无论是在雪花飘飞的冬日，还是阳光明媚的夏天，日本的温泉都能让人净化身心
陶醉于温泉之乡
部分。全民泡汤，在其他国家并不多见。日
本是当之无愧的温泉王国，各地都有著名的
温泉，不仅温泉数量多、种类多、质量也很
高。按不同方法可分出很多类别，如按涌出
方式，可分为“普通泉”、“间歇泉”等；
若按化学元素又可分为“二氧化碳泉”、
“硫酸盐泉”、“铁泉”等；按酸碱
值划分，则可分为“酸性温泉”、“中性温
泉”、“碱性温泉”。日本温泉目前根据泉
质所含成分不同进行分类，共分为11种类型
之多。
温泉与寒冬的奇妙组合，是日本温泉
的一大特色。凭借《雪国》、《千纸鹤》及
《古都》等作品获得诺贝尔文学奖的日本作
家川端康成，是日本历史上获得此殊荣的第
一人。他就是在位于西海岸的新泻市温泉创
作了《雪国》，这是日本最受欢迎的冬季温
泉度假胜地之一。泡在43摄氏度热气缭绕的
温泉水里看雪花乱舞，不时有雪花落在温泉
里，浪漫之余更是充满了纯净之感。这种感
受世上少有，仿若天堂。
冬日里的温暖乡
日本温泉历史可以追溯到一千多年前，民间
有许多关于温泉的记载和传说。
从外看去，温泉旅馆大都朴素平实，
门头也不大，但当你踏入其中，却是别有洞
天。这是日本人谦逊、追求自然的一种文化
映射，将生活中最纯真的美好隔离于凡尘俗
世之外。
这些用木材建造的旅馆随性而建，高低
错落，自然亲切。木头的温润质感在午后阳
光的照射下散发出特别的香气，与温泉的味
道融合在一起，清新而朴实。走进优雅的庭
院，身着传统日式和服的老板娘已经在笑脸
相迎。
旅馆内的设置饱含禅意，祥和、平静、
悠然。摇曳的灯笼配上三弦琴质朴简单的琴
声，即使是在寒冷的冬日，你也会感到温暖
和平静。走进榻榻米房间，一身和服的女服
务员温婉地奉上一盏绿茶和茶点，休息片
刻，即可开始温泉之旅。
四周没有城市的喧嚣，温泉胜地一般都

日本四岛，坐落在太平洋板块与
亚欧板块的交接之处，这个奇
特的地质环境使它成为环太平
洋地震带最为活跃的地方，也使其境内火山
密布，地形崎岖。这个多火山、多地震的岛
国，同时也得到了上天赐予的宝贵资源——
温泉。频繁的地壳活动造就了日本星罗棋布
的温泉，从海上小岛到山中谧境，处处都
有可养颜、健身的钱汤、公共浴室或各式温
泉。
日本对温泉的利用历史悠久，渐渐形
成独特的文化。日本的温泉饱含硫磺等矿物
质，具有治疗皮肤病和关节炎等疾病的良好
功效，可令身体健康，精神焕发。温泉在今
天已经成为日本在世界上的一张名片，以至
于日本人在接待宾客时经常会提出请客人去
泡温泉的建议。
从北到南，日本约有2,600多座温泉，有
7.5万家温泉旅馆。每年大约1.4亿人次使用温
泉，相当于日本的总人口数。对日本人来说
泡温泉是一种享受，更是生活中必不可少的

保留古朴的道路和建筑风格，一切都像小说
或者旧式电影的影像，早已换上浴衣的自己
也成了风景的一部分，淡淡的硫磺味道钻入
嗅觉。拿着毛巾，穿上木屐，伴着叽踏叽踏
的声音走出庭院来到温泉。大部分温泉都是
男女分开，旁边有牌子写着此温泉的温度和
功效，并仔细列出适宜人群。
如果事先跟酒店预约，有的温泉旅馆便
可以让宾客在规定的时间里和自己的家人一
起入浴，不受外人打扰。于是，备上一壶热
清酒，放在一个木桶里漂浮在水中，一边泡
澡，一边与爱人小酌。此情此景，你会感慨
日本人是何等懂得享受自然和生活。
有的温泉面对日本海太平洋，有些朝
向美丽的富士山，有些紧临溪流峡谷，有些
四周白雪皑皑。夜晚星光灿烂，清晨朝霞绚
丽，景色美不胜收！
提前预约
冬天的节假日是温泉旅馆最忙的时候，或携
妻带子，或甜蜜情侣，或老夫老妻。如果不
提前一个多月预约，就很有可能会扑个空，
败兴而归。温泉旅馆内的客房一般都是日本
式榻榻米，一个房间按照大小可以住2-6个
人，设施齐全，且有四季美食与酒水供应。
料理可以说是旅馆的招牌，旅馆老板们常常
为了推出与众不同的菜色绞尽脑汁，当地特
产美食、乡土料理、怀石料理等，从欣赏每
个不同造型的碗盏到品尝做工精美的食物。
温泉旅馆的价格一般都按照一个人来计
算，早餐晚餐加上住宿，当然还有随时无限制
泡温泉，低价的大约RMB600每人每晚，最高
的价格可达到RMB4,000。如果你去的是温泉
旅馆聚集的地带，就可以选择在一个旅馆居
住，然后再花上RMB30-60单独体验别家旅馆
的温泉，几乎所有的旅馆都欢迎非住宿温泉泡
澡的客人，当地的居民也几乎家家都引进泉
水，所以不难发现温泉地的居民们都有光滑和
健康的皮肤，也很少有关节炎患者。
独特的温泉文化
从日本的温泉文化可以感受到日本人生活的
仔细和认真。在进入浴池前，要先在池外将
身体冲洗干净，以洁净的身体入池。不能将
毛巾带进温泉池内，可将毛巾放在浴池边或
折起来顶在头上，也绝对禁止在温泉内洗头
或洗身体，不可以在温泉池内使用香皂或洗
发液，更不能大声喧哗。入浴的时候要用小
毛巾遮盖住身体的隐私部位。
在温泉旅馆中都有浴衣(日式)提供。穿浴
衣一定要左襟在上，如果穿反了则会被误解
为家中有丧事。据说这种穿法是受中国儒家
思想的影响，中国人认为“披发左衽”为蛮
夷之邦，日本人承袭这种思想，穿浴衣或者
和服一定要将衣领的方向在自己的右手边。
晚餐前、睡前、早上起床后各入浴一
次，是日本人的习惯，每次时间不算太长，
大约10-15分钟即可。日本人看待入浴的态度
就好像中国人对吃饭的态度一样，觉得是每
天必须的。日本电影和电视剧中常常出现主
人公泡在澡堂子里或者浴缸的镜头，中国人
看来有点儿不可思议，但日本人就觉得再自
然不过了。
人们通常认为日本是不停加班干活的民
族，其实他们也十分喜欢美好的享受。日本
的温泉消费也已经发展成了全球最大的自然
资源和文化消费。或许在日本有人并不了解
SPA是什么，但却不会有人不知道温泉，因为
温泉已经真实的，完完全全的渗透到全民生
活之中。
当然，也有一些特殊的温泉地将日本艺
妓文化和温泉结合在一起，为男宾提供日本
传统表演。许多小说电影会以发生在温泉地
的男女浪漫的爱情故事为主题展开描述，说
明日本的温泉已经是日本文化中不可分割的
一部分。电影《艺妓回忆录》中的三位主角
都由中国女演员来诠释，上映时多少令日本
人质疑了一下，因为传统日本艺妓的生活相
当复杂，恐不是外国人能理解透的。
灵性的源泉
日本公共浴池的历史可以追溯到公元前1550
年。在民间有许多关于沐浴和温泉的传奇故
事，其中一些是讲述受伤的动物在浸泡过温
泉后伤口会愈合，有些则将温泉看作是神灵
所赐的礼物，作为人们给予漂泊的僧人和游
者无私帮助的回报。
日本人也更愿意相信，他们所崇拜的一
千多年前大唐时代，四大美女之一杨贵妃，
秘密逃出了中国而留住于日本，原因当然是
因为她对温泉偏爱有加。
许多地方的温泉都弥漫着浓浓的人文气
质。有马温泉与日本战国时代第一个统一日
本领土的丰臣秀吉的关系颇深，丰臣秀吉曾
几次造访这里，并建造了专用的浴场——汤
殿馆。现在，汤殿馆的遗址已经规划成“太
阁汤殿馆”(丰臣秀吉的官名为“太阁” )展
示馆，开放展出。作家川端康成曾被伊豆的
温泉和秀丽景色深深吸引，就在伊豆当时名
为汤本馆的温泉旅馆中，以四周白雪皑皑的
温泉做背景，在这个美丽平静的“雪之乡”
创作了脍炙人口的《伊豆的舞女》。时至今
日，旅馆仍旧将川端康成当年写作的房间保
存完好。游客至此，仿佛能看到他通过窄窄
的楼梯缓缓挪动的身影。中国近代民主主义
的先行者孙中山先生在辛亥革命之前生活在
日本，曾到过几次箱根温泉乡，当地旅馆的
主人们就一直以接待过孙先生为荣。
外国游客们去日本旅游，也都会去泡温
泉。2005年日本政府为了推广日本旅游，在
中国大陆、香港、台湾分别做过市场调查。
在去日本的目的一栏，百分之八十的被调查
者提到了日本温泉。但是日本政府也是有顾
虑的，担心过多的外国游客会造成日本温
泉原有的特色被破坏。正是因为他们并不积
极地吸引外国游客，日本温泉才得以在自身
的经济体系和文化下保持一贯的风格。而很
多去过日本的外国游客都说，一旦进了温泉
地，你就会自然而然的入乡随俗，感受和欣
赏当地的风土人情：放轻脚步，轻声说话，
面带微笑，甚至像日本人那样鞠躬问候。日
本的温泉简直可以让一切得到净化。

Japan has been plagued by volcanoes
and earthquakes throughout its history,
but its simmering geology is also a gift
from nature: the precious natural resources of
thermal hot springs.
Frequent movements in the earth’s crust
have created thermal hot springs all across
Japan, from small ocean islands to hidden
spots in the mountains. Everywhere there
are skin-nourishing and therapeutic sento,
or public baths, and onsen, or hot springs.
Japan has a total of about 2,600 hot springs
and 75,000 hot spring hotels spread through-
out the country.
Every year, Japan’s hot springs welcome
about 140 million visitors. For the Japanese,
soaking in hot springs is considered to not
only be one of life’s greatest pleasures, but a
cultural obligation. Japan is known as a hot
springs nation, with each region having its
special styles, noted hot springs sites, unique
medicinal qualities.
Japan’s Nobel Prize laureate Yasunari
Kawabata set his book The Snow World in
the Uzawa Hot Springs near the city of Niigata
on Japan’s western coast, the most popular
winter hot springs vacation spot in Japan.
And the combination of hot springs and cold
weather is highly attractive.
Imagine yourself soaking in a steaming
43-degree Celsius pool as you watch the
snowflakes fluttering down. The snow falls
into the hot water, but you don’t feel the win-
ter chill even as you emerge from the water
naked, the inner heat steaming off you. You
feel purified.
A warm winter villageJapanese hot springs have a recorded his-
tory of over 1,000 years, and the springs are
steeped in folklore.
From the outside, Japanese hot spring
hotels usually appear very small and modest,
but once you enter, it is an altogether different
world. This reflects in a way the unassuming
nature of Japanese people, who generally
avoid ostentation and prefer to keep the truly
good things in life inside, hidden from the
gaze of the outside world.
Hot springs hotels often seem to be
constructed at random, and almost all are
built primarily of wood. The moisture and the
warmth of the wood heated in the afternoon
sun can emit a special fragrance closely asso-
ciated with the hot spring experience, and the
hotel’s manager, typically dressed in a tradi-
tional kimono, welcomes you with a smile as
you enter an elegant Japanese courtyard.
The setting is infused with the flavor of
Zen, the ancient philosophy that celebrates
the depth of simplicity. There may be sway-
ing lanterns and the faint tinkle of classical
samisen music in the background. Especially
during winter, a feeling of quiet warmth and
comfort will envelope you, as you get settled
in your tatami room and a kimono-clad wait-
ress serves you green tea with a smile. Then
you can go and enjoy the hot springs to your
heart’s content.
The noise of the city is far, far away from
the most famous and remote of the hot
springs. Simple and unsophisticated roads
and architectural styles are maintained, and it
often feels as though you are in a novel or an
old movie. You put on your yukata, a simple
kimono, and you become a part of the scene,
the scent of sulfur from the springs vaguely
apparent.

Pick up a towel, put on wooden sandals
and walk through to the inner courtyard, your
sandals click-clacking all the way. Then you
step into the hot spring. Most hot springs
segregate the sexes. Next to the pool, a sign
indicates the pool’s temperature and its spe-
cial medicinal properties.
The hotel can reserve a pool for you and
your companion or companions, so that oth-
ers will not disturb you. Waitresses in kimonos
bring a pot of hot sake in a wooden container
that floats on the water. Soak for a while,
and then sip some sake. The Japanese really
know how to enjoy nature and life. You feel
like a leaf floating on the surface of the water;
everything is so exquisite.
Some hot springs face the Pacific Ocean,
some face Mount Fuji, some face river valleys,
some are surrounded by snow, and above all
of them the night sky glistens, and the morn-
ing sunrise glows.
Hot springs etiquetteThe Japanese hot springs culture reveals just
how meticulous and serious the Japanese
people are when it comes to their daily life
and health.
You may not take your towel into the hot
spring pool; you leave it on the poolside, or
fold and place it on top of your head. Washing
your body or hair in the pool is strictly prohib-
ited, soaps, shampoos and other chemicals
are banned.
The yukata is the Japanese-style bathrobe
you will wear in the hot springs hotel. You
should wear it with the left lapel on top; oth-
erwise you will be misunderstood as having
suffered a death in the family. This tradition is
said to have come from Confucianism. The
Chinese traditionally believed that “messy hair
and the right lapel on top’’ were uncivilized,
and the marks of barbarian nations, and the
Japanese inherited this concept.
The Japanese attach the same importance
to taking a bath as the Chinese do to eating
rice. In fact, the Japanese are addicted to
baths – they also take them before dinner,
before going to bed, and after waking up in
the morning. Japanese movies and TV epi-
sodes frequently depict the main character
soaking in the bathtub or in a public bathing
pool. This may seem strange to people from
other cultures, including Chinese, but to the
Japanese, nothing could be more natural.
Many people have the impression that the
Japanese are a nation of workaholics, and it
is true. But they know how to enjoy life too.
Hot spring culture has become a huge indus-
try. Hot springs are fundamental to Japanese
life, and while Japanese people are only just
coming to understand the meaning of “spa”
in its modern international sense, the essence
of spa culture has in fact been integral to the
lives of Japanese people and Japanese cul-
ture for centuries.
In some places, hot springs are integrated
with geisha culture, with traditional hostess
services being offered to male guests. Popu-
lar Japanese books and movies describe
love stories and assignations occurring in hot
spring settings, and the movie Sayuri, featur-
ing several pretty Chinese actresses playing
Japanese Geishas, is the latest reflection of
this world in the realm of international culture.
Source of intellectual inspirationThe history of public bathing in Japan goes
back to the Jonmon era of BC.1550. Many of
Japan’s fairytales feature bathing, and many
of the hot springs have legends attached
to them. Some feature wounded animals
that are healed after soaking in a hot spring,
while others talk of gods and magical monks.
According to some legends, the hot springs
were gifts from the gods to the local people in
return for the aid they gave to itinerant monks
and other travelers.
Some hot springs make use of Yang Gui-
fei, an imperial concubine in the Tang Dynasty
more than a thousand years ago, who
according to history was strangled by rebels.
But according to some local legends, she
secretly escaped China and settled in Japan
because of her love of hot springs.
Hot springs fameSome hot springs are famous because histori-
cal figures and celebrities have stayed there.
For example, Aroma Onsen became famous
because Hideyoshi Toyotomi (1536-1593),
the military chief who united Japan, once vis-
ited and ordered the construction of a bath-
ing spot, Yu Dono Kan, for his personal use.
Today, the original site is an exhibition hall.
The Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata
in the 19th century, was deeply moved by
the landscape and hot springs of Izu on the
Izu Peninsula to the south of Mount Fuji. He
wrote his masterpiece “The Dancer of Izu”
in a hot springs hotel there. Even today, the
hotel Yumoto Kan, still looks after the room
where Yasunari Kawabata wrote and the
narrow stairs he climbed slowly in his advanc-
ing years. Kawabata also used hot springs
as the backdrop of his masterpiece, “Snow
Country”, which is full of the sense of peace
that comes from bathing in the snow. Dr. Sun
Yat-sen, the father of the Chinese republic,
lived in Japan before the revolution of 1911
which ended the Chinese empire. He once
visited the Hakone hot springs resort. Today,
the hotel owners are still proud of their historic
visitor.
Foreign tourists often come to Japan with
the express intention of visiting hot springs. A
survey conducted in 2005 by the Japanese
government in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan
indicated that 80% of the visitors saw hot
springs as being a key reason for visiting Japan.

中医刮痧疗法
刮痧疗法是传统中医疗法之一，
在明代郭志邃的《痧胀玉衡》
一 书 中 ， 已 经 完 整 记 载 了 刮
痧治病及各种刮痧方法。近代著名中医外治
专家吴尚先说“阳痧腹痛，莫妙以瓷调羹香
油刮背，盖五脏之系，咸于背，刮之则邪气
随降，病自松解”。大意为突发腹痛时，用
调羹抹油刮背，则五脏气顺，邪气排除，腹
痛缓解。我们很多人，小时候都有刮痧的经
历，尤其祖父母辈的人更是喜欢刮痧，大人
小孩感冒、轻微扭伤等，家中老人立即用刮
痧的方式来治疗。
刮痧，主要起到祛风散寒，活血通络的
效果，可以立即缓解外感风寒、寒湿入里、
肌肉损伤等，常用专门的刮痧板或调羹，抹
上油，顺经络走向，轻轻划动。民间还有揪
痧，就是用食指中指扭住某个部位，来回
揪。
但是，很多人对刮痧存有误解，认为刮
痧就是要用大力，而且一定要皮肤出现红色
血印，即所谓出痧，才能有功效，其实这是
错误的。如果用力过大，客人会感觉疼痛难
忍，这时皮肤出现血印，不是出痧，而是皮
下出血。如果客人体质较弱，或凝血功能不
好时，会引起休克，严重的会危及生命。
正确的刮痧方法，应该是刮痧板与皮肤
呈45度角，或者90度角，用力适中，以客人
不痛为原则，轻柔地沿经络方向滑动。
如果客人寒湿严重，即便没有什么感
觉，都会很快出现痧症，尤其是膀胱经上，
特别明显，痧为深红色。如果客人是扭伤，
在扭伤部位，出痧也会很明显，且颜色偏暗
红色。如果客人外感风寒，则痧症出的较
轻，为浅红色。如果客人没什么特别不适，
只是想疏通经络，则基本见不到痧。
刮痧不能每天刮，一般间隔一周以上较
为合适。痧症与皮下出血的最大区别在于，
痧症是点状的，即便严重时连成片，也有颜
色深浅之分，并且皮肤无压痛。皮下出血，
则是连片的，颜色越来越深，而且刮痧时，
痛感明显，皮肤有压痛。
另一个需要注意的是，一般只在人体的
阳面和阳经所过之处刮痧。中医的阳面即人体
背面，阳经也都是在背面行走。人体阴面和阴
经，即人体胸腹部，一般不主张刮痧。因为阴
脉主收敛，刮痧会导致伤气，如果在人体胸腹

刮痧是一种流传多年的中国传统自然疗法，用途广、效果好、简单易操作
部刮痧，会令受者感到烦躁不舒服。
夏季，雨水较多，比较潮湿，很多地区
有梅雨季节。适当每周刮痧一次，可以在疏
通经络的同时，预防暑湿感冒，缓解疲劳。
刮痧时，如果配上舒缓舒肌的精油，效果会
更好。
刮痧和文化差异
刮痧是中国传统的自然疗法之一，它是以中
医皮部理论为基础，用牛角、玉石等工具在
皮肤相关部位刮拭，以达到疏通经络、活血
化瘀之目的。中国民间医学传统认为：皮肤
出现红点如粟，以指抚摸皮肤感到稍有阻碍
的疹点，是疾病在发展变化过程中反应在皮
肤的一种表现，是临床许多疾病的共同症
候。在英文中，通常会被叫做“Spooning”(
用勺子)或者“Coining”(用硬币)；它也有一
个非常形象化的法语名称“tribo-effleurage”(
摩擦疗法)。
在越南语中，刮痧被叫做“cao gió”，
大致译为“祛风”。在越南文化中，感冒或
发烧是叫做“trúng gió”，意为“得风寒”
。此词来源于《伤寒论》(AD200-205)，一
本由张仲景于东汉年间编写的、关于由风寒
引起的疾病的书籍。就像大多数的亚洲国家
一样，中国的医药科学对越南有着深远的影
响，尤其是在公元5-7世纪。在越南本地人和
海外越南人之间，“cao gió”是一种非常常
见的疗法，且有很多变体，如在疗程中使用
油膏和硬币在皮肤上施力。还有一种是将硬
币插入煮熟鸡蛋的蛋黄中；然后用布将鸡蛋
包裹起来，在额头(如果发烧的话)及身体其他
部位的皮肤上来回擦。疗法结束后，当硬币
从鸡蛋中取出时，会呈现黑色。
刮 痧 在 印 度 尼 西 亚 作 为 一 种 传 统 的
爪 哇 技 法 也 有 应 用 ， 被 称 为 “ k e r i k a n ”
或“kerokan”，意为“刮的技巧”。在普通
民众中，它作为民间疗法使用非常广泛。
略有不同的是，在刮痧中使用的是硬币
的边缘而不是瓷器。这样的疗法是被认作“
民间医学”技术的。在许多亚洲国家，如越
南、柬埔寨，以及一些移民社区内，人们在
自己的家中就可以采用这样的“硬币疗法”
。例如在加州奥兰治县医院的保健医生经常

切都源自文化及医疗认知的巨大差异。

Scraping Your Way to Health
About 500 years ago, a noted doc-
tor in the Ming Dynasty named
Guo Zhisui compiled a book which
included a description of a treatment he called
“Gua Sha”, literally the scraping away of fever.
He listed out the diseases which Gua Sha can
cure, and modern science to a large extent
supports his claims for this treatment.
There are many Chinese people who had
the experience of Gua Sha from childhood,
especially people from the generation of our
grandfathers and grandmothers. In some
households, if a person catches a cold or
gets a sprain, old people will use Gua Sha to
cure these diseases immediately.
Wu Shang, a modern medical expert, has
said that if there is pain in one’s belly, it is
helpful to apply sesame oil to the skin on the
back to help make the body’s “Qi” run more
smoothly in the internal organs and to remove
bad “wind”.
There are specific tools used for Gua Sha,
such as the Gua Sha board or spoon. After
application of oils on the skin, people gently
rub the skin according to the meridian chan-
nels. Among ordinary people, there is another
similar treatment named Jiu Sha, which refers
to the use of the middle finger and forefinger
to repeatedly squeeze the skin and pull it
away from the body.
The main effects of Gua Sha are to
remove wind and coldness and to make the
blood and the meridians run smoothly. It can
assist in curing such ailments as colds, fever,
shivering from dampness, or muscle injury. In
many healthcare centers, Gua Sha is com-
bined with essential oils to make the treat-
ment more effective.
There are people who think that it is
best to perform Gua Sha with very vigorous
strokes, and that the appearance of clear
scraping marks on the skin is a sign that the
treatment is effective. But this is a misun-
derstanding of the Gua Sha treatment. If the
Gua Sha is a Chinese traditional remedy passed down through the generations which involves scraping the skin to cleanse the body. It is easy to learn and to do
strokes are too strong, guests may feel pain.
And if the guests are weak in personal phy-
sique, strong Gua Sha treatment can cause
shock.
The right way to do Gua Sha is to use
tools with the appropriate strength to rub the
skin according to the meridian channels at
an angle of 45 or 90 degrees. If there is great
dampness in the body, scraping marks will
appear immediately on the skin. If the guest
gets sprained, there will also be obvious
marks of Sha of a dark red color on the skin
or the sprained part. And if the guest has a
cold, the color of the marks will probably be
a light red. However, if the guest doesn’t feel
any discomfort and only takes Gua Sha treat-
ment to dredge the meridian channels, there
will be no apparent marks left.
Gua Sha is not a treatment which can be
used every day, and taking Gua Sha once a
week is probably best.
Another important thing to note is that
usually Gua Sha is used on skin on the Yang
side and body parts which Yang meridian
channels run through. In TCM, the Yang
side and body parts which the Yang merid-
ian channels run through usually refer to the
back.
Meanwhile the Yin side and the Yin merid-
ian means the chest, which is not appropriate
for Gua Sha treatments. The function of the
Yin meridian is convergence, so Gua Sha
can cause damage to the Qi. When a person
takes Gua Sha on the chest, he/she will tend
to feel uncomfortable and irritable.
In summer, it tends to be damp in China,
and this is the perfect time to take Gua Sha
treatment once a week to make the meridians
run smoothly. Meanwhile, it can also prevent
cold of heat or dampness and relieve fatigue.
Gua Sha and Cross-cultural Con-fusionGua Sha literally "to scrape away fever" in
Chinese (more loosely, "to scrape away dis-
ease by allowing the disease to escape as
sandy-looking objects through the skin"), is a
form of folk medicine. Sometimes referred to
as "spooning" or "coining" by English speak-
ers, it has also been given the descriptive
French name, "tribo-effleurage".
It is also used in Vietnam and Indonesia.
There is a traditional Javanese technique
known as kerikan (scraping technique) or ker-
okan, which is widely used, as a form of "folk"
medicine.
One form of Gua Sha uses the edges of
coins rather than porcelain items is practiced
as a "folk medicine" technique. Individuals
practice this "coining" amongst their own
family members in many Asian cultures such
as Vietnam, in Cambodia, and in their respec-
tive immigrant communities abroad. For
example, health care practitioners in hospitals
in California routinely see evidence of coining
among hospitalized Vietnamese patients.
There was a Movie called “ Gua Sha” in
2000 made in Hong Kong that talked about a
Chinese grandfather who gave his grandson a
Gua Sha treatment in the United States, and
was taken to court to explain that this was not
child abuse.
