.. people are more sympathetic and give more to a charity when the victim portrayed on the advertisement expressed sadness than when a victim expressed happiness or neutral emotion….AMA Journal of Marketing Research

The Smile Report
2 Celebrating 20 years in Vietnam
2 A tough and tender Smile Ambassador 3 Binh gets a smile...and a second chance!4 Ho Chi Minh City raises $100,000 for smiles
One of my favorite Operation Smile memories is the story of how our program in Vietnam began back in 1989—just 14 years after the end of the war. As part of a cultural collaboration, we were invited to send a team of 38 medical professionals to work with Dr. Nguyen Huy Phan and his team to repair the cleft lips and cleft palates of Vietnamese children. From nations that had been at war, we came together for the sake of 100 boys and girls who needed help. That first trip to Vietnam was the groundbreaker to one of Operation Smile’s most long-standing—and outstanding—programs. Two decades later, nearly 30,000 smiling Vietnamese children and young people are the fruitful reward of that teamwork and the support of friends like you. Each of those smiles represents a changed life. Plus, our Vietnamese staff are training doctors from other countries, including Laos and Burma. In a very real sense, those smiles also changed the world. As Dr. Nguyen Huy Phan (now Chairman of the Board and Founder of Operation Smile Vietnam) said: “Operation Smile has afforded the Vietnamese and the Americans the opportunity, through the smile of a child, to...understand each other, so that a better world can be the beneficiary.” Please join us in celebrating 20 years of work that has helped to build a bridge of peace between cultures. And thank you! It wouldn’t be possible without you.

When Cam Ly was born, there was a hole in her face where her little mouth should have been. Her parents, Nguyen Linh Tam and Pham Thi Nga, were shocked and puzzled that their first and only child was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate. This young couple from Tay Ninh Province in South Vietnam knew of no other child with these facial deformities—nor of any in their family history. They were heartbroken. Why had their precious little girl been dealt this cruel blow? What kind of life would she have? They cared for her tenderly, struggling with the daily challenges of trying to feed her enough food and milk to provide nourishment, instead of spilling out of her malformed mouth.
When it was time for Cam Ly to try and speak, she couldn’t. Her parents struggled to be positive about the future. But they had a small house on a tiny piece of land. Most of the year, they work as laborers for a very meager income. How could they ever afford surgery for her? FOREVER CHANGED... IN ABOUT 45 MINUTESThen Nguyen Linh Tam and Pham Thi Nga heard that Operation Smile was coming to Ho Chi Minh City as part of our 25th Anniversary World Journey of Smiles. They left their village and brought Cam Ly to be screened. Seeing other children
with cleft lips and cleft palates was comforting. When Cam Ly’s name was called for surgery, they felt even better. And when she returned after about 45 minutes in the operating room, the joy they felt was the best feeling of all. Instantly their little girl’s transformed face released the hopes and dreams that had been bound by despair. It was like Cam Ly was being born a second time, and it was all made possible because of your support.
Two years later, Cam Ly’s smile has brightened their world. Who knows what treasures are in store for her? With your help, she’s been set free...to be the best she can be.
