After Randwick scored early Wainuiomata then took con-trol of the game, dominat-ing throughout the fi rst half, deserving their 20-4 lead at halftime.

The trend continued in the second half, with Wainuio-mata’s strong lead never being threatened.

Tama Ferguson was named player of the day, after what

was an extremely strong per-formance throughout the game.

Captain Tanara Haenga ac-cepted the trophy for the Senior 1 division but was extremely gracious towards his opposi-tion.

“Thanks Randwick for a great, tough game, it was great to play you guys in the fi nal,” he says.

“You wont have to play

against half of these ugly guys again however as they will be playing the Masters Grade next year.”

As Tanara mentioned, many of the Wainuiomata side will not be playing in a competitive grade next year, all will be sorely missed by the team and the fans.

The team secured Wainuio-mata’s only trophy this season,

although the Premiers did make it to the fi nal as well.

As normal when it comes to Wainuiomata League matches, the fans were as into the match as the players were, something that drives the team.

“It was great to see a good turnout of fans here, it wouldn’t be the same without you guys yelling at us throughout the game,” says Tanara.

Wainuiomata Indigenous Lions win the Senior 1 Championship

August is Ancestry month at Public Libraries around the Hutt Valley, and people are encouraged to get down and learn about how they can discover their family history.

On Friday last week, people were shown how to access tools that could be useful in complet-ing a family tree, all of which can be accessed at the library.

Clark Stiles was showing the

small group of people, who all were given examples on where to fi nd information about fam-ily on the internet and other ways.

“The library is a great place to learn about all this, we have nearly everything you need here to discover about your family history,” he says.

“Everything I have shown will help sort out your family tree.”

One example he gave was

searching on Births, Deaths and Marriages, whose web-site is http://www.dia.govt.nz/Births-deaths-and-marriages.

On this people have the option of ordering death certifi cates, which can give a lot of infor-mation about a person, much more than can be obtained on the internet.

“It is worth doing if you are extremely interested in know-ing more about a person,” Clark says.

He also gave the option of visiting the cemeteries website, which can be even more useful than Births, Deaths and Mar-riages.

“It has much more informa-tion about the person, where their plot is being one example, and it is a free resource.”

He also gave the option on looking on Electoral Rolls, which can help you fi nd out where a person lived when they were voting.

Next week is a big week for local boxer Raymond Seumanu, who travels to Brisbane to take part in the Australian Golden Gloves.

Raymond will be competing in the elimination tournament, pitting himself against the best that Australia and New Zealand can offer, a challenge he is looking forward to.

“I am proud to be doing it, and proud to be representing New Zealand and Wainuiomata,” he says.

The competition will be another step up for the 13 year old who has already carved out an impressive record in the sport.

There as a distinct possibility that Raymond could be put in a bout against the number one boxer in Australia at his age grade, although this more excites Raymond than anything.

His coaches and family have all told him that whoever he faces to just go for it, and to make sure he is on top of his game, throughout the entire tournament.

Head Coach of the Wainuiomata Box-ing Club Craig Bennett says he wishes that all three of the coaches wish they could go as well, but none are able to attend.

“It is a money problem, we can’t afford to go, we would have loved to, and I will be waiting for that phone call saying he won,” says Craig.

“It would be a massive achievement being crowned Australian Golden Gloves Champion, probably as big as you could get at his age.”

Craig and the rest of the coaches have upped the intensity of Raymond’s Train-ing in an effort to make sure that he is

Raymond off to battle Australia’s fi nest

physically and mentally ready for the tournament.

This includes a lot of fi tness work, something that is key for the elimination style tournament.

Other boxers at the Wainuiomata Gym see this as great inspiration to make it to the same level in the future.

Jared Paku, who is also on the radar of the National selectors, says that he wants to be in Raymond’s shoes next year.

“It is really cool to see, it makes me want to be going there as well.”

Raymond jetting off to Australia is not

the only good news coming out of the club, coaches Rico Seumanu and Rob Cameron both attained their judges’ cards, meaning they can now judge bouts at tournaments.

This is something that Rico was always interested in, and with his son doing well in boxing it is making him want to be even more involved than he is now.

Rob has also been selected as the manager of the Hutt Valley team that will be travelling to nationals later in the year.

TOP TEAM: Craig Bennett, Raymond Seumanu, Rob Cameron and Rico Seumanu are all taking the Wainuiomata Boxing Club to places it hasn’t gone for a long time.

Wainuiomata’s own soup kitchen, the Happiness Inn is back open at its new location.

After having to move from its previ-ous site at the Life City Church they have now set up camp at the Louise Bilderbeck Hall on the Main Road.

The team is still looking for help, whether it is man power or through donations of food and drink, with help from the community they are hoping to open more often.

The normal opening times are Tuesday and Thursday Mornings from 10am to 1.15pm.

Last week Police executed two search warrants at Wainuiomata addresses, in relation to a person suspected of unlawfully possessing rearms.

This required an armed police pres-ence throughout the duration of the warrants.

At one address Police located a large cannabis growing operation, enquir-ies are continuing. If you hear or see anything that

you feel requires a police presence please ring 111.

Six people are in hospital after two crashes within minutes happened on the Coast Road just after 11am on Sunday.

Two people were trapped after the initial crash and taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Three others were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Shortly after a motorcyclist crashed, was reported injured and got taken to hospital after losing control on the same stretch of road.

Police say the two crashes could be connected.

The new disabled car park, out in front of Clive’s Chemist on Queen Street is getting used by non-disabled people, and it is outraging residents.

The Wainuiomata News has received multiple letters about this, saying that it is just laziness on part of these people that park in the spot.

Wainuiomata Ward Coun-cillors, Campbell Barry and Margaret Willard are both

disappointed that this is hap-pening.

“A couple of months ago I was involved in the Com-munity Board decision to approve the disabled car park outside Clive’s Chemist,” he says.

“At the time we received information and evidence that made it very clear that the car park was needed for those with a disability and for many of our elderly who have limited mobility.”

He agreed with one of the letters that was sent in, saying Don’t be so tired and get in a little exercise by walking some of the distance.

Councillor Willard agrees saying people should think about how it affects others.

“It is certainly unfair of able-bodied people to take up spaces reserved for people who can't walk far or easily, and they should think about how they would feel if they or family members were in

the same situation,” she says.“People should get the exer-

cise in by walking the extra distance, and not be so lazy.”

The best thing to do if you see it happening or if it affects you is to take the number and description of the car and phone council on 570 6666.

Both Councillors are mak-ing parking wardens aware of this, and they will be keeping an eye out if anyone is park-ing in the areas.

Disabled Car Park getting abused

The Public Service Associa-tion (PSA) says the Govern-ment’s latest Administrative and Support Services Bench-mark (BASS) report shows the cost of poor workplace culture and HR practice in the public service is rising.

The latest BASS report shows nearly 30% of public service staff left their roles within the first 12 months, well above the international

benchmark of 8%.Erin Polaczuk, PSA national

secretary, says "High staff turnover leads to reduced morale, less experience and higher costs for continuous recruitment,"

"These results show the Government needs to wake up and start putting serious effort into creating high-engagement workplace culture across the public service.”

She says that there are some instances where this is not the case however, although it depends on the situation of the workplace.

"Workplaces where peo-ple feel engaged have better results, lower turnover and higher morale.”

"The PSA is passionate about public services, and we invite State Services Minister Paula Bennett to work with us to

improve workplace culture.”"Good workplace culture

means everybody wins - work-ers are happier, they produce better work and agencies save money," says Erin Polaczuk.

Many of these people that are leaving the jobs, are strug-gling to get into other work, which leads to many experts saying to not leave your job unless you have another lined up.

The cost of poor public service workplace culture on the rise

Another famous Wainuiomata Resident has come through, Former Black Sox Captain Rhys Casley.

The Born and Bred Wainuiomata Native played over 75 tests for the Black Sox, including captaining them in the World Championships four years ago, hitting a home run in the 3-1 fi nals victory.

He won many awards over his time playing softball, and also showed his all-round skills by playing for Wel-lington in AFL.

Wainuiomata High School showed the entire commu-nity what school spirit was all about last week.

The school hosted its annual spirit week, where activities were planned every lunch time, in an effort to increase and maintain school spirit.

Activities included a Weara-ble Arts competition, Students versus Teachers Basketball game, a Marshmallow eating contest and a Quiz.

Also there was a mufti day every day, which came with a theme like nerds, Pajamas and Famous and Fictional.

All the staff were very happy with how the week went, and every event was well attended on each day.

On Friday the Students ver-

sus Teachers Basketball game happened, and both sides enjoyed the chance to show off in front of the rest of the school.

Although some of the teach-ers clearly struggled with the sport, they somehow managed to upstage the students by using some interesting tactics along the way.

The Wearable Arts competi-tion was great with many different styles of costumes coming out, including a fully paper tuxedo.

Some of the students say they really enjoy Spirit Week as it is a break from the normal school year.

“It is a fun chance to have some fun at school, every-one here enjoys it, the school seems like such a fun place when this is on.” they say.

Wainuiomata High School has spirit

Wainuiomata News reader Alan Howells is hoping that summer is on the way after seeing a pair of Rosella’s in his yard.

The brightly colored, broad tailed parakeet is native to South Eastern Australia, and are extremely common over much of the North Island.

The birds can be easily identi-fi ed by their bright red heads with white cheeks, they feed on

seeds and many fruit varieties. The birds forage in pairs dur-

ing breeding season, so these two spotted in Alan’s garden could be a mating pair.

The Wainuiomata News en-courages anyone who has spot-ted some rare birds or wildlife in the area to take some photos and send them in.

Hopefully these two birds have signified that summer is just around the corner.

Resident hopes Rosella’s signify the beginning of summer

SCHOOL YARD FUN: Everyone had a great time during Spirit Week, including on Friday when they had a Students versus Teachers Basketball Game.

Q: Do you think Wainuiomata is given a fair go by the Council?

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street.

Craig Bennett, Wainuiomata

They could do more to help all the sports clubs, all of them including darts, karate, boxing, I would like to see the council help out more.

Rico Seumanu,Wainuiomata

Probably not as much as we would like them to, there is a lot of talent over here, they could invest more in it.

Sundar Arunagirl,WoburnThey could do more, due to a smaller population I don’t think more shops would help as it is not as busy, I do like it over here though.

Meda McKenzie,Lower Hutt

I don’t live here but I think the council could do more to encourage growth in the community.

Akash Solanki, Wainuiomata

Yes, I think they look after the place.

Rob Cameron, Wainuiomata

In some ways they do, in some they don’t, us at the boxing club have had to go out and look for help, they have never come and seen what they can do for us.

WoburnSundar Arunagirl,

I agree with Ron Mil-burn there’s too many people tak-ing disabled people for granted.

As a caregiver driving my dad around who has a card it really amazes me to see igno-rant drivers park where they like. I have said to a few people in the past “if you don't have a dis-ability get out of that space” 1 out of 5 gave me abuse, I called one of them a “lazy ignorant agro

individual who can't walk 20 meters”, he gave me the fi ngers as he walked away towards the mall.

Another thing is lots of peo-ple don't know how to park their cars, some take up two spac-es, some park on very strange an-gles. Parking is meant to be part of getting your licence, like hill starts etc. Some can't re-verse properly, some people

shouldn't be driving at all, full stop.

I don’t leave my ca r in any strange angles, I line it up and check my mirrors, both sides.

Why can't people do that? So many people are too damn

lazy to correct their parking. In the future if you see a dis-

ability park unattended keep going until you fi nd an empty

one without a wheel chair sign. I f someone tel ls you to

move your car away from that park don't get nasty, unless you have a disability card. Anyone who has one has the right to get you towed away.

If I see any agro dudes giving a disabled person a hard time I will challenge them (in a legal way).

P.S The Government should

make it a law that if people can't park properly they don't pass their licence.

The mall car park is a prime example of bad parking.

I don't leave my vehicle until it's parked correctly!

Good on you Ron, you have my support.

New Zealand women are being encour-aged to consider their health and make cer-vical screening a priority this September, as part of Cervical Screening Awareness Month.

The focus of Cervical Screening Aware-ness Month is to highlight the importance of smear tests and to motivate more Kiwi women to book in for screening.

“It’s a short and simple procedure that has a proven ability to save lives. We recommend screening every three years to reduce the risk of bad cells developing into something that could potentially be life-threatening,” says Jane Piper, General Manager, Well Women and Family Trust.

Shajn Tanirau was 22 when she learned her results were abnormal. It was her fi rst smear test, which she only considered after her local marae encouraged her to make an appointment.

It was a procedure that unbeknown to her, would lead to her recovery and ultimately, save her life.

“At fi rst I thought I’d feel violated, but Kokiri Marae told me the consequences of not going. I went in and as it turned out, I had abnormal cells.

“I had the recommended treatment and I am now in the clear. I’m so thankful that I

made the appointment early enough,” says Tanirau.

Tanirau is now conscious of health screen-ing recommendations and encourages other women to get regular cervical smears. “We’ve lost a lot of women to it [cervical cancer] and don’t need to lose any more.”

Cervical cancer is one of the most prevent-able forms of cancer and screening every three years can reduce the risk of develop-ing it by up to 90 per cent.

Jane Piper advises that “By having regular smears, there is a very high chance any abnormal cells will be detected and treated before they become cancerous.”

The National Screening Unit is encour-aging more women, like Shajn Tanirau, to recognise the importance of cervical screening, and effectively reduce the num-ber of New Zealand women who develop cervical cancer.

New Zealand has one of the best screening programmes in the world, with the number of women who die from cervical cancer dropping by 60 per cent since 1990[1].

To fi nd out when your next smear is due, either call your GP or free-phone 0800 729 729. For more information visit www.cervicalscreening.govt.nz.

Chris Bishop, National List MP based in the Hutt Valley, has welcomed news that six Hutt Valley companies will receive funding from Callaghan In-novation to employ students over the 2015/16 summer break, allowing them to gain important work experience in New Zealand’s fast-growing hi-tech sector.

R&D Student Experience Grants allow students with science, technol-ogy, engineering, design, or business qualifi cations to advance their skills and understanding of commercial R&D within New Zealand companies. The six Hutt companies are Formway Design Ltd, Tekron InternationalLtd, Times-7 Holdings Ltd, CRL Energy Ltd, Nuenz Limited and Pertronic Industries Ltd.

“I’ve been privileged to visit some of the great Hutt companies receiving these grants and it’s fantastic that students will be based there over the upcoming summer break, upskilling themselves and gaining hands-on, practical, business experience.

“These grants are a win/win for eve-ryone involved. The grants help keen, qualifi ed Kiwis obtain work experience in New Zealand’s fast-growing hi-tech sector. The companies also gain by em-ploying smart, ambitious young people to help advance their R&D projects.”“This is a further step on the road to

developing the Hutt Valley into ‘Tech-nology Valley’, where science, technol-ogy and high value manufacturing drive economic growth, new jobs and higher wages for Hutt residents.

To achieve that, we need many more of our young people becoming interested in science and technology, thinking about them as career options, and considering further higher-level study.

We also need young people getting ex-perience in R and D intensive companies – which this grant scheme is all about.“I’m also pleased that Callaghan is de-veloping a process that better matches businesses with graduates who have completed their study.

It’s good news for the Hutt that an improved, on-demand R&D Career Grant will be available later this year.Through the Business Growth Agenda, the National-led Government is back-ing the Hutt’s science and technology focus, through programmes such as Callaghan Innovation and its various R and D grant programmes, including support for Creative HQ’s new “Light-ning Lab” digital accelerator.

More information on the eligibil-ity criteria for students and busi-nesses, timelines and how to apply for Student Grants can be found at www.callaghaninnovation.govt.nz

Wainuiomata is about to get hit by some Misty Frequencies when Che Fu plays at the Fitzroy Tavern.

Che Fu became famous thanks to being a part of the band Supergroove, releasing two albums with the band before leaving to try his hand at a solo career.

Within weeks of Fu leaving Super-groove, he had a number one singe with the song Chains, which protested French Nuclear testing in the Pacifi c.

The song also won three Tui’s Single of the year, Best male vocalist, and Best songwriter.

This marked the beginning of Fu's solo career and brought prominence to Hip Hop in New Zealand.

In 1998 Fu released his debut album 2b S.Pacific, the album went double

platinum and spawned four top-ten hits, which was unheard-of for a local hip hop artist at the time.

Fu released his follow-up album Navigator in 2001, debuting at number one and generating triple platinum sales.

At the 2002 New Zealand Music Awards, Fu took home fi ve tuis, Single of the year for Fade Away, Album of the year, Top male vocalist, Best R&B / Hip hop album, and Best music video.

That same year, Fu received the APRA Silver Scroll for his single Misty Frequencies.

Fu's next album Beneath the radar was released in 2005, led out by singles 2D and Lightwork.Che Fu will be at the Fitzroy Tavern Saturday 29th August. For information about the gig please contact the Fitzroy Tavern.

The Wainuiomata Rugby Club Pre-mier Reserves failed to win their fi nal in a tough encounter.

The 22-20 loss to Oriental Rongotai, was a disappointing result for the Wai-nuiomata side, who would have been hoping to get a win from the fi xture.

The loss means that no men’s side won a trophy this year in the club, the only trophy won was the Division Two wom-ens title that was won a few weeks ago.

The women’s side were a bright spot for the club in the second round of the season, they went through the round

unbeaten, and put on some massive scores against their opposition.

This included a 49-0 thumping of Poneke in the fi nal, after two massive results against Johnsonville 130-0 in the fi rst game, followed by an amazing 188-0 victory a couple of weeks after.

After a slow start the Colts ended up the season in good form, although they will be disappointed with their semifi nal loss to Oriental Rongotai, going down 49-5 at home.

The Under 85kg side had an up and down season, although they put together some great form in some of their games.

The Premier Reserves had a good, if

not great, second half of the season, the fi nals loss will be disappointing, but they did show some improved form in the second round.

The Premiers will be disappointed with the season, after coming into the season full of hope that they could fi nally break their luck in the Jubilee Cup, but it was not meant to be.

Injuries played a major part in the disappointing fi rst round, and the lack of form continued over into the second round.

The team will be hoping for better things next year, and should expect that with the squad they have.

Sports with Aaron Meredith

It is hard to believe that last Saturday was the last time that we will see Richie McCaw play in New Zealand.I know there are many other players in the same boat as Richie but none are as well respected and as much loved as the great number seven.I’m not sure if he is our greatest ever All Black, I never saw Colin Meads play, but in the modern times, you would struggle to think of anyone better. He played for the jersey, he never chased the money overseas, he was always loyal to Canterbury, The Crusaders and The All Blacks. We only have up to seven matches left to see our great number seven, hopefully at the end of those games Richie will be holding the World Cup up, that would be the perfect send o .The performance the All Blacks put on the eld on Saturday should not have been surprising, there was too much motivation.First there were many other players playing their last game in New Zealand, there was the fact that they had lost the week before, and then it was their leader’s last game. And just to prove how much of an impact Richie had on the country, when was the last time you heard of a Cantabrian getting a standing ovation at Eden Park?

A legend bids farewell
