The Senate Recovery Now plan would oer millions of dollars to prop up a variety of struggling sectors, in- cluding housing, health care, educa- tion, nonprots and businesses such as restaurants and hotels. The Democrats’ plan would add to Gov. Larry Hogan’s RELIEF Act, a pro- posal that would provide stimulus payments to certain working Mary- landers, eliminate state income tax on unemployment benets and oer tax breaks to some businesses. Senate President Bill Ferguson said Wednesday that the Senate’s Recovery Now plan would be treated as an amendment to the RELIEF Act and would ll in gaps in Hogan’s plan. To- gether, the two plans would cost roughly $1.3 billion. “The Senate will be focusing on CO- VID relief through the eyes of our most vulnerable and impacted Marylanders and small businesses,” Ferguson said. “We know that this crisis has not been felt equally, and equitable recovery is essential.” What the relief plan would do Among the plan’s highlights are one-time grants of $1,000 to people whose unemployment claims are stuck in limbo while caseworkers ad- judicate their cases; $25 million in housing assistance to eliminate hous- ing debt for 5,000 Marylanders; $10 million for food banks and $9 million to help with utility debts.
