Since arriving at the school I have appreciated the expertise they offer ensuring the school has quality administrative systems; their commitment to supporting learning of individual students and classes in specialist areas; and the important role they play as the first point of contact between the school and our families. I would like to thank the Hospitality students who worked diligently in helping us acknowledge the administrative and support staff with a fantastic lunch. They demonstrated great competencies through a real life learning experience. I hope some of their families have had the opportunity to benefit from this learning being taken home- the food and service was sensational! Over the last week we had some large amounts of rain and I would like to recognise the maturity of our young people in the way they acted to keep dry and warm. I would also like to acknowledge several acts of kindness and community spirit from our students that I have heard about over the past week, including a couple to do with mobile phones that had been found/ dropped. The school executive have been analysing student report comments to consider ways we continuously improve our support for learning. Following the Y12 Information evening held this week, Ms Kirwin and Mr Towney have started to follow up their offer to meet with individual students and families to build a shared support program for our senior students. This is a terrific initiative that provides an opportunity for a strong connection to be built between the school and family to personalise support for our senior students. As part of the formal assemblies held over the last two weeks I have asked students to reflect on the important question about “Why is school important to me?” I thought I would share two responses from students that I had a chance to discuss this question with using a process called the Five Whys. Why is school important to me? (Why 1): to gain a better education for greater opportunities Why is this important? (Why 2): to become successful in life Why is this important? (Why 3): to use your knowledge to the best of your ability Why is this important? (Why 4): to do something that is important to the community and yourself Why is this important? (Why 5): to make the most of the opportunities that have been given to us. Why is school important to me? (Why 1): it gives up life skills and knowledge Why is this important? (Why 2): so we can go into the world with the necessary skills for jobs and lifestyle Why is this important? (Why 3): so we can make a good life Why is this important?

An explanation of Mathematics Stages 5.1, 5.2, 5.3

Stage Past and present experience in Stages 4 and 5

Future direction for Stage 6 and beyond

5.3 #

These are optional topics which contain challenging material for students who will complete all of Stage 5.3 during Years 9 and 10.

These topics are intended for students who are aiming to study mathematics at the very highest level in Stage 6 and beyond.

5.3

Capable students who rapidly grasp new concepts should go beyond 5.2 and study at a more advanced level with these additional topics.

Students who have completed 5.1, 5.2 and 5.2 and 5.3 are generally well prepared for a calculus-based Stage 6 Mathematics course.

5.3 §

These topics are recommended for students who will complete all the 5.1 and 5.2 content and have time to cover some additional material.

These topics are intended for students aiming to complete a calculus-based mathematics course in Stage 6.

5.2

A typical student should be able to complete all the 5.1 and 5.2 material by the end of Year 10. If possible, students should also cover some 5.3 topics.

Students who have completed 5.1 and 5.2 without any 5.3 material typically find it difficult to complete a calculus-based Stage 6 Mathematics course.

5.2 ◊

These topics are recommended for students who will complete all the 5.1 content and have time to cover some additional material.

These topics are intended for students aiming to complete a non-calculus course in Stage 6, such as Mathematics General.

5.1

Stage 5.1 contains compulsory material for all students in Years 9 and 10. Some students will be able to complete these topics very quickly. Others may need additional time to master the basics.

Students who have completed 5.1 without any 5.2 or 5.3 material have very limited options in Stage 6 Mathematics.

4

Some students require revision and consolidation of Stage 4 material prior to tackling Stage 5 topics.
