Yogi Vemana

Kumaragiri Vema Reddy, popularly known as Vemana was the third

and youngest son of Gaddam Vema, then the king of Kondaveeduin present-day Andhra Pradesh. He was named Vemareddy after his

father.

Vemana omposed numerous poems, whih were written in the popular

vernaular of !elugu, and are known for their use of simple language and native

idioms. His poems disuss the su"#ets of $oga, wisdom and morality. Vemana ame

into ontat with %am"ika &iva $ogi in Kondaveedu, who initiated him into the path

of $oga. After this, Vemana travelled aross the state, omposing poetry and

attaining suess in yoga. He traveled widely aross south 'ndia, a(uiring

popularity as a poet and $ogi. He is popularly alled $ogi Vemana, in reognition of

his suess in the path of $oga.

!here is no onsensus among sholars a"out the period in whih Vemana

lived. ).P. *rown, known for his researh on Vemana, estimates the year of "irth to

"e the year +A/ "ased on some of his verses. Various soures say he was "orn

in the 0fteenth, si1teenth and seventeen enturies.

His poems are four lines in length. !he fourth line is, in ma#ority of the ases,

the signature line Viswadhaa"hi Raama, Vinura Vema, literally *eloved of

Vishwadha, listen Vemaa 2 he thus onveyed his message with three small lines

written in a simple vernaular. !here are many interpretations of what the last linesigni0es.

&o high was the regard for Vemana that a popular !elugu saying goes

padyam, a poem with a hidden meaning. People really took to Vemana3s poems

owing to their simple language and sweet message. 4any lines of Vemana3s poems

are now ollo(uial phrases of the !elugu language.

*ritish oupation of 'ndia. A large seletion of his poems are a part of the present

High &hool urriulum of !elugu in Andhra Pradesh. 'n his honor, !he Andhra

Pradesh government named a 7niversity in Kadapa the $ogi Vemana 7niversity in
