My Dear Colleagues,

We are really really happy to present 4th issue of IAP TODAY, the recently introduced monthly news le�er of IAP Kerala, because this contains reports from all our 22 branches . Editors and all office bearers are doing excellent work. The ac�on plan PIVOT started working. We have given maximum importance to Vamping dormant and semi dormant branches and OB has been installed in all branches and all branches also started func�oning in full swing.

We have celebrated kidneyday, rare disease day, womens day , measles and TB day, down syndrome day etc in March. All branches par�cipated with great enthusiasm. I've to men�on the excellent ac�vi�es of our health clubs mastered by Dr Manoj and Pooja manoj. We had 12 IAP programmes spread all over kerala on a single day..March 13th . We hope there will be more and more similar occasions. We should be happy to see that many of our members are faculty in other states.

We lost one member Dr Vijayagopal from kayamkulam on 7.3.19. May his departed soul rest in eternal peace.

TOT onPediatric procedural pain management protocol was conducted in Calicut, kollam and vatakara. The par�cipa�on and interac�on was really encouraging. TOT on immunisa�on and EB mee�ng in cochin on 31.3.19 was another land mark. There was a stakeholders mee�ng on BFHI in CDC Trivandrum 23.3.19 and it was frui�ul too.

Dear Seniors, Teachers and Friends,

It gives me immense pleasure to address you for the month of March because we had lots of ac-�vi�es by almost 80% of the branches. This month we had the World Women's day and World Kidney day on 8th and 14th which pertains to adults even though. Then the World Measles day, World Down's Syndrome day and World TB day were done on 16th, 21st and 24th. The Measles day was celebrated at Idukki under the guidance of Dr Anandakeshavan T.M with Dr Sajith John and Dr Sr Bennet ac�vely par�cipa�ng. Hope Anand Sir can rejenuvate the Idukki branch this year. Down Syndrome day was ac�vely done by IAP Kozhikode with around 6 ac�vi�es lead by Dr Shaji John. World TB day in associa�on with State TB Cell, Health Service, GoK was organized by IAP Wayanad and the STEPS programme was introduced by IMA state President Dr M E Sugathan. The programme was represented by Dr Johny Sebas�an, Jt Sec.

The second ToT on Paren�ng and PPP was excellently organized on March 10th by IAP Vatakara team Dr Prasanth P and Dr Haridas well a�ended by >60 pediatricians from Thrissur to Kasaragod. The programme was supported by DPM Kozhikode Dr Naveen.

ICANCL Kerala under the leadership of Dr Ashok and Dr George F M did a very useful work-shop on Child Abuse at Believer's Medical College on Mar 10th organized by Dr Binu and Dr Jijo team of IAP Pathanamthi�a

The ToT on Immuniza�on was successful with representa�on from all branches. We thank the fac-ulty Dr S. Balasubramonian(member ACVIP), Dr T.U. Sukumaran, Dr Sheeja, Dr Anandakeshavan, Dr C Jayakumar, Dr Sindhu, Dr Pisharody, Dr Purushothaman, Dr O Jose, Dr Krishna Mohan, Dr Siby Kurian Philip for their excellent presenta�ons and full hearted support. I hope each branch will conduct the Immuniza�on CMEs in their respec�ve branches atleast by May31st.

The first workshop on the module prepara�on for Breast feeding Promo�on was conducted at CDC Hall,TVM on March 23rd Dr M.K.C. Nair and Dr RajMohanan with support from the Director CDC Dr Babu George. It was a�ended by DHS Dr Saritha L, Dr Jameela, Dr Harikumar(KUHS), Dr Rajagopal (Sr Obstetrician), Dr Sreehari (NHM) and many senior Pediatricians from South and Mid Zone

From this month we have formed an Editorial board for IAP Today represented by Dr Praveen(TVM), Dr Aby(PTA), Dr Manu(KTM), DrNisha (TCH), Dr Muraraleedharan (Vatakara) and Dr Renjith(KZK) to help Dr Vishnu Mohan in carrying out the bulle�n effec�vely. Also we the edi-torial board will be bringing out messages from Past Presidents of IAP Kerala in order.

We thank all the Office bearers and members for their full support in carrying out the day ac�vi-�es this month and hope will carry forward in the coming months.

1. Society was launched in March 2011 - to offer substan�al financial support to the bereaved families of an IAP life member, who has joined FBS.

2. Currently, the benefit amount is 7.6 lakhs to its 2210 members. As more life members of CIAP join FBS, the benefit figure increases. The DEATH BENEFIT figure is a mul�ple of Rs. 350 and the number of exis�ng alive members in FBS, at the �me of a member's death.

3. Family benefit is expected to cross NINE lakhs by end of 2020. Finally, by year 2030, we aim at a disbursement amount of Fi�een lakhs. Family's benefit is fully secure, irrespec�ve of the Cause of Death - natural, accidental or suicide.

4. Currently, the age-group eligible to join FBS is 25 - 60 years. Admission fees varies from 9,000 at lower age to 46,000 when age reaches 60.

5. A�er admission, all the FBS members ARE AT PAR, in all aspects.

6. All members are billed an annual FC bill, generated in considera�on of number of deceased FBS members in the previous year.

7. The annual bills in the last 7 years have been Rs3200 as maximum.

8. Annual bills have to be paid for maximum 25 years a�er admission, OR �ll the member survives - whichever is LESS.

9. The benefit to the families of FBS members (beginning a�er one full year of incuba�on period) is available �ll your LAST BREATH. No fixed Insurance tenure, alike LIC policies. # Incredible feature, unique of FBS #

10. Basic theme of FBS : During your life�me, you regularly contribute a small amount of money towards your deceased FBS colleagues (via the annual FC bill). Your family is equally assured of a similar but larger benefit in future, when you are no more.

11. THE LONGER ONE LIVES - HIS FAMILY BENEFITS MORE, because FBS is then a larger group of like-minded members.

12th March 2019House visit and Medical Camp for the Nomadic "Malampandaram" tribes in the forest heart of Sabarimala

Last month IAP Pathanamthi�a, District Legal Services So-ciety Pathanamthi�a and SathyasaiSevatrust conducted free medical camp for the Nomadic tribes at Nilackal and distributed tents for them.

Follow up visits were done today for the Malampandaram families at their temporary tents in the deep for-ests of Sabarimala by IAP Pathanamthi�a President Dr Binuku�an.

He visited 29 families at various places ba�ling the diffi-cult terrains of Nilackal, Pamba, A�athode, Laha etc. Nec-essary medicines with Nutri�onal supplements were given and health classes were taken. District legal ser-vices society Pathanamthi�a and Sathyasaiseva trust vol-unteers helped him in this daun�ng task.

In the coming months we are planning regular follow up visits for these tribal communi�es.

15th March 2019IAP Pathanamthi�a in associa�on with the forest department of Kerala conducted a Mobile Medical camp for children of planta�on workers at Travancore Rubber and Tea estate AmbanadAryankavu.

The camp started at 11. 00 am and con�nued �ll 7.30pm in the night at various loca�ons in the 2000 acreAmbanad Estate. Dr. Binuku�an P.V, president IAP Pathanamthi�a, handed over free essen�al medicines with nutri�onal supplements and took health classes for children.

Nursing Training and Empowerment16th March 2019

2nd Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop for nurses of south zone, Kerala on "Basic Neonatal Resuscita�on and Essen�al Newborn Care" was conducted on 16th March 2019 at Hotel KGA Elite Con�nental, Thiruvalla.

The mee�ng was hosted jointly by NNF Pathanamthi�a& IAP Pathanamthi�a. Dr. V. C. Manoj, state president NNF Kerala, inaugurated the func�on. IAP Kerala vice presi-dent Dr. P.R Jayakumar, NNF state secretary Dr. Vishnu Mohan, NNF state joint secretary Dr. Nelby George Mathew, NNF Pathanamthi�a president Dr. Binu Govind, NNF Pathanamthi�a secretary Dr. Rony Joseph, IAP Pathanamthi�a Secretary Dr. Jijo Joseph John a�ended the inaugural func�on and Dr. Binuku�an president IAP Pathanamthi�a gave the welcome speech.

64 Nurses from various hospitals in the South Zone ac-�vely par�cipated in the workshop. Eminent neonatologists from Kerala including Dr. V. C. Manoj, Dr. Vishnu Mohan, Dr. Jacob Abraham, Dr. BinuGovind, Dr. Nelby George Mathew, Dr. Sajan, Dr. Ananthan, Dr. Annama, Dr.Binuku�an, Dr. Minu Thomas, Dr. Linspaul, Dr. Sumitha Arun, Dr. Sahil and Dr. Gingle took the various sessions for nurses.

We at IAP Pathanamthi�a are delighted to announce a supplement to the Voice of IAP PTA as an online journal in malayalam for crea�ng public awareness about common health condi�ons in children.

First edi�on of the magazine was released by Dr. Vinay Goyal IAS, Subcollector of Pathanamthi�a, on 19th March 2019 in the presence of Dr. Jijo Joseph John and Dr. Nelby George Mathew.

The first edi�on of the magazine covers frequently asked ques�ons regarding the various aspects of congenital heart diseases in accordance to the congenital heart disease awareness week. The experts for this issue are Dr. John Valliathu and Dr. Suresh Kumar of the Believers Interna�onal Heart Centre from Believers Church Medical College Hospital, Thiruvalla.

The next issue will cover au�sm spectrum disorders in accordance to the world au�sm day of April 2nd.

The theme for this year was Leave no one behind.

Rev. Fr. Jose Kallumalickal, CEO Pushpagiri group of Ins�tu�ons, inaugurated the func�on in the presence of Prof. Dr. Sukumaran Sir, past na�onal president of IAP.

Program -2Our Secretary Dr. Jijo Joseph John a�ended two mee�ngs in the DMO office Pathanamthi�a.

First mee�ng was about public and private partnership to improve care and prevent tuberculosis & free sample col-lec�on for free genexpert from all private hospitals by NGO.

Second mee�ng was on Clinical establishment act, regis-tra�on procedure.

The messages received from the mee�ng will be pre-sented to the members in the next general body mee�ng.

24th March 2019The department of Pediatrics, Believers Church Medical College, and IAP Pathanamthi�a conducted a CME on Au-�sm Spectrum Disorder - An Overview and Update in BCMCH.

Dr. Girija Mohan welcomed the delegates and speakers. Dr. T U Sukumaran inaugurated the func�on, IAP Pathanamthi�a website and recieved the first registra-�on for Neocon 2020.

Dr. George ChandyMa�ethra addressed the crowd and re-leased the au�sm booklet. Dr.JeesonUnni, Dr. Binuku�an V, Dr. Roy Alexander, Dr. P. R. Jayakumar, Dr. Elizabeth Varkey Cherian shared the dais for the func�on. Dr. K. S. Vijaykumar gave the vote of thanks.

Various sessions were taken by Dr. Varghese Punnose, Dr. JeesonUnni, Mrs. Veena Mohan, Dr. Elizabeth Varkey Cherian, Dr. Aby Dany Varghese, Dr. Manju Abraham and Dr. Jijo Joseph John. All the talks were greatly appreciated and a�racted an a�endance of 65 delegates.

March 26th 2019The department of Pediatrics, Pushpagiri Ins�tute of Medical Sciences, in associa�on with IAP Pathanamthi�a celebrated World Tuberculosis Day in PIMS.

The theme for this year's celebra�on was "It's Time".

Various sessions were taken by Prof. Dr. T. U. Sukumaran, past na�onal president of IAP, Prof. Dr. Krishnan Namboothiri and Prof. Dr. Latha S. The latest changes in the guidelines for diagnosing, preven�ng and trea�ng var-ious forms of tuberculosis was discussed in length.

WOMEN'S DAY Dr Sangeetha Joseph, past pres ident v is i ted 'Mahilamandiram', which is under Alappuzha municipal-ity and conducted a free medical camp as a part of women's day observa�on.

She also visited vikalangamandiram( shelter for disabled persons) and examined 11 children there.

WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY - March 23

TB Day observa�on conducted at Government Taluk hospitalKayamkulam on March 23rd sunday as a joint ven-ture of IAP& District TB Centre Alappuzha. The TB aware-ness rally was flagged of by DR Salim, District TB Officer, alappuzha. Doctors, staff nurses, paramedics, students, ASHAworkers, par�cipated in rally. There was a flash mob at KSRTC Bus stsndkayamkulam, by nursing students.

Poster exhibi�on was also conducted. An awareness skit about TB and its symptoms and new diagnos�cs and its surveillance.

The mee�ng was inagurated by Dr Vidya PV, Dep DMO.

Dr Venugopal, consultant in Pulmonology, gave a talk about Impact of TB in society.

Dr Sreeprasad, secretary IAP gave felicita�on.

The half day program was covered by media, and was well appreciated.

WORLD DOWNS SYNDROME DAY-21/03/2019

IAP Alappuzha observed WDSD at DEIC on March 23 rd. Our senior pediatrician Dr REMADEVI lead the ac�vi�es. An interac�ve ques�on answer session with parents were conducted.

Under the leadership of Mrs Hema Mary, occupa�onal therapist, A training campaign was conducted for making house hold items using easily available domes�c items and children succeeded in doing that.

Cultural ac�vi�es were also there, winners got prizes.

Our third IAP mee�ng was held on 5.02.19at IMA blood bank Hall, Thodupuzha.

The mee�ng was called to order by our President, Dr. P.C. George

Dr.Rehna, IAP Malanad Secretary presented the minutes of the last mee�ng in February.

A detailed and enlightening class on Inflammatory Bowel Disease was g iven by Dr. Geetha, Paediatr ic Gastroenterologist from Aster Medicity.

It was followed by another brainstorming session based on case scenarios on common pediatric endocrine disor-ders encountered in OPD by Dr. Parvathy.L, Paediatric En-docrinologist from Aster Medicity.

Speakers were given momentos by Dr. George and Dr. Isac Mathai, HOD, MOSC.

Thirty three members a�ended the programme. Mee�ng was followed by fellowship and dinner.

1) INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATION – 08.03.19

IAP Malanad had two programmes on women's day.

a) IAPMalanad in assoscia�on with Al- Azhar Medical College celebrated Women's Day on 08.03.19. The final year students of Al- Azhar Medical College played a great role in organizing the func�on. Dr.Rehna gave a talk on women empowerment and also discussed the theme of this year's Women's day to an audience group comprising general public, pa�ents and students. It was followed by a skit about the need for equality among men and women in all sectors. A theme dance stressing the importance of the same was also conducted.

b) IAP Malanad in associa�on with Holy Family Hospital, Muthalakodam conducted a series of talks. Our treasurer Dr.Sr.Asha Maria inaugurated the func�on and gave an enlightening talk on women empowerment and equality. The mee�ng was well a�ended.

WORLD KIDNEY DAY CELEBRATION - 14.03.19

We had two programmes on World Kidney Day.

a) IAP Malanad in assoscia�on with Al-Azhar Medical College and Super speciality Hospital had a World Kidney Day celebra�on. Dr.Rehna gave talk on general measures to improve the health of kidney. A skit about a child having wrong ea�ng habits leading to kidney problems was done by the M.B.B.S students. Dr.Rabeen gave a talk on this year's theme of kidney day and why it is celebrated.Theprogramme was well appreciated by the public.

a) IAP Malanad celebrated World Kidney Day in associa-�on with Holy Family Hospital, Muthalakodam, Thodupuzha on 14.3.19.Our treasurer Dr. Sr. Asha Maria was part of the team. Talks on the importance of kidney health and other topics pertaining to the topic were dis-cussed. Two flash mobs were conducted at different places of Thodupuzha stressing on the importance of this day.

World Down syndrome day was celebrated at Al-Azhar Medical College in assoscia�on with IAP Malanad on 21.3.19.Talks and classes for public were taken by Dr.Rehna and prefinal year M.B.B.S students. A role play demonstra�ng a down syndrome child if given proper care and a�en�on can achieve greater heights was also conducted stressing this year's theme 'Leave no one behind'.

Workshop on Basic NRP (neonatal Resuscita�on programme) and Essen�al newborn care for nurses was organised by Na�onal Neonatology Forum and IAP Malanad at Al- Azhar Medical College, THodupuzha on 31.3.19 from 8am to 4.30 pm.

The workshop was a�ended by 57 nurses from 15 colleges. There were 12 facul�es from different parts of Kerala.

The official inaugura�on func�on started with a prayer song. Dr.P.C.George, IAP Malanad President welcomed everyone to the programme. The workshop was officially inaugurated by Dr.Shiyas,Director of Al- Azhar Medical College. Presiden�al address was given by Dr. Manoj. V.C, NNF Kerala President. Felicita�ons were given by Dr. Diwakar (Dean,MOSC Medical College, Kolencherry), Dr. Balchander (Kerala IAP Secretary) and Dr. Vishnu Mohan (NNF Kerala Secretary).Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Rehna.T, IAP Malanad Secretary.

Basics of neonatal resuscita�on as given by Dr.Manoj.V.C. Delegates were divided into 4 groups and sequen�al worksta�ons on neonatal resuscita�on- Basic NRP: Prepara�on at Birth , Ini�al Steps , PPV (Bag and Mask) and Chest Compressions & Medica�ons was conducted by Dr.Bini Chandy, Dr.Vishnu and Dr. Anice Joy ,Dr.Jeswin and Dean Michael.

Lectures on Essen�al newborn care on Breast Feeding: Basic Concepts, Breast Feeding: Problems and Solu�ons; Preterm Feeding, Basic concepts in well baby care, Red Flag Signs in a Neonate was given by Dr. Diwakar, Dr. Balchander, Dr. Nelby and Dr. Soly Manuel respec�vely.

It was followed by Round One of rota�ng worksta�ons on Essen�al Newborn care- Stabilisa�on of a Sick Neonate / Post Resuscita�on, Neonatal Jaundice and Phototherapy, Nursing Procedures by Dr.Soly Manuel, Dr.Jeswin and Dr.Vishnu. Second round of rota�ng worksta�ons on Essen�al Newborn care- Breast Feeding: Issues and Solu�ons, Developmentally Suppor�ve Care and Pain Scores and Preven�on of Infec�on: Hand Hygiene, Equipment Disinfec�on by Dr.Ananthem,Dr.Anice and Dr.Dhanya Roy.

Towards the end of the workshop there were two lectures on IV Fluids and Drugs followed by Documenta-�on and Errors by Dr. Rehna.T and Dr. Bini Chandy.

All the sessions were very interac�ve and delegates were clearing their doubts with the facul�es at the end of each session.

This workshop was given eight credit hours by Keral Nurses and Midwifery Council. Cer�ficates were given to all delegates and facul�es at the end of the workshop. It was followed by a group photo and feedback.

The workshop ended at 4 pm. IAP Malanad extends its hearty thanks to NNF KeralaPresident and Secretary, team Al-Azhar and all the delegates for making this conference a grand success.

.On March 21st : World Down Syndrome day was observed at Chaithanya Special School , Kunnamkulam. A picture based quiz was conducted for the differently abled students of the school. Prizes were given to the winners. Dr.Rajagopal Menon par�cipated in the program.

World Down Syndrome was also observed at Gov.Medical College Thrissur. Topics were presented by Dr.Parvathy Mohan and Dr.Purushothaman. Experience sharing was done by Mrs.Annapoornajayaraman ,the Principal of Special School for Down Syndrome children at Thrissur.

There were variety entertainment programs by the differently abled children and prizes given.
