information on your poster......
5 points if you have the theorists name 5 points if you have the name of the theory 5 points if you have included relevant info about
the theory 3 points if you have named all stages 5 points if you have described or explained the
stages 5 points if you have drawn the stages in a cycle 10 points if you gave a health and care example

Argyles Communication Cycle
Michael Argyle (1972) argued that interpersonal communication was a skill that could be learned
and developed.
He argued that skilled interpersonal interaction (social skills) involved a cycle where you have to
translate or ‘decode’ what other people are communicating and constantly adapt your own behaviour in order to communicate effectively.
Remember…
Verbal and non-verbal communication is not always straight forward.
Communication involves a kind of code that has to be translated. You have to
work out what another person’s behaviour actually means.
Argyles 6 stages (1972)
1) Ideas Occur2) Message Coded3) Message Sent4) Message Perceived5) Message Decoded6) Message Understood
Communication Cycle
Task…
Example of communication hand out What section of the communication cycle do
they fit into?
Task…
Mary understands what Joanne has said and decides to respond and tell Joanne what is troubling her… the communication cycle
continues…
Joanne thinks through what she is going to say and decides to smile at Mary and say “Hi,
how are you?”
Joanne says “Hi, how are you?” and smiles at
Mary.
Joanne would like to comfort Mary.
Mary interprets Joanne’s question and body language as a message that she would like to know what’s wrong
Mary hears “Hi, how are you?” and perceives the message as friendly by the smile on
Joanne’s face
Task…1. Ideas occur: you have an idea that you want to communicate.2. Message coded: you think through what you are going to say
what you are thinking. You put your thoughts into language or into some other code such as sign language.
3. Message sent: you speak, or perhaps you sign or write, or in some way send your message.
4. Message perceived: the other person has to sense your message – they hear your words or see your symbols.
5. Message decoded: the other person has to interpret or decode your message ie. what you have said. This is not always easy as the other person will make assumptions about your words and body language.
6. Message Understood: if all goes well then your ideas will be understood but this does not always happen first time!
6 stages Answers 1 Idea occurs: Joanne would like to comfort Mary. 2 Message coded: Joanne thinks through what she is going to
say and decides to smile at Mary and say “Hi, how are you?” 3 Message sent: Joanne says “Hi, how are you?” and smiles at Mary. 4 Message perceived: Mary hears “Hi, how are you?” and perceives
the message as friendly by the smile on Joanne’s face. 5 Message decoded: Mary interprets Joanne’s question and
body language as a message that she would like to know what’s wrong. 6 Message understood: Mary understands what Joanne has said and
decides to respond and tell Joanne what is troubling her… the communication cycle continues…
Independent Task…
Can you think of some examples linked to health? Think of one and write, separating into each of the 6
stages
( will be able to use as part of upcoming assignment!)
