• Brewing can be dated back to at least 7000 BC.• Many archeologists believe beer was the catalyst

which led to the civilization of humans.

What is Beer Made Of?• Water– Beer is between 90-97% water depending on the style!

• Malted Barley– What does “malted” mean?– Examples of different malt styles

• Hops– Bittering Hops (IBU’s)– Aroma/Flavor Hops

• Yeast– Ale– Lager

• During fermentation all brewing yeast produce over 200 different flavor active compounds. The proportions of these individual flavors is what gives each strain its own unique flavor profile.

• The latest official Beer Style Guidelines published by the Brewers Association in 2013 list 140 different beer styles.

• So what makes all these unique styles?– Their flavor emphasizes on one or more of the

ingredients discussed earlier……
