In Norfolk, Virginia, the Harbor Park waterfront faces many issues of soil and water contamination, high levels of flooding, dilapidation and disrepair, and overall disuse alongside the mainly vacant downtown and waterfront area. From these issues, I decided to focus restoring the waterfront by embracing the high levels in sea elevation by creating a berm along the edges of the roads and stadium of about fourteen feet in height. This will prevent flooding from the street access and encourage flooding in the newly restored water front. The water front area will be restored and created into wetlands to help clean the Elizabeth River water. Throughout the site there are pathways that link the topography of site to the berm and the different education points along the paths. The pavilions along the pathway lead to the main Sustainability Education Center which will be the office space for the Elizabeth River Project. The Education Center is located along the pathway made of steel and glass cantilevering in different directions along the site. This extruding building provide different views for the site and creates a continuity along the entire site mimicking the pathways.

In Brooklyn, New York there is a rapid development in the performing arts industry. With the Brooklyn Academy of Music and many dance academies, it is essential to continue this growth to provide space for these performing art industries. I decided to design the space for a concert hall since there was a need for a variety of performing arts spacing within the city. For my concert hall, I wanted to create the relationship between the interior and exterior of the building. Many performing art structures are very enclosed spaces but I wanted people to have that relationship by having this transparent glass building with perforated auditorium walls for the symphony area. This allows for the admiration of music and the performing arts to be viewed from both the inside and outside of the building. This creates a unique relationship emphasizing the importance of music within Brooklyn and demonstrating a transparent relationship with the building and the performances.

Casco Viejo, a historic area of Panama City, is defined by its connection to the water and role as a part. Founded in 1671 and rebuilt after its destruction by pirate attacks, Casco Viejo still holds many original 16th-17th century structures. Most importantly, it holds the location of the historic Gate of Water. Although it is the location of the Gate of Water, it lacks a monumental marker that can define the district’s role and importance as a port and connection between the people of Panama City and the water. The proposed project is a series of moveable platforms that is situated on the water to create a pathway across the water. Rather than having the water as the background of the city, we propose to change the relationship to show the importance between the people and the water. In addition to increase the interaction with the water, we propose a series of swimming pools with a surrounding commercial area to generate the original purpose of the Gate which was for trade and commerce. Our proposal will create an immediate connection with the surrounding water allowing the people to appreciate the history and establishment of the Gate of Water.

For the Parametric Structural Design project, we were tasked with creating a unique design and structure based from a list of precedents. We studied the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland to analyze the different components and make a structurally difficult building with multiple levels that tests the loads and deflections. From the Rolex Center, we concentration on different aspects of the building including the grid pattern of the columns, the cantilevered spaces, the curvature of the building touching the ground, the subtraction of portions in the building, and the connection through ramps. Through the analysis of this precedent, we focused on methods to create this continuous form of circulation. To create this vertical flow, we decided to investigate the structure supported by ramps and the relationship of the ramps with the spatiality of each floor. By creating a grid of columns we were able to design a continuous ramp formation made out of concrete that followed the design principles of the Rolex Learning Center with low deflections in relation to the loads.

The 2015 Virginia Architecture Student Competition focused on wind driven devices since there are currently no wind farms in Virginia. The competition called for a wind farm design as a public work of land art. The building had to be a museum or education center about wind farms holding programming such as a wind turbine on display, an observation center that offers panoramic views, and an interpretative center for other artifacts exhibition. For my project, I focused on designing a building that would emphasize the motion of the wind and play this harmonic view throughout the building. I designed the building to be operable with the wind where the reflective panels would swing and move as the wind blows on it. This allows for the connection between the wind and the people. It allows people to see the breath of fresh air and demonstrates the significance role that wind plays in Virginia.
