ABIA STATE
IWA CONVENTION 2011
Abia State was carved out of the former Imo State in 1991. The name "Abia" is an abbreviation of four of the state's densely populated regions Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo. It is one of the thirty-six (36) States that constitute the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Abia people are of the Igbo ethnic group who predominates much of the Southeast-ern part of Nigeria. Their traditional language is Igbo, Eng-lish is widely spoken and serves as the official language in governance and business. Globally, Igbos are well travelled. Abia's 2.4mm people are mainly christians. They are entre-preneurial, known and reputed to be industrious, highly market oriented, very hospitable and accommodating, probably due to their migratory nature. ANAMBRA STATE
Anambra is a state in south-eastern Nigeria. Its name is
an anglicized version of the original 'Oma Mbala', the name
of the river now known as Anambra which the state is
named after. The Capital and the Seat of Government
is Awka, Onitcha and Nnewi are the biggest commercial and
industrial cities, respectively. The state's theme is "Light Of
The Nation". Boundaries are formed by Delta State to the
west, Imo State and Rivers State to the south, Enugu State to
the east and Kogi State to the north. The origin of the name
is derived from the Anambra River (Omambala) which is a
tributary of the famous River Niger.

The Need for Synergy, Deliberation, and Collaboration among Ndi Igbo: The IWA Factor
The Igbo World Assembly (IWA) has become the umbrellas Igbo association that gives Igbo people the kind of worldwide institu-tional presence that is much needed by all hometown associa-tions in the Igbo Diaspora. IWA’s motto emphasizes the princi-ples of njiko na Igba izu (synergy and deliberation). In the past four years IWA, in the spirit of synergy and deliberation, has provided several contexts in Alaigbo and abroad for the leaders of Igbo associations in Nigeria and the greater Igbo Diaspora to engage in serious talks, advocacies, and interventions in matters affecting Ndi Igbo. This has been the case, since the conflict that tore apart the World Igbo Congress began. And we have watched the crack in the wall of the World Igbo Congress grow into a big hole. Michael J. Behe, whose writing I admire, said something in his book, Darwin’s Black Box, which reminds me of what is going in WIC today. Behe said, “A house with a crack in the wall would never sell”. When I think of the implication of this poign-ant statement to the house we call WIC, I get profoundly dis-tressed. But then, I look around and see IWA working in collaboration with the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo. From time to time, I see IWA in the Nigerian national arena. Very often I hear IWA leaders discuss-ing with governors in the Igbo speaking states on behalf of the Igbo Farm Village in Staunton, Virginia. When I sit and think about these things, I cannot help but see the IWA factor as very crucial. It seems to me that IWA is perhaps the only hope we have to restore the spirit of Njikoka na Igba Izu. Indeed, IWA does for us what no other Igbo Association is doing at the moment. Let’s rally around IWA to strengthen the syn-ergy, deliberation, and collaboration that it (IWA) has made pos-sible. Biko nu. Ticha Akuma
