FINAL REPORT
ON THE "SUCCESSFUL GRAIN AGRIBUSINESS
ON A SMALL AREA" PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
The project is being implemented in Ukraine by the European Bank for Reconstruction and
Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The contractor is Sumy
National Agrarian University.
Specialized one-year modular training program "Successful Grain Agribusiness in a Small Area"
was designed for managers, engineers, agronomists and farm land owners with an area up to 5 hectares.
The program consists of six training modules: three modules for agronomists, one - for managers,
engineers and machine operators, and one more training module - a field visit to the most successful
farms of the region.
The first module "Soil and Sowing" was held on February 27-28, 2014 in Sumy on the basis of
Sumy National Agrarian University. The event was attended by 40 participants, for whom there were 16
speakers and 7 representatives of the professional practitioners invited. The average size of the land
plots is 2858,2 ha. Current law, land and market issues in parallel with technological ones were
reviewed. According to the feedback from participants, they appreciated the fact that for the first time
the attention was paid to such an important element of the grain business as farms with an area up to 5
hectares, while usually the trainings of such kind are aimed at big enterprises.

The second module of the program “Management on a Small Grain Farm” was held on
May 22-23, 2014. 33 participants attended it, moreover 9 participants re-attended the program after the
previous module. 73 participants took course following two training modules. The average size of
households’ area is 2392 hectares. 14 speakers were invited to provide an informative part of the
seminar, those included: candidates and doctors of sciences of Sumy NAU and practicians of leading
companies and international organizations working in the relevant fields.

The third module of the program “Successful Experience - Study Tour” was held on August
20-21, 2014. 32 participants attended it. 105 participants in whole took part in all the three training
modules. 4 previous modules participants attended the third one, this fact can be explained by
geographical relocation of the project basis. The average size of households’ area is 1843 hectares.
Visits to leading enterprises of Hlukhiv and Krolevets regions were organized for providing
informative and practical unit. The detailed event program is attached. In particular, were visited the
following objects:
- LLC «Veleten». Representatives of "Jupiter 9 Ahroservis" (official dealers of «John Deere» in
Ukraine) were involved for communication with participants.
Brief information of the enterprise: The total land area of "Veleten" is 7068 ha, agricultural land
area - 6130 hectares (arable land). Specialization: Plant cultivation - growing of cereals and industrial
crops, animal husbandry. Providing services in plant cultivation and animal husbandry production;
landscape development. An agricultural raw materials and live animals wholesale. The main crops
grown on the farm are: winter wheat (yield 63.5 ce / ha), maize (yield of 123 ce / ha), sunflower (yield
23 ce / ha), winter rape (yield 41 ce / ha ), oats (yield - 41 ce / ha). The share of called capital is 0%.

- LLC «Shalygynske» «ROSTOK-HOLDING» group.
Brief information of the enterprise: The agricultural land area - 4837 hectares. Specialization:
Plant cultivation - growing of cereals and technical crops. Animal husbandry. Providing services in plant
cultivation and animal husbandry production; landscape development. Meat production. Bread and
bakery products. The main crops grown on the farm are: winter wheat (yield - 65 ce / ha), corn (yield -
111 kg / ce), soy (yield - 30 ce / ha).
A visit to the elevator complex and functioning infrastructure peculiarities was organized as a
part of the project agenda. The complex is a hi-tech object, where the world's leading equipment is
represented. There was a review of soybean and corn crops (elite seeds from such leading companies as:
"Syngenta", "Monsanto", "DuPont Pioneer", etc..), successful experience of precise farming application
systems was explored in the enterprise.
- LLC «Кrolevetskii animal feed mill»
Brief information of the enterprise: Specialization - plant cultivation. The total land area - 3500
hа. The main crops grown in the enterprise are winter wheat (yield 70 ce/ ha), maize (yield of 103 ce /
ha), sunflower (yield 34 ce/ha), winter rape (yield 35 ce/ha).
A visit was organized to a demonstrational field "Adaptive Qualities of Modern Maize Hybrids
Referring to a Northern Forest-Steppe of Sumy Region", and accompanied by the presentation of the
experimental results. About 100 corn hybrids from leading international breeding and seed companies
are grown on the experimental field ("Pioner Nasinnya Ukraini", "Monsanto", "Мaisadour", "Маis",
"Saatbau" etc). Representatives of the majority of companies were present during the visit and ready for
the open dialogue with the participants of the program.

The forth module of the program "Harvesting, Storage and Grain Quality" was held on
October 8-9, 2014. 33 participants attended it. 138 participants in whole took part in all the four training
modules. 22 previous modules participants attended the forth one. The average size of farms’ area is
1810 hectares.
Within the informational-practical session the participants visited the leading enterprises of the
Sumy and Lebedyn regions. The study visit was organized to the demonstrational testing area of the
LLC “Vorozhbalatinvest” "Adaptive Qualities of Modern Maize Hybrids Referring to a Northern
Forest-Steppe of Sumy Region". It was established by the scientists of the SNAU Agricultural
Technologies Faculty together with specialists of the LLC and representatives of the leading crop-
breeding companies. At the testing area the participants had the opportunity to watch the harvesting
process. The representatives of the world well-known corn hybrids producers promoted their innovative
product lines: Pioneer, Monsanto, Limagrain, Saatbau, Maisadour, Dow Seeds. During the practical part
the participants could watch the peculiarities of corn harvesting under modern conditions and defining of
its moisture content and crop capacity.
A study visit to the grain elevator of the Pidlisnivska affiliate of the PLC “Rais-Maksymko” was
organized. The participants had a unique opportunity to get acknowledged with technical aspects of a
modern elevator functioning starting from the grain delivery to the elevator territory until the storage
tanks visits.
The second day of the module was dedicated to informational sessions delivered by the leading
scientists and practitioners of the agrarian business.

The fifth module of the program “Mechanization of Agricultural Production” was held on
February, 5-7, 2015 on the basis of Lviv National Agrarian University (city of Dubliany, Lviv region).
30 participants attended it. 168 participants in whole took part in all the five training modules. 18
previous modules participants attended the fifth one. Food and transportation expenses for participants
were covered by the project costs. The average size of households’ area is 1681 hectares.
Within the informational-practical session a study visit to LLC “AGRO LV LIMITED” was
organized, as well as a visit to LLC “Market of Agricultural products “Shuvar”.

Absolutely all the participants noted the usefulness of large-scale projects of such a kind and
identified the following topics of projects that would make them interested in the future:
- Growing buckwheat, increasing its yields,
- Agribusiness in modern conditions,
- Development of livestock dairy farms,
- Agrochemicals,
- Accurate Agriculture,
- Work fleet,
- Optimization of work of big motor services,
- Optimization of agricultural equipment per concrete land plot.
The sixth program module “Agrochemistry” was held on February, 19-20, 2015 on the basis
of Sumy National Agrarian University. 52 participants attended it. 220 participants in whole took part in
all the five training modules. 100% of previous modules participants attended the last one. Food and
handout materials expenses for participants were covered by the project costs.

The major share of registered participants included farm managers, their deputies, engineers and
agronomists. The interest of regional government bodies of agricultural direction representatives and
state enterprises should be also noted. Thus, according to the positions the participants occupy, the
structure has seriously changed:
- top management (heads and their deputies) - 35 %,
- specialists (engineers, agronomists) - 52 %,
- state authorities, scientific-research and associations representatives – 17 %.
If to consider the registration list from the point of organizational and legal forms, the major
target group consisted of the following representative forms:
o farming households (43%),
o limited liability companies and private enterprises (40%),
o state farms (2%),
o regional state authorities (15%).
Most of their specializations are focused on growing cereals, technical cultures and legumes.
Specialization of some of them includes agricultural services, seeds and research works over different
crops kinds. The average size of households’ area is 1546 hectares.
As for the gender structure of the participants: there were 47 men (90%) and 5 women (10%).
In order to provide the high quality of the informational-practical session the scientists and
practitioners, as well as the relevant state services representatives were invited: Sumy affiliate of the
State Department “StateSoilProtection”, State Environmental Inspectorate in Sumy region, Institute of
Agriculture Northeast of NAAS of Ukraine, State Phytosanitary Inspection of Sumy region.
In the result of trainings conduction a knowledge evaluation was held and the participants
received certificates upon successful module completion. The analysis of the evaluation forms showed
the following results:

Apparently 98% of the participants were able to answer 50% of questions or more what means a
high level of assimilation of the proposed material. 27 people have learned more than 70% of the
material, taking that the absolute mastery of the material is optional and participants had only to improve
the quality of training, it is a high indicator.
Upon completion of the module, organizers conducted a feedback survey on the success of the
module agenda. Analysis of the questionnaire feedback showed the following results for assessing the
quality of the event and the content of the module:

Thus, 100% of participants are very satisfied with the seminars duration, while the preparatory
activities level (as an invitation and prior information delivery) got an average score of 4,6, premises
quality - 4,4. 4,67 got the active cooperation opportunity created for the participants and 4,72 – rational
timing between lectures, discussions and breaks between work sessions.
Module content quality satisfied the majority of the participants while the average score is
between 4,22 and 4,67: the delivered information was up-to-date in terms of the agrarian business
problems and it enriched the professional knowledge of the participants.
The participants are satisfied with the quality and quantity of the handouts, while the level of
materials being applicable to their enterprises conditions was evaluated as 4,22 points, what is quite a
high indicator. 100% participants defined the general event mark positively.

Absolutely all the participants noted the usefulness of large-scale projects of such a kind and
identified the following topics of projects that would make them interested in the future:
- Agrochemicals (economic efficiency of fertilizers, micro and trace elements)
- Vegetables growing,
- Reclamation,
- Technology of late crops cultivation,
- Implementation of the Law of Ukraine "On plants rotation"
- pedology
- Experience of the successful farms,
- Cultivation of soybeans and corn,
- Gardening,
- Varietal technologies.
In general, on returns of the project implementation, it may be considered as a successful one and
the topic of it a relevant one to the target audience needs. Analysis of the participants’ questionnaire
feedback, the project continuation is necessary and desirable for the target group.
Mass Media Coverage
Throughout the project duration relevant press announcements and press releases were placed at
the official SNAU website. A specialized web-page was also designed:

each module of the project. Upon completion of the module, all participants received to their mailboxes
a link to experts’ materials as well as to the photo materials, which were uploaded to the open file

SNAU made an order to Sumy Broadcasting Company "Vidikon" to create a raw of video
products: a promotional video that is currently available on a specialized page of the official SNAU
website and a number of news which were live broadcasted to the entire territory of Sumy region (100 %
