The City of Kitakyushu has strong manga and anime culture

and was selected as one of “88 Anime Meccas you want to

visit” in 2018. UKK is offering a 2-week intensive course for

Japanese learners which not only allows participants to

study Japanese using these manga and anime but also

allows them to deepen their understanding of the issues

facing Japanese society now, including the environment,

tourism and regional revitalization. This exciting international

exchange opportunity is available only to students of UKK’s

Kitakyushu City was the only city in Asia to be designated as an SDGs Model City by the OECD.

Local UKK Buddy System

Participants will have the opportunity to develop intercultural relationships as they interact with UKK students over the course of their stay. Each student will be paired with a UKK student (a ”buddy”) that will offer language advice and accompany visiting students to program events.

WHY UKK?Established just after the end of the

Second World War, the citizens of Kitakyushu founded UKK with ‘peace’ firmly in mind. The institution’s goal is to create a peaceful future through dialogue. UKK aims to train graduates who will facilitate constructive interconnection and social development both in Asia and in the

broader global community.

Eligibility

Number of Places

(1) Program period: Arrive in Japan on Sunday, June 21, 2020, and leave on Sunday, July 5, 2020

(14 nights, 15 days)

(2) Application period: February 24, through, March 23, 2020

(3) Applications will be accepted until all positions have been filled. Our website will be updated as necessary.

(1) Participants must be a student at a university or graduate school with an exchange agreement with UKK.*1

(2) In principle, qualified students at UKK partner institutions will always be accepted. Additionally, students at other institutions may be considered in cases where a recommendation is provided by an institution with an agreement with UKK.*2

*1(Students who will graduate before the start of this course are ineligible.)

*2(Students at institution with an exchange agreement with UKK will be prioritized over students at other

institutions, due to the limited number of places.)

All program participants must purchase travel insurance that covers accidents, injuries and sickness, etc. during travel to and from Japan and throughout their stay in Japan.

Participants that require a visa for their stay in Japan must prepare the relevant documentation and submit it to their closest Japanese embassy, etc. If a program invitation or any other information is required in order to obtain a visa, please contact us by February 28.

How to Apply(All 3 of the following  documents are  required)

Program Fee

(1) Number of credits granted: 3 (number certified by UKK)

(2) A certificate of completion and report of results will be issued to all participants.

(3) Please check with your home university whether credits granted by UKK (equivalent to 50 hours of Japanese study) will be transferable to the home institution.

Optional tours and extra-curricular activities will be planned so that each student may experience and learn about Japanese culture/society in depth at a variety of famous local sites. (Details will be announced later.)

(1) Fill out and sign the application form that can be downloaded from the online application site and submit it to your home institution. Your home institution will forward it to the University of Kitakyushu.

(2) Japanese ability certification/ Evidence of Japanese ability

(3) Photocopy of passport (page including applicant’s name and photograph)

(1) JPY 135,000 (JPY 44,400 for tuition+ JPY 90,600 for accommodation, etc)

(2) This fee includes registration, tuition, accommodation and commuting fees. Travel to and from the airport on designated arrival and departure dates is also included. The price does not include air fare, travel insurance, food, or incidental travel expenses, etc.

(3) Institutions with student exchange agreements may be eligible for program fee discounts (Please inquire for details.)

Language Level

Aims

(1) Beginning and Intermediate Japanese language learners (JLPS levels N5-N2 or the equivalent) are eligible to participate in the course.

(2) Students will be divided into two or three classes according to their proficiency levels.

(3) Course instruction will occur in Japanese with English explanation added as necessary. Beginners must be able to communicate in English.

(1) To study Japanese language, affairs and culture intensively so as to develop media literacy, and to improve expression and imagination.

(2) To deepen understanding of Japanese culture and society through various exchange events with UKK students and local people, collaborative fieldwork outside the classroom, and special lectures.

(3) To nurture people who can analyze their own country’s language and culture and think with a global perspective.
