David studied in London under the late Sir Kyffin
Williams RA and Anthony Green RA before being
offered a place at the Royal College of Art. He is a
true protégé of Sir Kyffin, sharing his fundamental
belief that drawing and draughtsmanship are a vital
part of the artist’s craft. In the last decade,
Although he has enjoyed a love affair with the
English countryside for many years, he has also
worked extensively in Southern Europe spending
substantial amounts of time in France and Italy.
Working with a limited palette, he is always faithful
to the truth in what he sees.
His portraits reveal the same integrity, and his
sculptures, whether in bronze, stone or marble,
are faithful to his belief in a natural and simple
beauty in all things.
David has exhibited hundreds of palette knife
works in galleries throughout the UK and
beyond. He shares Sir Kyffin’s love of
landscapes, but previous experience in the
fashion industry has also given him great flair
for capturing body language in his figurative
work. David’s work is in collections in the UK,
France, Italy and the USA.
“The work of David Porteous-Butlerreveals an honest and direct affinitywith his subject that is driven by his
love of the natural world.”

"Imagine coating a copper plate
thinly with wax, then blackening the
wax with the smoke of lighted tapers,
taking a metal point with a wooden
handle and drawing on the black
surface to reveal gleaming traces of
the copper beneath. That’s the first
step in making an etching.
Child’s play, isn’t it?"

Perhaps it all dates back to childhood holidays,
that first amazement at seeing jewelled lizards in
the mediterraenean dust, or the snake that
whizzed across my path leaving me dazzled and
wondering if it had been a trick of the light. Or it
might have been that fateful plaster hedgehog my
mum made when I was 6, or the afternoons at the
zoo, or my hero-worship of the biology teacher…
Whatever the reason, I am passionately
interested in all kinds of wildlife, exotic or familiar,
and spend hours modelling and drawing in
aquariums, vivariums, stables, farms, zoos, bird
parks – in fact anywhere I can watch animals
getting on with their lives.
That first flash of excitement, the thing that
makes me want to do an animal comes from
seeing it move: it’s that liveliness which I want
to convey. I look for it in the tautness of a neck
or the position of the ears, a stretch, or else
through a mood: concentration, menace,
hunger.
“It’s smokey and messy, imprecise and dangerous, you can hardly see through the steamed-upgoggles, you’re never stop swallowing bits ofsawdust trapped inside the gas-mask and you’reboiling in the straight-jacket of protective clothingbut then… magic : out come the animals…spitting fire, running with molten glaze, practically alive and kicking.”
"Raku firing was just one afternoonat a friend’s house. For a long time I’d
been drawn to this exotic-soundingproceedure in the same way thatothers are drawn to a particular
instrument or to space travel.
The single demonstration was theconfirmation I needed and I
abandonned stoneware andporcelain for raku almost overnightand have done little else for the last
25 years.”

Hubert de Watrigant, internationally respected as a
contemporary master of equestrian and racing art,
and perhaps the most famous equestrian and racing
artist in Europe today, was born in France in 1954.
His father was a successful breeder and trainer
living in South West France, where Hubert grew up
and now spends an increasing part of his time. An
early obsession with sketching horses in his father’s
stables was to forecast his future talent and success.
He spent his early career in Paris, in a variety of
occupations, before devoting himself to painting
full-time. He became a professional artist in 1976,
and his reputation grew rapidly.
The Equestrian world is de Watrigant’s great
passion and his constant source of inspiration.
Horses, jockeys, trainers and owners—devotees
of the turf—are all depicted in his unique and
inimitable style. His paintings are marked by
their outstanding draughtsmanship, movement,
and bold combination of materials, including
charcoal, pastel, watercolor, pen and ink,
gouache and oil. He has exhibited worldwide
and has an extensive international clientele. His
paintings are to be found in prestigious
collections in Great Britain, Europe, Japan, the
Middle East and the USA.
"Ever since the first of his exhibitions infive countries Hubert de Watrigant has
been a front-runner in the evolution of hisart. His dexterity with range of materials
allied to outstandingly accomplisheddraughtsmanship combine to enrich hisvivid interpretation of the racing scene.
It is one with which – as the son of SouthWest France racehorse breeder and
trainer – he has enjoyed lifelongfamiliarity. It is this familiarity, this “sensedu cheval”, which resonates in the spirit of
Hubert de Watrigant’s exciting work."

"Particularly notable is his distinctly
impressionist approach to the world of racing
and his expression of transience. Watrigant
anchors these fleeting movements in a wide
variety of materials including charcoal,
pastel, oils and collage."
COUNTRY LIFE MAGAZINE, JUNE 2015
Gail Wendorf studied painting at the University
of California, Irvine then her lifelong interest in
archaeology led her to California State
University where she combined a love of
painting and drawing to create a unique degree
programme, obtaining a degree in
Archaeological Illustration in 1978. Her work as
an illustrator has taken her all over the world
and this global perspective has had a great
influence on her life and work.
In both figurative and landscape paintings her
goal is the interpretation of movement, light,
colour and passion in the music, dance or
landscape.
Working in the studio and plein air, through the
use of camera, sketches and finally oil paint, her
work invites you in to feel the passion and
movement, hear the music and laughter, feel
the wind or hear the water….or just listen to
the peace. Gail now lives and works between
Glenfinnan and New Mexico and paints the
musicians, the ceilidhs and the landscape that
carries so much of the scot’s passion for life.
“I am always inspired, and healed (ifnecessary) by the light, the landscape.
The French country side around theCote d’Azur has always been a place
that re-inspires me when I get tired orfrustrated.”
