Diesel Generator:
A diesel generator is comprised of a diesel engine which is connected with an electric generator to produce
electricity. The generator works on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction principle which says that electric
charges are induced by moving an electrical conductor in a magnetic field. The movement of electrical conductor
creates a power difference between the two ends of conductor, which results in the flow of charge, thereby
generating electric current. The fuel is consumed to power the movement of engine which rotates electrical
conductor and it leads to the production of electricity, which is connected to the load by conducting cables.
Diesel gensets are majorly used at power consumption centers as standby source of power, and is also used as
power source to shave peak demand and prime power. The use of diesel gensets as prime power source and for
peak shaving is limited but these are predominantly used as standby power source on account of their high level
of reliability.
When electricity supply is cut off, requirement of power at the load centers can be met by standby sources of
electricity, which include solar power, wind energy, diesel gensets, etc. The solar and wind source of power are
intermittent, and hence are not reliable source of electricity. Diesel gensets are capable of providing hassle-free
supply of electricity to the load and ensure that electrical equipment are operating continuously.

Diesel gensets can be very useful when the demand of electricity is high during the peak hours. The power is
instantaneously generated from diesel gensets, which is used to shave peak demand and meet increased
electricity demand.
Diesel gensets find applications as a prime source of power in remote locations where there is no access to grid
for electricity supply. Diesel gensets provide uninterrupted electricity supply in such regions which include
locations where mining or quarrying, oil and gas operations are conducted and access to electricity grid is limited
or unavailable in the concerned locations.
The main components of an electric generator can be broadly classified as follows:
Engine
Alternator
Fuel System
Power Regulator
Cooling and Exhaust Systems
Lubrication System
Battery Charger
Control Panel
Main Assembly / Frame

In the beginning, a brief study of diesel gensets across the world was made which included analysis of
information such as types of diesel gensets, development of technology, initiatives of governments which effect
the market of diesel gensets.
Moreover, detailed and in-depth scrutiny of information was done to understand each and every policy or external
or internal factor that could effect the market of diesel gensets . For this various documents related to energy
sector were studied, followed by a detailed assessment of use of diesel gensets as a source of power supply.
Finally, region and country specific market for diesel gensets was analysed and major companies which provide
diesel gensets were identified. The market for diesel gensets is in expanding phase and the driving factors for
market growth were assessed to make future forecasting.
The study has been carried out considering various aspects of global diesel gensets market:

Diesel Gensets Market to Grow at CAGR 7.4% till 2021
Continuing increase in global electricity demand in industrial and commercial sectors to boost diesel gensets marketthrough 2021
According to a recently published TechSci Research report “Global Diesel Gensets Market By Type, By End User,Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 – 2021”, the global diesel gensets market is projected to grow at aCAGR of 7.4% by the end of 2021. Diesel gensets are being increasingly used for meeting power requirements fromvarious end users across industrial, commercial and residential sectors. Broadly, diesel genset finds application asstandby power system when prime source of power is unable to meet electricity requirements. Diesel gensets arealso used as prime power source as well as for peak shaving purpose. Growing demand for continuous and reliablepower supply from various end user sectors such as healthcare facilities, pharmaceutical industries, manufacturingfacilities, transportation & communication systems, datacenters, fueling stations, water & sewage facilities, etc., isboosting use of diesel gensets across the world, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming years.
Demand for electricity is anticipated to grow over the next five years due to rising industrial production, expansionof commercial sector and increasing power consumption in households, globally. Mounting electricity demandamong diverse end users is augmenting demand for diesel gensets, especially in major developing countries suchas China and India.
“Government’s initiatives to expand industrial sector in major developing economies such as China, India, etc., isexpected to continue propelling demand for diesel gensets over the next five years. Middle East & Africa regionalso offers huge scope for diesel gensets applications due to inadequate power infrastructure in the region.Widening demand-supply gap in the African nations such as Tanzania, Nigeria, etc., has resulted in increased use ofdiesel gensets as a prime source of power. During 2016 – 2021, developing countries with inadequate powerinfrastructure are expected to be the major demand generators for diesel gensets.” said Mr. Karan Chechi,Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based global energy management consulting firm.
