Metaphors
Metaphors are imaginative ways to describe something bycomparing that thing to something else. For example, if I wantedto say that Dan is very tall, I could say:Dan is a giant . metaphorsare used in figurative language.
Examples: My uncle is a giant. ( This means he is very tall)
My mom is as kind as an angel
He flies when I call him (He comes very fast)
My grandma is as slow as a turtle
George is a sheep
as cool as a cucumber
Name of activity: learning vocabulary by categories
Why the need for categorization in learning vocabulary? The main reason is that humans learn by creating relationshipsbetween things. By making connections between words andideas, and between words and pictures, we gain vocabulary. Thebrain is always in search mode seeking out new knowledge bymaking associations with old knowledge. It is simple for us to seea picture of a nurse in front of a hospital, pushing a wheelchair, and figure out that she is somehow associated with healthcare.Connections make the learning process faster and more efficient.
