BUILDERS work-ing on the Gateway Tourism Centre

comprising an information offi ce and tourism complex in Mpophomeni expect it to open in December after the three-year project received addition-al funding to complete it.

Boasting an information offi ce, administration centre and boardroom at the town-ship entrance opposite a petrol station, the complex will also offer two craft shops, a fresh produce outlet and a stage for shows and gatherings. To complete the picture, there will be a restaurant, traditional healer and herbalist on site.

Situated on the R617 between Merrivale and the Southern Berg, it will be the only refreshment stop for tour-ists and travellers between the two points.

A children’s playground is also envisaged if equipment can be donated. Later, walk-ing and cycle paths will be

established to link up with the museum, Montrose House and the Nokulunga Gumede Memorial Wall.

However, a lot of clear-ing up still has to be done, a garden established, signs erected and a tenant found for the restaurant.

The completed complex will form one of the area’s tourism points with the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Expe-rience (ZMTE), the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and the information offi ce at Howick Falls to attract more tourists to the area.

It is the dream of Frank Mchunu, Director of the ZMTE, to uplift the communi-ty of Mpophomeni by complet-ing the complex and creating employment – and it may soon come true after many years of planning and sourcing funds.

Anyone willing to help should contact Frank at 082 228 2044.

THE latest spat e of attempted robberies in Howick businesses occurred on Tuesday night (22nd October) at the White House Centre, when three shops were broken into.

Shop owners told Village Talk they suspect the thieves were looking for money, as no goods were taken. The perpetrators broke the windows at Total Woman Beauty & Body Clinic to gain access and broke the window at Hair Elegance, but were unable to get in. The security gate at Alpha Flooring was destroyed and the front door smashed – again nothing was taken and it appears money was the reason for the break-in.

Since then Village Talk has received unconfi rmed reports of break-ins at other Howick businesses in the CBD.

LICKEN, the much loved mascot of Dulcet Centre in Main Road, Howick,

has been taken in broad daylight! Witnesses to the heinous deed watched in dismay as Licken was scooped up, put in a car and driven off.

Licken, A male Cochin, has been part of the centre for the last three years and is known to all, far

and wide. He can be seen strut-ting around the centre and getting in between everyone’s legs at the auction house, pecking at crumbs from wors rolls and chips.

The arrival of Licken at Dulcet Centre has quite a story attached. Rob Wilson, the founder of Midlands Auctions, was outside one day and watched as Licken crossed the busy Main Road.

Unlike some chickens that browse and feed, Licken walked purpose-fully towards the gate and straight to Mr. Wilson. From that day Lick-en has been part of the centre, with many folk popping in just to visit him!

Licken’s whereabouts has been traced but the centre still awaits his return. Please, if you have Licken, bring him back!

AT a meeting with the Umgun-gundlovu District Management and uMngeni Councillors, Pam Passmoor and Moira Grueneberg, the Municipal Manager suggested that they put in a proposal of new tariffs. This was done and their submission has been accepted and ratifi ed by the UMDM council. Domestic water consumers will be afforded a substantial degree of relief. Usage of 20kl per month will now cost R213.30 as opposed to the initial 2013/14 tariffs which charged R258.60 for 20kl. With this reduction UMDM is still able to balance their budget but domestic consumers will pay heavily for usage over 25kl and are encouraged to conserve water as this resource is scarce in South Africa. The average household, even with some watering of the garden or veggie patch uses less than 25kl [25,000 litres] per month.

uMngeni 1st Quarter Financial Report

The uMngeni Mayor, Mbali Myeni was upbeat when the 1st quarter fi nan-cial report was presented to the Execu-tive Committee. She pointed out that all the conditional grants are cash backed, the overdraft is not being used, the credi-tors have been paid and R4 million has been invested. She thanked the Deputy Mayor and Councillors Scelo Majozi and Pam Passmoor for all their hard work as members of the Interim Finance Committee.

A fundraising event was held at Howick Community Church in aid of God’s Little Lambs Pre-school. The theme was ‘A

Sentimental Journey’. All the old familiar songs with a travel theme were sung, including ‘Slow Boat to China’, ‘Fly me to the Moon’ and ‘I’m leaving on a Jet Plane’ bringing back nostalgic memories. The staff from the school sang the ‘Click Song’ and ‘Singabahamba yo thina kulomhlaba’ – loosely translated to mean we are journeying on this earth with the destination as

heaven.

ON Friday 4th October, the undercooked Grey Headed Vultures took on a very focused Rest of the World at the Howick Golf Club. The Grey Headed Vultures, a motley bunch roosting in the various ‘Ambers’ in Howick, were captained by a moulting Brian Collins whilst the Rest of the World were led by young Mo Ted Ling.

True to form, the Rest of the World plucked the Vultures again this year, winning by a signifi cant margin. Fortunately there were no serious incidents and the ‘head count’ at the end of the game indicated that there were only three vultures that required assistance to get off the course. Our sincere thanks to Howick Veterinary Clinic and FreeMe for their assistance in this regard

The annual tournament is sponsored by the Harvard House Group and the sum of R4,250 raised on the day was donated to FreeMe in Howick.

Congratulations to Howick’s very own swimming champ!

THE vagaries of fi rst class cricket were amply illustrated by

the senior Inland team’s double header against North West at The Oval recently. Having fallen one wicket short of beating the power-ful North West side in their CSA three-day match, Inland were outgunned in the one-day encoun-ter on Sunday 13th October.

A defi ant last-wicket stand of 36 runs by Graham Hume (26) and Attie Maposa (8) helped Inland to a modest 217 in their fi rst innings that was underpinned by SJ Erwee’s valuable knock of 81.

But it was the bowling of Inland’s Ruan Pretorius that

had The Oval abuzz – known as the Professor, Pienaar smashed through the North West batting line-up with an astounding eight wickets for 31 runs to dismiss the visitors for 105.

Pushing for an outright win, Inland declared its second innings at 233 thanks to contributions from Nic Hendrie (86), Brad Moses (32) and Imran Khan (27) and Kyle Nopper (27) to set North

West a victory target of 346.

To their credit, the visi-tors from Potchefstroom took up the challenge to produce one of the clos-est, and most entertaining, run chases in the competi-tion. Telling contributions by the middle order made for a compelling contest with spinner Nipper work-ing hard for his fi ve scalps (5/82) and supported by Attie Maposa (two) and

a wicket each by Tabraiz Shamsi and fi rst innings hero Pretorius.

Bad light brought an end to the exciting match with North West needing 14 runs and Inland requir-ing one wicket to win. The hosts deservedly won the points stakes and currently occupies third spot on the log.

The one-day game was a complete reversal with North West dominating both the bowl-ing and batting. Electing to bowl fi rst, some costly drops by Inland allowed North West to post an intimidating 293.

The home team’s lacklus-tre batting matched the overcast conditions for Inland to go down by 128 runs. But coach Grant Morgan doesn’t read too much into the result, pointing out that coming to terms with disappoint-ments is part of the game and that the real challenge was for the squad to regroup and face up to the Free State when they met in Bloemfontein the following week-end.

“This is a young, motivated side and they know that have let themselves down, and the only way back is through a command-ing performance on the fi eld,” he said.
