Plate TypesWe have a range of high performance TLC (HPTLC) plates as well as anextensive offering of standard analytical and preparative TLC plates.

Adsorbent Layers/MatricesOur glass, aluminum foil and PET (polyester) TLC plates are available coatedwith a variety of matrices and are available with and without fluorescentindicator.Available matrices include:
• Silica gel (unmodified, modified/bonded, chiral and high purity) – mostcommon TLC sorbent. Eluents used are similar to those used for normalphase HPLC. Does not have the catalytic properties of alumina.
• Aluminum oxide – exhibits selectivity similar to, although slightly differentthan, silica. Second most common TLC sorbent.
• Cellulose – available as either microcrystalline or fibrous cellulose. Spotsare generally more compact when separated on layers of microcrystallinecellulose than when separated on layers of fibrous cellulose.
• Polyamide – exhibits low diffusivity, allowing for tightly confined samplespots with maximum intensity. Corrosive visualization reagents are notrecommended.
BindersPlates are available with polymeric (organic) and inorganic binders as well aswithout binders. Binders do not generally impact the adsorptive propertiesof the matrix, instead they impact the adherence of the adsorbent layer tothe backing.Available binders:
• Polymeric (organic) binders - Plates with adsorbent layers containingpolymeric binders are generally most rugged, making sample handlingand application easier. They also permit the use of higher water content inthe developing solvent. They are generally recommended for all TLCapplications except for those that use charring for visualization.
• Inorganic binder - Plates with adsorbent layers containing inorganicbinders are not as rugged as those with organic binders but are generallymore rugged than plates without a binder or with a gypsum binder. Theyare the most water resistant and are often used for preparative TLC platesbecause thay are soft, allowing for spots containing the target molecule tobe easily scraped off the support for elution and recovery. Plates withinorganic binder are recommended for applications requiring charring forvisualization, or when developing or visualization reagents interact with anorgainc binder.
• Gypsum or no binder - Plates with adsorbent layers that do not contain abinder or that use a gypsum binder are generally least rugged andfracture easily. They are not recommended for use with developingsolvents containing more that 20% water. Like plates with inorganic layers,they allow spots containing target molecules to be easily scraped off thesupport for elution and recovery and are recommended for applicationsrequiring charring for visulization.
Plate DimensionsChoose from a comprehensive variety of plate dimensions:
• Larger plates (such as 20 cm x 20 cm plates) are oftern less costly as theycan be cut into smaller sizes as needed.
• Pre-scoring (available on some of our glass plates) makes cutting glassplates easier and safer as they can be easily snapped into smallerdimensions.
• Aluminum and plastic (PET)-backed plates are easy to cut to desireddimensionis with a pair of scissors.
• Smaller, pre-cut plates are also available and offer the advantages ofconvenience and ease of use that may make them the more practicalchoice in lavbs where productivity rather than per plate cost is the majordriver.
HPTLC PlatesAchieve Faster Separations and Increased SensitivityMuch like HPLC grew out of improvements in column chromatography, HPTLC grew out of improvements in the quality of sorbents, consistency of platemanufacture, techniques and equipment for sample and detection reagent application, and a generally greater understanding of chromatographic theory.HPTLC (high performance TLC) plates are characterized by smaller particles (≤10 μm), thinner layers (≤150 μm) and smaller plates (≤10 cm developingdistance). In addition, the particle size distribution of the sorbent is typically narrower than for standard TLC layers. The thinner layers allow for faster solventmigration. Sample volumes for HPTLC are generally less than one microliter. The smooth surface of HPTLC plates reduces noise when performingdensitometric quantitation, increasing sensitivity.
HPTLC plates offer users the following advantages over conventional TLC:• Better resolving power per unit distance• Faster development times• Lower sample diffusion• Reduced solvent consumption

Standard Analytical TLC PlatesDevelop the Method and Verify ResultsThin Layer Chromatography can be used for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Standard analytical TLC plates typically have adsorbent layers that arenominally between 200 and 250 microns in thickness. Our standard TLC plates are available coated with a variety of matrices, with and without indicators.
TLC Plates - Glass Support
Glass is the most common plate backing because it is rigid, transparent and chemically resistant to all mobile phases and visualization methods, most notablyto charring with corrosive agents. Glass plates are also reusable; an important consideration for analysts who make their own plates. For in situ densitometricquantification, the use of highly uniform pre-coated layers on glass is virtually mandatory for adequate reproducibility and accuracy. Scored glass plates arealso available that can be easily snapped into smaller, more convenient sizes to accommodate fewer samples or smaller developing tanks.

TLC Plates - Aluminum Foil Support
Plates that employ aluminum foil backing are easy to handle, lightweight and flexible. They can be easily cut to desired dimensions with scissors or stored inlaboratory notebooks. They have high solvent resistance and good heat stability. A strong adsorbent layer adherence also makes them a good choice for usewith eluants containing high concentrations of water. However, unlike glass backing, aluminum foil backing is not reusable and aluminum backed plates arenot as chemically resistant as glass to reagents such as mineral acids and concentrated ammonia.

TLC Plates - Polyester (PET) Support
Plates that utilize PET (polyethylene terephthalate) are easy to handle, lightweight and flexible. Developed PET-plates can be stored in laboratory notebooks fordocumentation or cut into strips; options that are not possible with glass plates. However, their flexibility can cause the sorbent layer to break and care mustbe taken not to allow them to curl during drying and activation processes. However, unlike glass backing, PET backing is not reusable and because PET backedplates have lower heat stability, charring must be done at lower temperatures.

Prep TLC PlatesIsolate and Recover Your CompoundPreparative TLC is used to purify and isolate a particular substance by separating it from contaminants. Preparative TLC plates have adsorbent layers that aregreater than 500 microns in thickness allowing them to be used for the separation of larger quantities of material. When a binder is required, the softerinorganic binders are often used so the sample bands can be more easily removed. Our glass plates for Preparative TLC are available coated with bothunmodified and bonded silica matrices and are available with and without fluorescent indicator.

Sequential Spraying Makes Drug andLipid Detection Simpler
Drugs such as amphetamines, phenothiazines, and methaqualone canbe sequentially detected on a single plate. After removing the plate fromthe tank, it is dried (5 min, 110 °C), cooled and sprayed with fluorescamine(Cat. No.34653). After 5-10 minutes, amphetamines will exhibit bright greenfluorescence under long-wave UV. The plate is subsequently warmed to110 °C for 1-2 min causing phenothiazines to develop color and tranquilizersto exhibit fluorescence under long-wave UV. Finally, the plate is sprayedwith neutral iodoplatinate (Cat. No. 34651) allowing the detection ofmethaqualone and hydrolyzed methaqualone.
Amphetamines and alkaloids can likewise be sequentially detected onone plate. After removing the plate from the tank, it is dried (5 min, 110 °C),cooled and examined under long-wave UV for quinine, quinine metabolites,and demerol. The plate is next sprayed with ninhydrin (Cat. No. N0757),heated at 90 °C for 10 min and sprayed heavily with diphenyl-carbazone foran intense response from amphetamines and methamphetamines. Theplate is then sprayed with acidic iodoplatinate (Cat. No. I0256), which causesalkaloids to appear as spots of various colors. (To aid in identifying specificcompounds, certain colors can be changed or intensified by oversprayingthe plate with Dragendorff′s reagent (Cat. No. D7518)). Finally, the plate issprayed with ammoniacal silver nitrate and heated (10 min, 110 °C), to allowfor the detection of morphine.
Ninhydrin and Phospray, can be applied sequentially to visualizeseparated lipids. After the plate has been allowed to dry, it is sprayed withninhydrin and gently warmed. Amino containing compounds (phosphatidylethanolamine, etc.) will appear as pink spots. (These spots can be marked toavoid confusion in the next step.) The plate is next cooled to roomtemperature and sprayed with Phospray to reveal phosphorus-containingcompounds (phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine etc.).
