一、準備篇(請就出國前準備、簽證之辦理、接機等準備事項進行陳述)I was back in my home country, Japan during summer holiday so I went to France directly from
Japan. I left Japan on 27th of August to arrive in Paris via Germany so I could I arrive in La
Rochelle on 28th. Because the welcome day of the course I chose, which was ESC1, was on
29th of August. Out of all the preparation for this experience, I think preparing Visa was one of
the most difficult part for me. It was because for me being an exchange student from Taiwan but
being Japanese. I had a Japanese friend who was going to go on exchange program from Japan
to France and she had no problem going through the system Campus France. But for me, they
took quite a long time to go through my documents especially the confirmation of school part. I
had to write emails again and again and they kept saying they are almost finished. I couldn’t call
because the announcement was all in French too. It was also difficult because the French
Ambassador office for Visa was only in Tokyo but I am from Osaka and since I had a part time
job almost every day it was very difficult on schedule and was inconvenient if I had any other
problem. Because it wasn’t the first time to go abroad or go study abroad, I think it was easier
on me what to take and preparing myself. But because it was first time to go to Europe and
many people has warned me how dangerous it is in Europe I was little nervous in the train on
the way to La Rochelle. Also because I have only being to the countries who speaks English I
did have some difficulties at train station but other than that was all fine.
二、學業篇(請就選課程序及狀況、上課情形、學習成效等事項進行陳述)
I had bit of problem choosing classes because some classes wasn’t the same as I thought and the
system of school was completely different. In Group Sup de Co they have different schedule
each week where in our school NTPU has a set time table for a semester. At start it was quite
confusing because you have one subject and you might not have the same subject till three
weeks after. But when I got hang of it, it was actually quite convenient since I didn’t have full
credits I could go on trip from Thursday or something.
On the first week of school, we ESC1 students had the first subject, Business Game. I think it
was most special subject that I took. I chose English track in ESC1 but in this subject we
English track and French track were put together. We all were separated into a group of 5 to 6
people and were given which part we have to fight within 4 big categories like financial and
products etc. According to our coordinator last year for international students, they were all put
into the same group but because they wanted to give us a chance to know local students we were
all put into different group. Thanks to that, yes we had a chance to know local students and I
actually made one great friend but we had big problem, Language barrier. The business game
itself was already very challenging so there were no time to chitchat. Then what happens was
that they will discuss in French which all of international students felt very uncomfortable
about. Most of us exchange students only knew few words. Sometimes French students tried to
explain in English but there were no time in business game to discuss and explain at the same
time. So it was quite difficult for us international students to participate a lot even if we wanted
too. And the business game lasted whole week from morning to night so it was quite difficult
and challenging time for us international students. But it was also very good experience.
Other subjects, some being different from what I thought but basically was quite interesting.
Although the school wasn’t very close to where I lived it was quite nice to go to school.
三、社團篇(請就參加之社團、課餘活動等經驗分享)At first of the semester I was considering to participate in clubs like dancing or something else. I
went to check them out with my international friends and all but we did not get into them at the
end for a couple of reason. One was the fee for it. There was a club called BDS in the school
who organized many classes and sport activities. They had many kinds which we were excited
about because they had things like normal sports to even surfing activities. But you had to pay
for this club first and then to the class as well and they didn’t have any offers for one year or
half the year they only had for full school time offer. I cannot remember how much it was but it
was not cheap at all if you are only here for one or two semester. Second was the inconvenience
of location. Some activities were held in the gym nearby and some were in the courts
somewhere in the city and they were very far from the center. Firstly for the gym, it was another
10 minutes by bus from the school and for people who lived far from the center as well was way
too far. Considering the fact that you don’t have school every day and also you don’t have same
time schedule every week it was very difficult for us exchange students to join the activities. So
most of us international students joined an association called BDI. They sometimes held a
session with some teachers and all of us to eat and chat and also they provided many special
offers and information about school activities. So that is exchange students whose only there for
such a short period of time could also participate school events although we are not in any
proper associations in the school.
四、日常生活篇(請就交換學校之生活環境、住宿、交通、飲食等事項進行陳述)My exchange program life was very satisfying because of my great friends but the home stay
did not turn out so great. When I applied for it I made it clear that I cannot speak French at all.
The documents I received about the host family I’m going to stay with, it said they are husband
and a wife and one cat in the house but when I arrived I got told by the wife that they got
divorced and they don’t live together anymore and also later I found out that she cannot speak
English at all it was her husband who could speak English. On the next day of arrival I got
introduced her boyfriend and during the stay she basically went out every night with her
boyfriend. On the first month I had the breakfast and the dinner plan but I changed to non-meal
and cooking plan the next month. Because of that reason and also because she happened to just
leave stuff to eat in the fridge and was sometimes same things over and over. I think I would ask
to change a homestay house earlier if there weren’t for an adorable cat and a beautiful big house.
Because I love animal and that cat was very friendly he even cuddled up and slept with me I was
pretty satisfied with the environment I had. So from second months I had pretty good life having
good distance from host family and can eat whatever I want but it was little disappointing
because biggest reason that I chose La Rochelle was because of home stay program. Also the
house was not the closest to the center which was also little inconvenient. It was 20 minutes’
walk from the house to the center and 5 minutes by a bus but because there weren’t many buses
and you had to take another bus to school and if you walk, it would take another 30 minutes. But
even if I took buses you had to consider the time of buses and between two buses I had to leave
40 minutes before to the school.
五、文化交流篇(請就與當地及其他外國學生或民眾之文化交流經驗分享)Our welcome day, It was the first welcome day of the school so school was very empty, but on
the same day the tourism course were there too so we all got to know each other which was very
nice because they turned out to be great friends at last. Because we were the first ones to arrive
we got to know more people by extending our community through friends and friends of friends.
I got to make friends from all over the world like Mexico, Italy, Germany, Latvia, Canada,
Finland, India, and Brazil and of cause France. But out of all I got close to two Mexican girls
who was also on an exchange program and took the same course. We International students all
were very close and was also very close to some French students too but because difference in
the courses or the time schedule we had we couldn’t always all hang out together. But I got to
make two precious friend who I can call them best friends and also many other great friends
who I wish to meet again so I was very lucky to go on the exchange. I had my birthday during
the stay in France as well and I got celebrated by a surprise party by more than 10 friends which
I will never forget.
On the other side, I had quite a lot of culture shock when I went to France. The way they
provide service is different. Food of cause is very different. I was amazed by how much cheese
they have! And biggest one I would say is smoking. At school in every interval all the students
and even the professors go outside to have a smoke and have a coffee. We also have smoking
habit in Japan if you compare to almost none in Taiwan but not as much as European culture.
But because I’m quite used to living in different culture I enjoyed them all.
六、費用篇(請就參加交換計畫曾支付的費用、每月生活支出及獎學金進行陳述)I haven’t applied for the scholarship because it was only for Taiwanese students and also not in
France because they didn’t offer for one semester so I worked hard during my vacations while I
was in Japan. I think I didn’t do so badly on the budget. At first my plan was only to use
200000NTD but in the total I used about 250000NTD for everything including home stay fees,
food, transportation, and trips. I didn’t need to pay for the flight to France because we bought it
with mileage points which I was very lucky. Listening to other exchange students some people
took way more and still traveled less. It was my very first to the Europe and because I know I
cannot go to Europe anytime soon again so I wanted to travel a lot. In the end I went to 10
countries including Portugal, Spain, UK, Germany, Italy, Vatican, and Check republic, Belgium,
Netherland and France of cause. I also went to many cities in France as well like Bordeaux,
Toulouse, Annecy, Lyon, Colmar, Strasbourg, St-Malo, Rennes, Mt St Michel, Tours, Blois, and
Paris . I went on trips with many different group of people which was also very nice. Traveled
with my Mexican friends, Japanese friends, French friends, Taiwanese friends etc. On the
budget I tried everything I could to lower the budget so what I did was to save money for the
food budget while cooking by myself and also during the trip. Luckily my friends had quite
similar thoughts like me so we all stayed in hostels etc. Also thanks to NTPU having many
exchange students, I got to go visit my friends who used to come to NTPU for an exchange
program. They invited me to stay and show me around as well which I could experience another
amazing trips!
