VOLVOS HISTORY (I) Withaveryparticulartasteforlife,forliving,protectandenjoy,VolvoCarCorporationhasmaintaineditssafepassageintothefuture.Thisloveoflifeisreflectedinsecurityfeaturestotheirvehiclesandthathehaswonadherentsinallcountrieswheretheyselltheirvehicles.ThebeginningsHisstrongpersonalitycomesfromSwedishitsveryinception,andoneoftheSwedishtraditions:thefeastofcrab.Itwasthe25July1924whenAssarGabrielssonandGustafLarsonwereinarestaurantinStockholm,theSturehof.Afteracoupleofhourstoenjoyaplateofcrab,bothcarenthusiastshad"cooked"anideathatlaterbecameknownasVolvo.InkeepingwithSwedishtradition,thefirstVolvocarwasnicknamed"Jakob",thenamecomesfromJuly25intheSwedishcalendar,thedateonwhichJakobjustheldhisbirthday.OV4wasthemodel.Thecarhada2-literenginedeveloping28HPandleftthefactoryonApril14,1927.InthosedaysitwasverycommonforaSwedishfirmenteredthemarketwithaconvertible,thisisreflectedinthelowdemandof"Jakob",whichduringthefewyearsthatitwasonsaleonlymanaged300clients.TheimageofVolvosafecarsalsodatesbackmanyyears,fromtheverybeginning,whenoneoftheprototypesof"Jakob"(whichhadnotevengoneonsale)sufferedanaccidentwithanAmericancaronaroadbetweenStockholmandGothenburg VOLVOS HISTORY (II) Asaresultofthataccident,thecarsufferedsignificantdamageimported,whilethe"Jakob"onlyhadsomescratches.Stepsmadeitsinternationalmarkwasslow,butsteady.In1927only24unitswereexported,andin1929exportedmorethan3units.ThefirstcountrytowhichexportedaVolvovehiclewasFinland,butverysoonafteritsexportsalsowenttoDenmark,Cuba,Netherlands,Palestine,Syria,Egypt,MoroccoandArgentina.ExportstotheUnitedStatesbeganin1955.SellingcarsinAmericawasconsideredagreatchallengebecauseoftheintensecompetitionthatcharacterizesthismarket.However,thePV444wasverysuccessfulandthustheUnitedStatesbecamethelargestmarketforVolvocars.DifficultyearsoffWhatistodaySwedenwasatraditiontobecomeaU.S.companymore.Itiswellknownthatinthelate20(difficultyearsforVolvo)theautomakerCharlesNashwasabouttoclosethedeal,butthesameAssarGabrielssonandjoinedthecompanySKFforthecompanytoremaininSweden.Inthe30stherewasastronginspirationinVolvobySwedishengineerswhowereworkingintheU.S.,wheretheylearnedtheproperdesignandtechnologyinNorthAmerica.ThePV36waslaunchedin1935.Thiscarhadaboldandinnovativeonlineandincorporatesanindependentsuspensiononeachwheel.The"Carioca"isnowoneoftheclassicVolvo.ThePV800hasearnedfameandrecognitionamongthe40taxidrivers,becausetheinteriorwasspaciousandcomfortableidealfortheirwork.Itwasalsousedtobringthehospitaltowomenwhowereabouttogivebirth. VOLVOS HISTORY (III) ThetraditionalVolvodesignoriginatedwiththePV444model.Thiswasacarthatconveyedsecurity,wassmallerthantheirAmericancompetitors,butlargerandmoredynamicthantheEuropeans.Ontheotherhand,thePV444waspowerfulenoughtobecalled"familysport."Healsobecameafavoriteofmanyracers.ThesuccessofthePV444inracesandrallieswasrepeatedinthe80swiththeVolvo240TurboinEurope,andinthe90swiththeVolvoS40RacingintheUK.Inthe50Italiansdictatedtherulestobefollowedindesignterms.Awareoftheimportanceofdesign,VolvoCarCorporationforthefirsttimeappointedachiefdesigner.ThiswasJanWilsgaard,whocombinedwithfunctionalityinspiredbyItalianandSwedishandP120wasbornin1956.AttheforefrontofsecurityIn1959Volvorevolutionizedtheautomotiveworldwhenitintroducedtheseatbelt3-point,inventedbyNilsBohlincompany.Soimportantwasthattheseatbeltisoneofthemostimportantinnovationsthathavesavedmorelivesinautomotivehistory,andremainsthebasisofanymoderncarsafety.Volvofirstprizeforthesafetyoftheirvehiclesarrivedin1962.1966,the140wasthefirstVolvosedanandwagonversionspresented.Itwasfollowedby240and245,whichisconsideredthe"motherofallVolvotrucks."
