RAID SUSE Linux version 9.3 (2.6. kernel) supports ICH7R option ROM software RAID with dmraid.
Note Because GRUB does not boot and dmraid is alpha software, we advise not to use dmraid. • If you use dmraid, you will do it on your own risk. • We advise you to disable RAID in BIOS setup (Advanced - SATA/PATA Configuration -
RAID support) and use linux software RAID instead.

2.3 Installation Sound Adapter
Note The information in this section is not given for support services but only "as is" for convenience purposes and does not constitute or substitute support services. Such services are not provided by Siemens.
Introduction After installing Novell SUSE Linux version 9.3 the sound adapter does not work. This article describes how to install the sound adapter. All Informations used in this article were obtained from the alsa project (www.alsa-project.org).
Notice Do not configure the sound adapter with Yast, because disc image programs would not work properly.
Yast->Software->Install and Remove Software • Install the gnu C compiler (gcc) toolchain. • Install the ncurses-devel package.
Download following alsa files The installation was done with alsa version 1.0.11rc5. • alsa-driver-xxx.tar.bz2 • alsa-lib-xxx.tar.bz2 • alsa-utils-xxx.tar.bz2

Install and Compile the alsa sources In a shell type these commands: 1. Make a directory to store the alsa source code in. cd /usr/src mkdir alsa cd alsa cp /downloads/alsa-* . 2. Now unzip and install the alsa-driver package bunzip2 alsa-driver-xxx tar -xf alsa-driver-xxx cd alsa-driver-xxx ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-sequencer=yes make make install 3. You should chmod a+rw /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi 4. Now unzip and install the alsa-lib package cd .. bunzip2 alsa-lib-xxx tar -xf alsa-lib-xxx cd alsa-lib-xxx ./configure make make install 5. Now unzip and install the alsa-utils package cd .. bunzip2 alsa-utils-xxx tar -xf alsa-utils-xxx cd alsa-utils-xxx ./configure make make install

6. Now insert the modules into the kernel. modprobe snd-hda-intel modprobe snd-pcm-oss modprobe snd-mixer-oss modprobe snd-seq-oss All mixer channels are muted by default. You must use a native mixer program to unmute appropriate channels, for example alsamixer from the alsa-utils package. Note that some usb-audio devices do not have internal mixer controls. alsamixer 7. Edit /etc/modprobe.conf.local. # ALSA portion alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel # module options should go here # OSS/Free portion alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 # card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss 8. Delete all text in /etc/modprobe.d/sound. New filesize is 0 bytes. 9. Testing the sound adapter • System sounds should be active now. • The sound volume can be controlled by KMix. Because of copyright reasons Novell SUSE Linux version 9.3 is shipped without mp3 decoders. That means programs like amaroK will not play any mp3-files. To play mp3-files please use RealPlayer 10, which is shipped with an own mp3-codec.

2.4 Formatting the Hard Disk
Note The information in this section is not given for support services but only "as is" for convenience purposes and does not constitute or substitute support services. Such services are not provided by Siemens.
This article describes how to customize the hard disk for later use with the SIMATIC PC/PG Image Creator V1.2 CD. Restoring a LINUX image will be done in following steps: • Create the boot disk. • Customize the hard disk.
Create the boot disk Customizing is done with a FREEDOS boot disk, which can be created with FREEDOS_BOOT_FLOPPY_WITH_PARTEDIT.exe.
Customizing the hard disk Before we restore the LINUX image we have to prepare the hard disk on which the image will be restored. Please make sure that there is only one hard disk in your PC.
Caution All data on the hard disk will get lost.
1. Boot with the FREEDOS boot disk. • Run FDISK (with LBA support enabled); • Clean hard disk (delete all partitions); • Create a DOS primary partition 1000 MB; • Create a DOS primary partition 10000 MB; • Set partition 2 (10000 MB) active; • Create an extended partition (all available disk space); • Create a logical partition (all available disk space).
Report on Test Installation 2.4 Formatting the Hard Disk
SIMATIC Rack PC IL 43 "Suited for Linux" Manufacturer's Declaration, 07/2006, A5E00841404-01 2-11
2. Reboot with FREEDOS boot disk. • Run PARTEDIT; • Change 1000MB partition type to type 0x82 (Linux swap); • Change 10000MB partition type to type 0x83 (Linux ext2fs). 3. Reboot with the FREEDOS boot disk. • Run FORMAT C: • Run FDISK /MBR 4. Finished, now you can do the LINUX installing.
