Music of Another Culture

1. Choose a culture from the list below & in consultation with your teacher (the focus is on traditional music)

2. Provide an information page on your chosen culture (geography, population, wealth) and how they perform music (ceremonies, weddings, religious festivals).

3. Research and provide 3-5 instruments from this culture and classify them according to the Sachs-Hornbostel system http://thurly.net/10b3

4. Describe & Notate the types of Scales or Rhythms featured in your culture’s music (find Youtube demo videos or instrumental lessons online, google books etc)

5. Finish with a Bibliography page stating where you obtained every link, image, sound clip & video with its owners (you can search Compfight for free images and edit them in Picnik)

Extension• If you find you have a passion for the music of Mexico and know of a parent, grandparent etc

who is a Mariachi musician, video them performing and include it in your website

• Undertake an in-depth analysis of Greek Music and include it as a PDF on your site

• Learn to clap the main Clave rhythms from Cuba and record the audio on the laptops, edit it in Audacity an upload them to your website

• If you are currently learning, or can play, a piece of music from China for example, get your instrumental tutor to record you and include a performance review stating how you performed this piece and what you had to do to learn it
