MYTHS&FACTS
MYTH: The 2006 EPA and 2006 EU (European Union) legislations maketwo-strokes illegal.
FACT: The legislations enacted by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as wellas EU Recreational Craft Directive REGULATE EMISSIONS AND NOTTECHNOLOGIES. There is nothing in the EPA, CARB nor the EU outboardemissions legislation that ban the use of any outboard motor onany waterway.
MYTH: The U.S. EPA legislation makes the sale and use of two-strokeoutboards illegal after 2006.
FACT: Outboard manufacturers are required to comply with U.S.EPA legislation through a corporate average. Any combination oftechnologies may be manufactured and sold, provided the corporateaverage is met. Any existing outboard model and its related technologysold to the end-user prior to the effective date can be used beyond 2006under both EPA and EU legislations.
No outboard brand or technology is outlawed by the EPA and EUlegislations.
MYTH: Four-stroke outboards achieve the best fuel economy.
FACT: Both four stroke and Direct Injection two-stroke technologies achievehigh levels of fuel economy. In fact, recent magazine tests have shownthat certain direct injection outboards actually achieve higher levels offuel economy and efficiency than the same horsepower four-stroke model!
MYTH: Four-stroke outboards are the cleanest available.
FACT: Four-stroke and Direct Injection outboards are both significantlycleaner than traditional carbureted outboards. Four-stroke models tend tohave a slight advantage in the hydrocarbons (HC) category, while directinjection models tend to have an advantage in the carbon monoxide (CO)and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) categories.
Both technologies comply with U.S. EPA 2006, EU 2006 and CARB2-STAR and 3 Star ratings, depending on the model.
MYTH: The CARB Star ratings apply worldwide.
FACT: The CARB Star rating applies only to outboards sold inthe state of California and has nothing to do with the EPA orEU 2006/2005 Recreational Craft Directive.

FACT: There are CARB 3 Star certified Direct Injection outboards beingsold today, including the EvinrudeE-TEC engines availablefrom 25-250 HP.
MYTH: Four-stroke outboards are the lowest maintenance
outboards.FACT: Todays four-stroke and Direct Injection outboards are bothlow maintenance products compared to what was available in theindustry ten or more years ago. However, unlike todays four-strokeoutboards, Evinrude E-TEC outboards have no valves to adjust, nocrankcase oil that needs to be changed, no timing belts or chainsthat require adjustment or replacement. This equates to more timeon the water for the customer, which helps to reduce operationalcosts over the engines life.
MYTH: Four-stroke technology makes more torque than otheroutboard technologies.
FACT: While some four-stroke outboards perform at acceptablelevels, when comparing equal displacement engines, four-strokesdevelop significantly LESS torque at the same RPM than competitive
Direct Injection two-stroke technologies. This is due to the inherentnature of the technology. A four-stroke makes a power stroke everyother revolution of the crankshaft while two-stroke and DirectInjection technologies make twice as many power strokes.
MYTH: Four-stroke outboards do not consume engine oil.
FACT: According to Southwest Research Institute, a government-approved emissions testing lab, a competitors 115 HP four-strokeoutboard engine consumed 4.9 quarts of oil in 100 hours of testing.The oil capacity of the engine is only 4.8 quarts.
MYTH: Two-stroke outboards expel oil directly into theenvironment.
FACT: The oil in a Direct Injection outboard is combusted in the
cylinder the same way the fuel is and is accounted for already inits emission rating, while four-strokes need to dispose of the usedoil in the crankcase at the time of service.

LIGHTNING GEARCASEDurability and overall performance. The new lightning gearcase deliversboth. A 1.71:1 (.58) gear ratio is standard on all Evinrude E-TEC 250H.O. and 225 H.O. models. A ratio that not only reduces gear loadingfor improve long-term durability and reliability, it also allows for higherengine mounting height and faster top speedson performance applications. In addition,these new gears are made of a high grade,9310, vacuum arch re-melt (VAR)material, ensuring consistent qualityand superior strength throughout the
entire gear. Perfectly matched to ourlatest line of Raker II, Cyclone andRebel propellers, the 1:71:1 Lightninggearcase offers reliable performanceno matter what the conditions.
TILLER HANDLESTwo unique tiller handles are offered for the 2009 season. First, thetiller with micro-vertical adjustability and 3-position lateral adjustment,allowing user comfort in all applications. Push button/ key starting alongwith throttle trim and tilt are conveniently located to provide totalcontrol and user convenience. And a large, forward mounted gearshiftreduces fatigue normally associated with tiller applications and a longerlength handle provides more leverage for higher hp applications available as standard equipment on 40-60-hp models and will fit anymodel from 40-115-hp.
The second tiller is a new addition to the line-up and is available on the25-hp and 30-hp models. This tiller design provides thumb controlledtrim and tilt at the end of the twist grip, forward positioned shift handle,conveniently located electronic troll speed and resume control so youcan always stay on the fish. With three vertical (0-30-90) and threehorizontal positions, this tiller handle provides comfortable all dayfishing in any boat. Add convenient push button starting and this
