Resolving Physical Contradictions
Definition
A Physical Contradiction is two justified opposite requirements
placed upon a single physical parameter of an object
© 2012-2016 GEN3 Partners, Inc. , Sergei Ikovenko, [email protected], [email protected]
Resolving Physical Contradictions
A physical contradiction is a situation in which an engineering
system demands contradictory values from the same parameter
To improve the quality of nail
penetration, the hammer should be
made heavy
BUT
To improve its handling it should be
made light

avoid damage to the clothes.

Resolving Physical Contradictions
Separating Contradictory Demands
Four methods of Separation
• Separation in Space
• Separation in Time
• Separation in Relation
• Separation in System Level
Separation removes the contradiction
and enables each demand to be met

Resolving Physical Contradictions
Inventive Principles Recommended for Resolving the Physical
Contradiction using ‘Separation in Time’:

Principle 10 — Preliminary action
Principle 11 — In-advance “cushioning”
Principle 15 — Dynamics
Principle 34 — Discarding and recovering

Trimming Problem Solving: Resolving a Physical Contradiction
Engineering Contradiction:
If we do not have a lid, the switch will be simpler and cheaper, but
the components will fall off
Recomended Inventive Principles:
Segmentation – divide the case into parts
Nested Doll – make one part slide into another
Transition to another direction
Innovation Solution:
Two identical case parts ― the mechanism will be easily installed
into the one part, and after that fixed with the second part

TRIZ for Entrepreneurship
The World Economic Forum that took place December 20-23,
2015 in Davos, Switzerland specified top 4 skills, necessary for
entrepreneurial success in 2020:
1. Complex problem solving – a person must understand the root cause and to
address the root cause rather than a symptom;
2. Critical thinking – a method of thinking in which a person questions all
incoming information and even their own convictions;
3. Creativity – in a broad meaning, an ability to see something which doesn’t
exist yet;
4. Cognitive load management – in a world rich with information streams,
formats and devices, the ability to discriminate and prioritize, to filter out
what is most important.

Leonardo’s Dilemma
When great Leonardo da Vinci was working on
the portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, he encountered a
dilemma. Senora Gallerani was notorious for her
irritable and mean character. But Leonardo could
not convey this idea directly for it could anger her
lover, Duke Ludovico Sforca. What was expected
of Leonardo was just a portrait of a beautiful
woman. What to do? How to convey the true
character of Senora Gallerani?
There was a physical contradiction:
The portrait should illustrate real character of the
person to reflect the truth, but it should not do it
to avoid problems with the client.
Leonardo portrays Cecilia with an ermine in her
arms. He symmetrically coordinates the position
of Cecilia’s head with the ermine’s.
Tamed ermines were in fashion then, but
everyone was well aware of how nasty and
treacherous those little beasts were.

Lidice Memorial
Lidice is a village in the Czech Republic just northwest
of Prague. It is built near the site of the previous village of the
same name which on orders from Adolf Hitler was completely
destroyed by German forces in reprisal for the assassination
of Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich in the late spring of
1942. All adult men were killed, women were deported to
concentration camps and children were taken from their
mothers and either gassed at the extermination camps or
were sent to Germany.
The creators of the Lidice Memorial were supposed to show
a mother lost her children.
There was a contradiction:
Children should be present to inform viewers that there had
been children, but they should not be present to inform
viewers that they were killed.
The solutions was the following : the mother is holding a baby
and the hand of her child. But there are no children - just their
imprints on the mother’s body.
