语项目教师合作,共同进行中文课程的单元设计、阅读指导
和评估。
近年来,她与亚洲多所学校紧密合作:2004年起,为北京顺义国际学校
(ISB)、台北美国学校提供中文课程单元设计方面的教师职业发展培
训;2011年至今,协助香港汉基国际学校的小学部中文教师进行课程设

A mama, papa and baby bear are trying to
catch fish for their dinner from a stream. The
baby bear, desperate to learn this basic survival
skill, tries but is not successful and gives up.
American 5-year old kids were more tolerant of
the baby bear’s inadequacy and still found it cute
and furry. But their Chinese peers would have
liked the bear if it had persisted instead of giving
up so easily. Dr. Li Jin says that the difference in
response, revealed through academic research,
is an indication of learning beliefs that come
from “parental socialization” and then “joint
socialization of parents and school” that are
all culturally rooted. At the end of Dr. Li’s story,
one person sitting at the back of the room
listening to her presentation at Keystone’s sixth
education salon was not happy with this cultural
distinction. Chinese student, Coco, walked up to
the front of the room and asked an interesting
question, “How can American kids be more
tolerant of the baby bear? And as Chinese
myself, which behavior should I choose?”
A scholar in the field of education and human
development at Brown University, USA, Dr.
Li couldn’t be happier with her questions. She
explained that one cultural approach is not
better than another. It is about developing a
cognitive ability to integrate different cultural
learning approaches and applying them in the

suited to enable integration and inculcate an
understanding of cultural variations in students,
says Dr. Li. “Keystone comes at the right time,”
she encouragingly notes, “with its world-
oriented focus, critical thinking pedagogical
style and inquiry-based learning.”
Dr. Li’s compelling talk was a wake-up call to
the unavoidable significance of understanding
culturally oriented learning beliefs. Her
extensively comparative and impressive research
reveals that a western learning approach
looks for objective truths through inquiry and
scientific discovery because the human mind
is supreme and enjoys such intrinsic inquiry
that will be put to ethical use. Meanwhile, the
eastern way approaches learning as a lifelong
process to learn about the self and continually
improve the self. This approach to learning
enables and legitimizes powerless individuals
and encourages a love for learning. In today’s
world, eastern and western learning cultures
meet through ever moving populations. Cultural
integration is inevitable. In Dr. Li’s words, “It is
quite possible to obtain knowledge and to retain
one’s soul…One can grow both with what has
been enculturated and assimilated in one’s
own culture, and what has been acculturated in
another.” And Keystone’s mission is in tune with
this dynamic and ever changing world.
Dr. Jin Li is Professor of Education and Human
Development at Brown University. She earned
her Ed.M. in education from the University
of Pittsburgh in 1988, her second Ed.M. in
Administrative Planning and Social Policy
in 1991, and her doctoral degree in Human
Development and Psychology from Harvard
Graduate School of Education in 1997. Dr.
Li’s research examines different cultural
learning models and how such models shape
children’s learning beliefs and achievement.
Dr. Li has published in leading journals such as
American Psychologist, Journal of Educational
Psychology, Child Development, Developmental
Psychology, Ethos, and Cognition and Emotion
among others. In 2012, Dr. Li published her
book Cultural Foundations of Learning: East
and West.

有不少家长正在筹划送孩子去国外或国际学校读
书。然而,关于在国外或在以英语为主的国际学校
环境中就读,我们究竟了解多少?第六次鼎石教育
沙龙上,美国常春藤盟校布朗大学教育及人类发
展教授李谨指出,中西方的学习方式存在明显的差
别,它们拥有各自的关注点和文化倾向,如果对此
问题缺乏足够的思想准备,会令“空降”到国外或
国际学校的孩子陷于“文化认同的迷茫”,学习效
果与美好的初衷可能大相径庭。她建议:“应对这
些混淆可能造成的困扰,孩子最好先在鼎石这样的
融合中国和国际教育精粹的学校接受教育,建立
起文化认同再出国。”
李谨教授是在美国首位关注移民儿童学习模式和
学习效果的学者。近20年来,她追踪研究中国大陆
和台湾的儿童、美国的华裔和欧裔的儿童及其家
长,并和台湾、香港、英国、德国和以色列等各地学
者开展合作。
她的团队调查发现,关于学习,华人人群常常带有
强烈的情绪,愿望强烈且精神执着,相比之下,西
方人群对学习的看法就中性很多。”我们访问的美
国常青藤大学学生(非华裔学生),500个核心词
汇里,没有一个是hard work(努力学习),这让我
很吃惊!”李谨说。相应的,如果成绩出现波动,中
建立起文化认同再出国
西方人群也呈现出截然不同的情绪反应。如果成
绩上升,华人人群会表现得谦虚很多,如果成绩下
降,感到惭愧的华人人数会比西方人高出35个百
分点。
“西方的学习方式是心智取向,强调思维、探索、
智力、发现、好奇、挑战、创造性、开放态度、快速
学习、口头交流等等;而中国的学习方式是道德取
向,突出认真、勤奋、刻苦、毅力、专心、谦虚、和道
德发展。”李谨教授总结说。
两种学习模式差别明显,孩子到底跟从哪一种学
习模式会更适应社会发展、更具竞争力呢?这是沙

龙现场家长们非常关心的问题。李教授分享道,学
习模式诸多不同的背后,是长达上千年的中西方文
化差异,不能简单判断哪一种学习模式更好,并且
大量实例表明,向孩子武断地论断某种学习方式
乃至其背后的文化,将造成其身份认同困惑,甚至
导致其在成长过程中遭遇种种挫败。“应该教导孩
子,以开放的心态和批判的思维面对两者,而不是
简单地告诉孩子,哪一种学习模式更好或是更加
不好……不过,我们要首先坚持中华传统文化的
精粹。”
“鼎石来的正是时候。”在李谨看来,类似鼎石这
样的教育弥补了小留学生遭遇文化缺失的风险,孩
子可以在鼎石这样的学校接受既具有国际视野,
又强调中国丰富而深厚的文化传统的世界教育,
从而避免了孩子与中国文化产生割裂,因为他们还
是在中国生活,也没有脱离家长的呵护。等他们完
成中学甚至大学学业,建立起清晰的文化认同,树
立起学习的信念后,再去国外学习,成功的可能性
更大。
