Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Situated along the Hrazdan River, Yerevan is the administrative, cultural, and industrial center of the country. It has been the capital since 1918, the thirteenth in the history of Armenia, and the seventh located in or around the Ararat plain. Yerevan was named the 2012 World Book Capital by UNESCO. Yerevan is an associate member of Eurocities. The Cascade, a giant stairway in Yerevan, links the downtown Kentron area of Yerevan with the Monument neighborhood
After seven years of renovation the Cascade – a former Soviet monument in the center of Yerevan - has been completely transformed into one of the world’s outstanding contemporary art centersVirtually every aspect of this 13,000 square meter monument has been transformed, and it now houses a Visitor Center, Museum Store, Special Events Auditorium and over 1,100 square meters of exhibition space. The center bears the name of its principal benefactor Gerard L. Cafesjian. Inside the Cascade, underneath the exterior steps is a couple of escalators going the length of the complex. There are also rooms connected to some of the landings along the escalators which comprise the Cafesjian Museum of Art
