Introduction

Kia ora, nau mai, hāere mai, tautī mai. Thank you for your interest in Whenua Kura, an Iwi-lead partnership between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Te Tapuae o Rēhua, Lincoln University, and Ngāi Tahu Farming.

Whenua Kura was established in 2014 to grow Māori leadership in the agriculture sector and as a pathway for Māori to gain qualifications and employment, within the primary industries sector. Whenua Kura is a vehicle to support more Māori into leadership positions in agriculture, which contributes to bringing about social advancement and development for Māori both within the Ngāi Tahu region and beyond.

If you want to learn best practice farming in a culturally responsive environment that will lead to a globally recognised qualification and an exciting career, then Whenua Kura is the place for you. Whenua Kura provides many benefits to graduates through its partners. Through Ngāi Tahu Farming, students receive real life training and work experience, with some students being offered employment after they graduate, either through full-time employment or through a cadetship. On the other hand, some students choose to continue on to higher level study at Lincoln University. Whatever you choose and how you navigate your learning journey is up to you. We are here to support you.

Whenua Kura celebrated the graduation of its first cohort from the Level 3 Certificate in Farming (Dairy) programme in May 2015. Some of these graduates have gone on to further training and some have gone on to work for Ngāi Tahu Farming, and other farms throughout the country.

We Need More Māori!Māori are major investors in our primary industries and have significant landholdings. However, this is not matched by the number of Māori working in the land based industries. The limited number of Māori working within the sector tend to lack formal qualifications, meaning that even fewer progress into leadership positions. The training and development options available are fragmented and concentrated at lower levels. Training and employment environments have limited understanding of Māori knowledge and have limited capacity to support Māori succeeding as Māori. The status quo risks Māori being relegated to passive investors of our lands rather than active stewards.

We seek change in the hope that Māori will actively work Māori lands in ways that are grounded in Māori values, and in communities that privilege our culture and care for people, land and the environment. Whenua Kura is committed to achieving the aspirations of our iwi, hapū and whānau through a collaborative effort to support meaningful and long-term transformative change for Māori, for our farm workers and for our whānau and farm communities

Our Shared VisionWhenua Kura – a movement to change the face and culture of land-based industries.

Our ultimate goal is to achieve Māori agricultural success in a Māori way. This will be achieved through growing Māori leaders to champion agricultural practices aligned with our cultural values and aspirations. Our ultimate outcome is to work with our wider communities and industries to align land-based practices with our values to meet industry needs in a way that grows the mana of our people, land and environment.

Our Principles and ValuesKaitiakitanga (Guardianship/Stewardship) – using leading-edge environmental practices that enhance the mauri of our communities, lands and environments.

Whanaungatanga (Family connections) – Creating strong communities, bringing together tauira, kaiako, kaimahi, whānau, iwi and hapū to collectively advance Māori success through whānau transformation.

Rangatiratanga (Leadership) – Leading through service, and leading collaboratively in a way that empowers our whānau, through creating our leaders of tomorrow.

Manaakitanga (Looking after each other) – Looking after our students, our kaimahi, our communities, and our partnership.

Ngāi Tahutanga (Our unique position as Ngāi Tahu) – celebrating our cultural values and sharing our tāonga with all.

The aim is to make students aware of the importance of sustainability from a Māori perspective and how that builds resilience

and protects assets.

Renata Hakiwai Director-Kaiarahi Whenua Kura

Our Strategic GoalsGoal 1: Increase Māori participation in land-based training.

Goal 2: Increase Māori educational achievement success – Māori achieving success as Māori.

Goal 3: Increase Māori entering and gaining employment in land based industries.

Goal 4: Increase and grow Māori leadership in all sectors of land-based industries.

Goal 5: Grow the influence of Ngāi Tahu values on the culture and practices of land-based industries and their communities.

My dream for our people is simple: to be culturally strong, healthy and happy. Achieving this dream is complex, but we are a tenacious

people. We have a long and proven history of being able to adapt and innovate, and we continue these traditions today guided by a set of values handed down by our ancestors.

Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei – for us, and our children after us, is the vision that

guides us as we invest our time and collective resources in initiatives that will create

opportunities to enhance the intergenerational wellbeing of Ngāi Tahu Whānui and grow our

communities into the future.

“Whenua Kura, Wai Māori, Tū Tangata” (Treasured Lands, Fresh Waters, Prosperous People)

The name Whenua Kura relates to the area surrounding the Ngāi Tahu farms at Te Whenua Hou (Eyrewell). The tohu (logo) has been designed with the above whakatauāki (proverb) in mind.

Ngā maunga (The mountains)

The mountains shaped in the negative (white) space reference the upper reaches of our catchment: He marangai ki uta. He māra kai ki tai. Also a reminder to all to reach for the highest potential in everything we do.

Te whenua (The land)

The green depicts the land – Papatuānuku (mother earth). It reminds us of our duty to care for the land as kaitiaki (guardians) and to leave it in a better state than we found it for future generations. Its colour speaks of resilience and sustenance.

Ngā wai Māori me te Koru (Fresh water and the Frond)

The blue refers to our waterways, which sustain all life. The koru (frond) represents new growth which springs from land, water and sky. It is the unfurling of our aspirations as Ngāi Tahu to protect and enhance wāhi taonga (treasured areas) within our environment so that our mahinga kai (food cultivations), culture and communities can continue for the benefit of future generations.

Te Raukura (The feather)

The raukura forms the base and supports these elements in a cradle of equilibrium. The burnt red earth colour (kura) is a traditional symbol of leadership and its associated responsibilities to weave all strands together for greater strength and sustained prosperity. The feather acknowledges the people behind the Whenua Kura initiative who have inspired it, as well as those who have come together to build, grow and champion it.

Finally, the two woven ‘flags’ either side of the text reference the two baskets of knowledge that will be required to make Whenua Kura a success: industry best-practice married with traditional kaitiakitanga values and objectives.

There are many advantages in studying with Whenua Kura.

Why Whenua Kura?

First and foremost, Whenua Kura is an opportunity to study agriculture and tikanga and/or te reo Māori at the same time. Although these two areas may not be delivered by the same tutors, you will be able to see how the two areas can work seamlessly together which will add value to your experience and knowledge.

Whenua Kura has tuition fees scholarships available to study at various levels and in various disciplines, including Sheep and Beef farming, Apiculture, Dairy farming and Horticulture. These scholarships will help ease some of the financial burden on yourself and your whānau.

Because you will be enrolled as a Lincoln University student, your studies will lead to a university qualification which is recognised throughout New Zealand and the world. This will provide you with a seamless pathway into higher levels of study at Lincoln University if you choose to continue your studies.

11

Because the training is delivered by Lincoln University, the only New Zealand university that is fully dedicated to teaching farming and land-based subjects, you will be learning from the best.

You will gain real-life work experience and training on various working farms, including the Ngāi Tahu farms, the Telford farm and associated farms. This will introduce you to a network of farmers, and provide a foot in the door if you would like to work on any of these farms in the future, or could potentially provide you with a referee if you go on to work elsewhere.

I’m enjoying being a Whenua Kura student with Lincoln University at the Telford campus. Whenua Kura provides opportunities for students to go to new places across the South Island, meet new people and learn about the tikanga of those places, which I really enjoy. I also enjoy the hands-on farm training and learning safe and correct farming techniques. It’s a great experience and I would recommend Whenua Kura to other young Māori who want to get into agriculture as a career.

I really enjoyed the programme because I was able to meet new people and learn new things. My whānau is proud of my achievements and so am I. “I’m really enjoying learning about planting techniques, different types of plants and the different types of soil. I love how the programme combines scientific research with a tikanga Māori view on horticulture and land management, for me it’s a perfect balance. I can remember seeing my kaumātua in the māra kai (vege gardens) doing the things we’re learning about and never really understood why, but this programme has opened my eyes and helped me understand the reasons why they did what they did. In the future I want to take what I’ve learned and use it to benefit my whānau and also give back to the community. I would highly recommend this programme to anyone that’s interested in horticulture. It’s fun, you learn a lot, and you get to meet some awesome people along the way.”

ASH-LEIGH CAMPBELLNgāi Tahu Diploma in Agriculture (level 5) 2015 Graduate

“For me, Whenua Kura has been a journey of discovering my connections with Ngāi Tahu and what it means to be Ngāi Tahu. Academically, not only has the Whenua Kura scholarship provided financial support for my university fees but it has also provided mentors from within the agricultural industry to give guidance around my career development.

I am currently completing the Diploma in Farm Management (Level 6) programme at Lincoln University. Once finished I hope to take on a role within Ngāi Tahu farming whilst completing a Bachelor of Commerce (agriculture) part time. Being a part of this programme has created many networking opportunities with industry leaders and organisations. I encourage any young Māori seeking a career in the agriculture industry to take advantage and be involved in the recently developed Whenua Kura programme.”

Te Whenua Hou Ngāi Tahu farmsThe residential hostel and lodge facilities are located within the heart of Te Whenua Hou, a collection of Ngāi Tahu farms 40km northwest of Christchurch. Enjoy the country life and its surrounding whilst being close to the city. This is a highly subsidised, fully catered accommodation option.

• The lodge provides a supervised, relaxed environment where it’s easy to make friends and have fun with only a short drive to local amenities. The lodge is 10mins to Oxford, 20mins to Rangiora and 40mins to Christchurch CBD.

• The facilities consist of fully furnished rooms, a recreational common room, community hall, gym, computer suite, shared laundry facilities and outdoor facilities including a rugby field, basketball court and recreation fields.

• Common room facilities consist of Sky TV, WiFi, DVD players, table tennis and pool tables.

Finding a place to live while you study is as important as choosing the right programme of study.

Accommodation

Te Waihora Halls • The Halls of Residence are located near each other

on the Te Waihora campus, and the residents in the catered halls all dine together each day. You can get involved in the many social events and recreational facilities in your hall – ranging from live concerts to parties, video evenings and sports competitions – as there is always something going on.

• Students who prefer a full service live in the catered halls, while students who prefer to cook for themselves often choose semi-catered or self-catered.

Telford Halls • The Halls of Residence (hostels) provide a

fully-supervised, relaxed environment where it’s easy to make friends and have fun. Set amongst spacious, landscaped grounds, the Halls are a short walk from the workshops, classrooms and other teaching facilities.

• Every room is fully furnished and serviced (with a choice of shared or ensuite bathroom facilities) and all meals are provided.

• Lounges are attached to some of the halls, providing Sky TV, DVD players and a place to socialise, while the largest of these lounges is also home to pool tables and a canteen.

• The hostel manager is housed on campus, as well as hostel supervisors who provide overnight supervision.

independently. If you are planning to go flatting, please do not sign up to a place before you have seen it. We suggest you book temporary accommodation before your arrival and then look.

• A great place to start your search for a flat is on TradeMe, or try notice boards around campus.

HomestaysHomestays are a great option for students on the Te Waihora campus who want to live in a home environment. To find out more search the following terms on the internet: Christchurch Homestay, Homestay.com

Get out and make friends. Keep a good balance between

Where will I live during term time?If you are doing the Certificate in Farming (Dairy), you will be staying at student accommodation located on the Ngāi Tahu farms, paying a subsidised weekly rental fee (to be advised). If you live close to the Ngāi Tahu farms, you may choose to drive in each day.

If you are doing the Diploma in Agriculture, you could stay in the student hostel on campus at Te Waihora, however places are limited so you are encouraged to get in early. The accommodation fee for the year at Te Waihora is about $13,000 but can be reduced through applying for various scholarships, so we recommend you apply for as many as you can. Please note that a $500 bond is required to hold a room. There are many scholarships out there so check with your iwi, local District Council or search for scholarships on the internet. You might also decide to find alternative accommodation such as flatting or boarding with whānau.

If you’re doing the Certificate in Agriculture, Telford provides on-campus accommodation in the student halls of residence. There are room options available – single with your choice of ensuite or shared bathroom. Once again you are responsible for paying the hostel fee. All rooms and living areas are cleaned by cleaners. Meals are prepared, cooked and supplied by on-campus caterers. It is recommended you apply early to ensure a place.

Is there Internet availability in the halls of residence? At the Telford Campus, the halls of residence have Wi-Fi available. 2GB of data is free of charge per month. Additional data can be purchased.

At Te Whenua Hou, the classroom has Wi-Fi available for students to use.

At the Te Waihora campus, there is Internet connectivity available throughout the campus. If you are staying in the halls of residence, your Internet usage is covered by your accommodation fees.

Other ScholarshipsScholarships are a useful way of helping to pay for fees and may even contribute to living costs. Many people tend to misunderstand scholarships and presume they are only available to A+ students.

Some scholarships cover accommodation and other costs, but most cover fees. In some cases it is possible to hold more than one scholarship at a time.

There are many scholarships offered at Lincoln University. We have an extensive online scholarship database that can help you find the right scholarship and give you more information about deadlines. Remember it is important to apply early.

WHENUA KURA CONTACTS

Student loans and student allowances Don’t leave all the paperwork until the last moment – one of the first steps to this process is investigating what assistance is available from the Government and other agencies, and thinking about how you will pay for your study.

Student allowanceStudent allowance is a weekly payment to help students with their living expenses whilst studying. Unlike a student loan, a student allowance does not need to be repaid. However, students must meet certain criteria to qualify for a student allowance. To find out more or apply online, visit: www.studylink.co.nz/student-allowance

Student loansA student loan is one option available to students to finance all or part of their study. It has three components – course fees, course related costs and living costs. A student loan has to be paid back, so borrow only what is needed. To find out more or apply online, visit: www.studylink.co.nz/student-loan

Living Costs You don’t need to have been accepted onto the programme or have completed your enrolment to think about how you will fund your living expenses. If you are planning to apply for financial assistance through StudyLink you should begin to apply now. It can take several weeks for payments to begin once you start your study, so get on to this early.

We recommend that if you are starting your study in February, you should have completed your StudyLink application by 30 November of the previous year.

Contact details for Studylink Website: www.studylink.govt.nz (to apply online), or Phone: 0800 889 900 (to make an appointment with StudyLink Outreach in your area to check out your options).

Whenua Kura is a land-based training programme that is uniquely underpinned by Ngāi Tahu and Māori values such as whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, rangatiratanga and Kaitiakitanga. We take these values seriously at Whenua Kura and endeavour to apply them into our everyday operations.

All students who enrol into the Whenua Kura programme will be required to participate in several noho marae that will be held on Ngāi Tahu marae throughout the Te Waipounamu (South Island). These noho marae provide an opportunity for staff and students to learn about the history of Ngāi Tahu, learn te reo Māori and tikanga Māori and waiata in a supportive, friendly and uniquely Māori environment. Students who are not familiar with their whakapapa (ancestry) or the Māori culture will have an opportunity to connect with the culture and learn about their identity as Māori. Please note, attendance at all noho marae is a condition of the scholarship. Students who do not attend the noho marae without prior written permission will risk losing their scholarship.

Details of noho marae dates and venues will be advised at a later date.

We do!

In 1993 the University adopted an Environmental Charter and an Environmental Policy (the first among New

Zealand tertiary establishments) to support the work of

the already established staff-student group called Lincoln

Environmental Organisation (LEO). This led to the formation

of a formal Environmental Task Force and the revision of

the Policy in 2003 and 2010 – giving the University what

it now has: the Sustainability Advisory Group for the Environment (SAGE). SAGE works alongside LEO to ensure

the University ‘treads lightly on the Earth’, ensuring we

live up to our values in the areas of sustainable practices,

stewardship of our own environment, and protection of the

wider environment.

The University’s School of Landscape Architecture building

was built with locally sourced materials with a life span of

over 100 years and which require minimal maintenance.

Within this building, and across campus, the University

continues to make a difference with significant efforts

in energy conservation, water management, resource recovery and waste management.

Lincoln University is a major supporter of the Lincoln Envirotown Trust and also provides office space and

resources for the Chair of the Trust.

All our publications are printed on environmentally responsible paper, produced using Elemental Chlorine Free

(ECF), Third Party Certified pulp sourced from well managed

and legally harvested forests, and manufactured under the

strict ISO14001 Environmental Management System.

New Zealand’s native biodiversity makes this country unique

and Lincoln University is very proud of our park-like campus, gardens and the native plantings we have both on campus

and extensively at the Lincoln University Dairy Farm.

The Māori outreach programme and the work of staff across

the University aims to facilitate an understanding of, and

acknowledges Māori communities, iwi, hapu, whanau and their affinity with their whenua and their environments.

Formal partnerships and informal collaboration will ensure

a continuing mutual understanding and respect for the land,

consistent with the concept of kaitiakitanga (stewardship).

Key to all that Lincoln University does is an awareness of the environment – from our course content, to our native plantings, to the paper this publication is printed on.

As New Zealand’s specialist land-based university, our mission is to transform land, people and economies, and we aspire to do this without negatively impacting our environment.

Land is something we value. It is, literally, our world.
