  • whentheyareinfactjustcuringsuffering.Theonewhoendssufferingdoesntseekconstantlyandcompulsivelyfordifferentobjectsofpleasurebuthaspeaceandcontentment.2)SamudayaSacca:ThecauseofthisrestlessnessandpleasureseekingisSamudaya(thethreeTanha).RupaandMamaneverstopworking;seeing,hearing,touching,smelling,investigating,determining,etc.3)NirodhaSacca:Characterizedbyfreedomfromrestlessness,becauseitisfreeofTanha;hasthepeacefulnessofNibbana.4)MaggaSacca:CharacterizedbyhavingtheproperqualitiesnecessarytorealizetheFourNobleTruthsandreachNibbana.HowtoApplytheNobleTruths1)Realizingsuffering(sufferingistheFiveKhandas:RupaandNama).Thisisnotordinarysuffering(achesandpains)butinherentsuffering(DukkhaSacca).2)Samudayaisthecauseofsuffering.3)Nirodha(sufferingisextinguished:cessation)4)FollowingtheEightFoldPathleadstorealizingtheFourNobleTruths.HowthisPracticeFitstheFourNobleTruths1)Itshowsthetruthofsuffering:Andsowepracticetorealizesuffering.SufferingisRupaandNama.2)Itshowsdefilementsleadtosuffering:SowepracticetoeradicateTanha.Themorewerealizesufferingthemorecraving(Tanha)iseradicatedbecauseTanhahasthewrongviewthatRupaandNamaarewe,andthatwesuffer.3)Reducingdefilementleadstowardcessation(Nirodha)becausethemorecravingiseradicated,thecloseryougettoNirodha,orNibbana.4)Themorewereachcessation,themorethe8FoldPathisdeveloped.IfPannarealizesDukkhaSacca,thenallFourNobleTruthsarerealized,andthepracticeisperfect.AfolloweroftheBuddha,withconcentration,awarenessandconstantthoroughunderstandingofimpermanence,knowswithwisdomthesensations,theirarising,theircessationandthepathleadingtotheirend.Ameditatorwhohasreachedtheendofsensationsisfreedfromcraving,fullyliberated.TheBuddhafurthersaysveryemphaticallythattheAriyoAtthangikoMaggo(theNobleEightfoldPath)hasthepurposeofunderstandingVedanaandreachingthestateofVedanaNirodha(CessationofSensations)Therearethesethreetypesofbodilysensations.Whatarethethree?Therearepleasantsensation,unpleasantsensationandsensationwhichisneutral.TheNobleEightfoldPathshouldbepracticedforthecompleteknowledge,thefullrealization,thegradualeradicationandtheabandonmentofthesethreebodilysensations.Sensations(Vedana)arethetoolsbywhichwecanpracticetheFourNobleTruthsandtheNobleEightfoldPath;andbyrealizingthecharacteristicofAnicca(impermanence)wefreeourselvesfromthebondsofAvijjaandTanhaandpenetratetotheultimatetruth:Nibbana,freedomfromsuffering,astatewhichisbeyondthefieldofvedanabeyondthefieldofNamaRupa(MindMatter)

    1.DukkhaSaccaThefirstNobleTruthofsufferinginvolvesclearlyseeingandtherebydiscerningthatbecauseallconditionedphenomenaareimpermanent,theyareunsatisfactory.Thereforeit'stheendingofclingingtoanyandallconditionedphenomenathattheBuddhacallsthedeathless(Amata)liberationofmind(CittassaVimokkha)

    i.PhysicalPain(Hunger,Itches,Ache)

  • ii.MentalPain(Irritation,Stress,Frustration,LossofLovedOne)

    2.SamudayaSaccaThesecondNobleTruthisthetruthofthecauseofsuffering(Samudaya)whichiscravingorTanha.TherearethreekindsofTanha:

    1)Kamatanha(sensualcraving)ofthefivesenses(form,sound,odor,taste,touch)forKammacunda(sensualpleasureorsensualobjects).Ifthereisnopleasureinsensualobjects,thereisnoKamatanha.Forexample,ifyouhaveIndriyasamvarasila(senserestraint)withallfivesenses,youwillhavenoKamatanhaatthattime.KamatanhaiscompletelyerasedattheAnagamiPath(OnceReturner)2)Bhavatanha(cravingforexistence).Bhavameansliterallybecoming,whichreferstorepeatedandsuccessiveexistencefromrebirth.TherearethirtyoneBhava,orstatesofbecoming,rangingfrombirthinthestatesofunhappinessandgoinguptothehighestheavenlystate.Bhavatanhacausespeoplewhoareevenmortallyillorseriouslyinjuredorhandicappedtoclingtolifeandfeardeath.BhavatanhaiserasedattheArahattaPath.3)Vibhavatanha(cravingfornonexistence).ThisistheAnnihilationistviewthatthereisonlyonelifeanditendsatdeath.Thus,becausethereisonlyonelife,theannihilationistwantstohaveasmuchpleasureaspossible,whilestillalive.TheStreamWinnerpathmomenteradicatesVibhavatanha.

    EveryonehasKamatanha,butwithKamatanhatheyeitherhaveBhavaTanhaorVibhavatanhathatis,theycraveexistenceornonexistence.Allofthe3typesofTanhaaboveresultinrebirthinanewexistence.(Bhumi).Andsothecravingandaversionarisingfromignorantlyidentifyingwithconditionedphenomena,andtheinevitablesufferingthatresultsfromsuchidentificationandcraving,constitutesthetruthoftheoriginofsuffering.

    3.NirodhaSaccaThethirdNobleTruthNirodhaisthecessationorextinctionofsuffering.NirodhaandNibbanaarethesame.NibbanaistheDhammathatextinguishesKilesa,andsoDukkha.

    ThisisdonebyextinguishingthecauseofDukkhaSamudayaorthethreeTanha(Craving,Hunger,andLonging):

    1.Cravingfor"sensuality"or"sensualpleasures"(KamaTanha)2.Cravingfor"becoming"or"existence"(BhavaTanha)3.Cravingfor"nobecoming"or"nonexistence"or"extermination"(VibhavaTanha)

    InNibbanamomentarilythereisnoDukkha,becausethefiveKhandasareextinguished.ThisoccursbrieflyinthethoughtmomentcalledMaggaSacca.WhenthepractitionerrealizesDukkhabywisdomthenoneknowsthatTanhaisthecauseandsooneknowsthatonemustgetridofTanha.Whenthecauseisextinguished,theresultisextinguished.IfTanhaiscompletelyeradicated,thenfinalNibbanaisreached,andArahantship.Ifthepractitionerdoesntrealizetanhaisharmful,hecantreachNibbanaandthusextinguishDukkha.Nibbanais:Theextinctionofthefiresofgreed,ofhatred,andofignorance;theunconditioned;thesupremegoalofBuddhism;theSummumBonumofBuddhism;thefinalemancipation;theextinctionofalldefilementsandsuffering.

  • ThecharacteristicofNirodha(Nibbana)ispeacefulness,quietudeandfreedomfromKilesa.TheonewhorealizesNibbanaisgoodanddesirableisalsotheonewhowillrealizesufferingintheworld(theFiveKhandas).Ifonethinkstheworldishappy,Nibbanahasnomeaningforhim.ThereisnorebirthinNibbanaandnodeath.ThereisnoRupaandNamaanymore,orFiveKhandas;RupaandNamaarenolongertheobjectofmeditation.Nibbanaisnotaplace,butitstillexists.Itislikethewind;youonlyknowitbyitseffect.NibbanaisanobjectofanexcellentorspecialSacca,whichisMaggaSacca.TheordinarypersonissaturatedinKilesaandMaggaSaccacannotariseinhimunlesshetakesupthepracticeofVipassana.SowhenhepracticesVipassanatheSaccaoftheonewhopracticesbecomespurified,andthatiscalledMaggaSacca,whichhasNibbanaasanobject.NibbanaisnotSacca;NibbanaistheobjectofSacca,whichisMaggaSacca.TheonewhoreachesNibbanaknowsbyoneselfonedoesnotneedateachertotellhim.NobodycanreachNibbanauntilonepracticesVipassanaandVipassanaPannabecomesMaggaSacca.NibbanaistheendofDukkha,butyoucantreachNibbanaunlessyoufollowtheEightFoldPath.TherearetwokindsofNibbana:

    1)Saupadisesanibbana(Nibbanarealizedwiththebodyremaining).ThisiswithkilesaextinguishedbutFiveKhandasremaining.2)Anupadisesanibbana(NibbanarealizedwithbothKilesaandFiveKhandasextinguished.)Thisisthedeathofbodyandmindofonewithoutdefilement,andiscalledParinibbana.

    4.MaggaSaccaThefourthNobleTruthMaggaSaccawhichistheEightFoldPathleadingtothewayoutofsuffering.

    Maggameanspath,andthatpathleadstoNibbana,whichistheDhammathatextinguishessuffering.ThereisonlyonewaytofollowtheEightFoldPathandthatisbypracticingSatipathana,whichisthefirstpathofBodhipakkhiyadhamma,andleadstopurification,ortheeliminationofKilesa.TheEightFoldPathiscomposedofSila,Samadhi,andPannaandistheonlywaytoendsuffering.

    Wisdom(Panna):1)RightUnderstanding(SammaDitthi)RealizingtheFourNobleTruths,whichistorealizetheSabhavaDhammaofthetruthsastheyare.Ifitismundane,RupaNamaistheobject.Ifitissupramundane,Nibbanaistheobject.2)RightThought(SammaSankappa)Nekkhamma:selfdenial;Abyapada:nonhatred;andAhimsa:nonharming.Thefunctionofrightthoughtisveryimportant.ItisusedtohelpAtapiAtiSampajannatoworkcorrectlyinSatipathana.

    1)ThewisdomthatrealizesDukkhaalsoextinguishesVipallasa(perversityofperceptioni.e.bodyandmindarepermanent,etc.)2)ThewisdomthatrealizesSamudaya(causeofsuffering)changesthewrongviewthatwewerecreatedbyahigherpower,insteadofbeingtheresultofcauses.3)ThewisdomthatrealizesNirodhacorrectsthewrongviewaboutfalseNibbana,whichiscreatedbySamadhi.

    4)ThewisdomthatrealizesMaggaerasesanyclingingtowrongpracticeandshowsthetruepaththatendssuffering.BecauseTanhaiseradicated(thecause),theworldofthefiveKhandasisextinguished,andsoDukkhaisextinguished.ThewisdomthatrealizestheFourNobleTruthsisfoundonlyinBuddhism.ConclusionInshort,
