What is NFC

• Near Field Communication or NFC is a short-range high

frequency wireless communication technology which enables the

exchange of data between devices

• • Its operating distance is typically up to 1.6 inches or 4 cm (often

less – like touch)

• Based on RFID technology at 13.56 MHz

• An NFC-enabled device can operate in three different modes. They

are reader/writer mode, peer-to-peer mode, and card emulation

mode.

• Possible transfer rates are 106, 212, 424kbps

Card Emulation

When an NFC-enabled device

is used in card emulation

mode, the smartphone is

viewed more as a smartcard to

the external reader rather than

a mobile device

This enables NFC mobile

phones to be used for

contactless payments,

ticketing and access control

Read/write mode

In read/write mode, the NFC

device is capable of reading

NFC Forum specified tag

types, such as an NFC smart

poster. The tag can contain

instructions for sending a short

message or launching the

browser with a specific URL.

Peer-to-Peer mode

• In peer-to-peer mode two NFC devices can actively exchange data by simply tapping together. For example to exchange content such as virtual business cards and digital photos, or print a file from a mobile phone by just touching an NFC enabled printer. Devices can act in two sub-modes:

• • Passive Communication: The initiator device provides a carrier field and the target device emulates a transponder

• • Active Communication: Both initiator and target device communicate by alternately generating their own field

NFC Tags• NFC tags are programmed with just about any sort of

information and then plopped into almost any product,

letting you read them with a smartphone or another

NFC-capable device

• Data store in NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF)

formatted data.

• NFC tags are considered passive devices

• In order to power these NFC tags, electromagnetic induction is used to create a current in the passive device.

How the Technology Works

1) Coil in the smart phone sets up a current that is picked up by the smart

tag

2) The smart tag receives the “induced current” from the cell phone,

recognizes it as a valid signal and offers a connection to the cell phone.

3) The cell phone accepts the connection and begins the transaction

Application of NFC

• Make payments via devices, instead of

credit or debit cards

• Transfer files and share documents

• Download information about objects,

services or places from “smart posters”

• Display electronic identity documents, like

air travel boarding passes
