Word of the Day 10/15/14Formal
Formal is an adjective.
The definition of formal is having a regular or orderly pattern or arrangement; bound.
An example of how you might use formal in a sentence is: The unsatisfied customer lodged a formal complaint to the manager.
WARM UPList as many qualitative and quantitative observations about your neighbor’s hand as you can.
. ANSWER: answers will vary1. Wrinkled2. Pinkish and tan color3. 5 large blue veins visible4. 5 fingers of different lengths5. Fingernails are made of different material than the skin6. Hair is present on back side but not on palm 7. Shakes when hold very still8. Fingers are approximately 6 cm in length.9. Length of hand, from wrist to longest finger, is
approximately 10 cm.
Scientific Method Notes
#2 students please open folder and hand out the scientific method notes
You will fill in the blanks with the words written in red as Mrs. Groom reads the information.
Steps in the Scientific Method
• Observation• Hypothesis• Experiment• Data Collection• Conclusion• Communicate
Observations
• An example of an observation
might be noticing that
many salamanders near a pond have curved, not straight,
tails
Hypothesis
• A suggested solution to the problem.
• Must be testable
• Usually written as If…Then… statements
• Predicts an outcome
Hypothesis
• An example of a hypothesis might be
“ If salamanders have curved tails then they are better adapted to a pollutant in the moist soil where they live.”
Experiment (Big Bang Clip)
A good or “valid”
experiment will only
have ONE variable!
Communicate
Scientists always communicate their results. Experiments
must be repeatable by
other scientists.
Review 1)Identify a Problem2) State Observations about
the problem3) Form a Hypothesis about
the problem (if…then…)4) Design an Experiment to
test the hypothesis5) Collect Data (qualitative
and quantitative observations)
6) Form a Conclusion7) Communicate steps and
results
Cut and Glue the following papers in your notebooks:
1. scientific method notes and study guide
2.The chart of the steps of the scientific method
You have 5 minutes!
Scientific Method Foldable
Directions: You will each create a tab foldable of the steps of the scientific method
Insert picture of foldable Scanned picture
Scientific Method Foldable
Directions: #2 students please hand out 4 pieces of blank paper to each student
We will create the foldable in steps together. When you have successfully folded your paper hold it
up so Mrs. Groom can check that you did it right.
1. Use your ruler to measure 3.5 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. 2. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark.3. Write 1 on this paper in pencil
3.5 cm
1. Use your ruler to measure 5.0 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. 2. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark.3. Write 2 on this paper in pencil
5.0 cm
1. Use your ruler to measure 8.0 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. 2. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark.3. Write 3 on this paper in pencil
8.0 cm
1. Use your ruler to measure 12.0 cm from the top of the paper and mark it with your pencil. 2. Fold the paper HORIZONTALLY at the mark.3. Write 4 on this paper in pencil
12.0 cm
1. Insert the paper with the #2 written on it under the paper with the #1 on it.2. Insert the paper with the #3 written on it under the #2 paper.3. Insert the paper with the #4 written on it under the #3 paper.4. HOLD UP YOUR FLIPBOOK SO MRS. GROOM CAN CHECK THAT IT IS FOLDED CORRECTLY.5. STAPLE THE TOP OF THE FLIPBOOK 3 TIMES – SEE MRS. GROOM’S EXAMPLE6. Erase the numbers on the papers
Write the following labels on each flap – write in pencil – you can use markers later

Communicate
Each flap/step of the scientific method will include:
1. Key information and details related to that step in the scientific method.
See Mrs. Groom’s example
Work on your foldable flapbook until Mrs. Groom calls for clean up, then collect flapbooks in your
period’s table folder in the bin.
#2 students please open your folder and hand out the scientific process reading1. Read the article and answer the questions on the back of the paper2. Hold onto your papers we will grade them and collect them at the end of class
Grading procedure1. Put pencil away2. Use pen to grade3. Name of grader
at bottom4. Total out of 10 at
top ex: 10/10
