LEADERS attending the ninth BRICS summit in the southeast-ern Chinese city of Xiamen have reached extensive consensus on the international situation, global governance and BRICS cooperation, President Xi Jin-ping told reporters yesterday at the end of the three-day event.

The summit adopted the BRICS Leaders Xiamen Declara-tion, which reaffi rmed the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, and mapped out a new blueprint for strengthening BRICS partner-ship and deepening practical cooperation in various areas, Xi said.

Leaders of the BRICS countries have called for expediting reform of global economic governance, and increasing the represen-tation and voice of emerging markets and developing coun-

tries, Xi told the journalists.During the summit, China also

held the Dialogue of Emerging Markets and Developing Coun-tries, in which leaders of Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Tajikistan and Guinea joined the BRICS leaders, agreed to forge broadly based partnerships and step up implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to promote common development of all countries, he said.

“Leaders attending the dia-logue agree that emerging market and developing countries, which enjoy good growth momentum, are well placed to play a bigger role in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Devel-opment and improving global economic governance,” Xi said.

The dialogue is proposed by China to pull together emerg-ing markets and developing

countries and push BRICS as a leading platform for South-South cooperation.

During the dialogue, President Xi announced that China will provide US$500 million to sup-port South-South cooperation.

The funds will be used to help fellow developing coun-tries tackle challenges such as famine, refugees, climate change and public health. China will also provide other developing countries with 40,000 training opportunities in the country in the coming year.

He said that “BRICS Plus” leaders have agreed on deepen-ing South-South cooperation, fostering the “BRICS Plus” approach, and building extensive partnerships.

Xi said the countries together can embrace a sustainable path of innovative, coordinated,

green, open and shared develop-ment, and inject “more positive energy” to global growth and shared prosperity.

The BRIC grouping of Brazil, Russia, India and China was formally established in 2006. In 2010, South Africa joined the group and the acronym was changed to BRICS.

China, which holds the group’s rotating presidency this year, has proposed “BRICS Plus” to invite leaders of fi ve other developing countries — Egypt, Mexico, Thai-land, Tajikistan and Guinea — to the summit for the dialogue.

The BRICS Xiamen summit, with the theme of “BRICS: Stron-ger Partnership for a Brighter Future,” was held Sept. 3-5.

The 10th BRICS summit will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2018. (Xinhua) (Related story on P4)
