Letter from our Director

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Vidya & Child! Its my pleasure to share with you our Annual Report for 2013 - 2014. Its been 16 years and it feels like yesterday. Our journey over the years has been tremendous and

our learning immeasurable. At every step, we look at our children as our continuous source of

energy, strength and inspiration.

Reaching out to over 1500 children across 1000 families and spread across 6 communities,

Vidya & Child continues to work in a committed manner for each of the children we work with. Our

staff of over 125 supports us in our endeavour of providing a creative learning environment.

Our children have shown what it takes to succeed despite the challenges that they face on a daily

basis, be it physical, emotional or financial. We are proud of the choices that our children have

made. Despite all pressures, they have chosen fields that interest them and not got swayed by

others, they have held onto values and shown commitment towards their families, they have made

small yet independent decisions. Above all, they have always shown willingness to keep trying and

have never given up.

Over the years, children have performed well in their board exams and have pursued higher studies

through different professional and vocational courses. Children of Vidya & Child today pursue over a

dozen different career choices from engineering to cosmetology, from hotel management to

teaching, from event management to a fitness instructor and so on.

The year 2013-14 was the year of consolidation at Vidya & Child across all programmes. Our effort

to build an organization driven by values, insights and processes continued through the year.

Building capacities and strength across the organization with respect to work around children,

parents and donors was a key focus area.

The year 2013-14 marked Vidya & Child’s advent into a new initiative - the Arise Lab School Project

through our partner Tech Mahindra Foundation. Under this, we are working with an East Delhi

Municipal Corporation school - Bal-Balika Pratibha Vidyalaya, A Block, Dilshad Garden in technical

partnership with Tech Mahindra Foundation. -3-

Letter from our Director….contd.

The objective is to collaboratively bring about improvement in the overall quality of education under

the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model. Through this model, we extend support to more than

250 children belonging to under privileged communities of Dilshad Garden, Tahirpur, Nandnagri,

Seemapuri etc. in East Delhi.

This initiative is a great learning opportunity for all of us at Vidya & Child and we hope that our

experience in working with the community – children and families - in a process and child-centric

manner would enable us to bring about a positive change in processes, learning environment and

overall motivation levels of all the stakeholders at the school.

Vidya & Child’s programmes — academics, arts & performing arts and life skills - spread across all

age groups from Nursery to Class XII and beyond. All its programmes are built keeping the child as

the focus to ensure holistic development.

Vidya & Child has seen some of its children through a complete education cycle. Those who joined

us in primary years have completed graduation and are pursuing jobs and some are even into post -

graduate courses. We strongly believe that for a child to complete education and acquire a skill in a

chosen field, it would take a minimum 12-15 years of perseverance and commitment from all stake-

holders — Vidya & Child, parents, donors, friends and well wishers. This support is imperative for a

child to avail the benefits of the education process that exists in the country today.

Team Vidya & Child is grateful to all who have shown their belief in our work and would look forward

to your continued support through this incredible journey.

Warm regards, Supriya Akhaury

BELIEFS

-6-

The purpose of education is to build a platform for a child

To learn and grow

To explore and identify with himself / herself

To become a self aware individual with ability to make his / her own ‘right’ decisions in all facets of life.

To become aware of his / her surroundings

(family, friends, community and the world at large)

To continue learning and identify a career path of his / her interest area through which he / she can sustain himself and his / her family

To enjoy the whole process and experience of learning.

Every child has a right to be educated. Every child has capabilities that need to be explored and channelized.

Every child dreams and yearns to learn, to make a place for himself in society.

OUTREACH

BACKGROUND & GROWTH

Vidya & Child started sixteen years ago, in July 1998, with five-year old Tumpa as the first child. Today,

she is a confident and sincere child pursuing graduation in Fine Arts from New Delhi.

The commitment of Vidya & Child to diligently follow a process-driven, child-centric approach has brought

about many such success stories. Our children are pursuing varied courses like CA; Engineering from

NIT ( Trichy and Rourkela ) ; Hotel Management; Event Management, Business Administration; Cosme-

tology from VLCC Institute; 3D Animation; GNIIT from NIIT and many more. We also have amongst us

several children who are pursuing their chosen fields along with a job in order to support their families. In

addition to academic achievers, some children have also trained to become excellent tabla players and

Kathak dancers through our Arts & Performing Arts Programme.

With the aim of making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children, Vidya & Child continues to

support children who belong to socio-economically marginalized sections of the society. Majority of them

have parents who are illiterate/semi-literate and work as domestic servants, industrial workers, rickshaw-

pullers, street vendors, plumbers and carpenters.

It has been our constant endeavour to broaden our reach and provide education, encouragement and

unstinting support to more and more such sections of the society. Today, we work across 6 different

communities through our various centres, with a staff of over 120 people reaching out to more than 1500

children.

Vidya & Child received further recognition and appreciation when we were approached by our long term

donor Tech Mahindra Foundation to replicate our work in the government schools. As a start, the Arise

Lab School Project was commenced in 2013-14. Under this project, we are working with an EDMC (East

Delhi Municipal Corporation) School in technical partnership with Tech Mahindra Foundation.

Across our centres, there are over 280 children who have been mainstreamed into formal schools and

over 50 children have finished Class XII and are all pursuing higher studies. - 7 -

and appreciate the day-to-day struggles and the hardships faced by these families. Vidya & Child

works with over 1500 children across 6 locations through its various centres. There are over 280

SCHOOL PROGRAMME

Objective : To initiate children into the education process and prepare them for mainstream school Scope : Nursery to Class V with a teacher to student ratio of 1:20 Outreach : 1200+ students

Key Features Internally Developed Level-based Curriculum – Self-paced, non-threatening learning environment

for ‘high achievers’ as well as for ‘slow learners’.

This also helps us in ensuring that children who

are over-aged can be fast tracked and they

complete their primary education at a right age.

In-house Content — Teachers Manuals, Worksheets and Assessment Sheets for all classes and subjects.

Training – Monthly Chapter-wise trainings for teachers to ensure more effective delivery.

Observation & Assessment Reviews – To assess difficulties faced while teaching as well as for identifying learning gaps for appropriate planning and intervention.

Activity Based Learning & Special Assemblies - Subject-wise In-class activities and Computer-Aided Learning enables children to develop their logic and creative skills. Special Assemblies are

conducted in all centres on important themes, personalities and festivals throughout the year.

- 15 -

The whole process has been structured so as to provide valuable insights as feedback. An internally developed level based curriculum helps teachers to engage deeply with children. Learning objectives are defined for each lesson and chapter trainings are done every month to ensure effective delivery by the teachers. Observations, Academic Reviews and Assessments are tools to address issues of implementation and measure achievement of learning objective for every child. The results and feedback thus generated necessitates further improvements in the process.

Page 16: Vidya & child annual report 2013 14

The Singh Family

On the face of it, Fateh Singh and Gayatri Devi will appear to be

unassuming people. But within them is a tremendous flame of

determination and grit that drives the whole family. Fateh Singh is a

fruit vendor at Ambedkar Vihar, Sector 37, Noida. For him, education

of his four young boys is of highest priority despite all the challenges

that he and his family grapple with.

Gayatri Devi, a mother of four children, had never worked before in

her life. But with difficult financial situations that the family was

struggling with, she decided to take up work despite her health

challenges.

Determination of the parents has paid off in a big way for their children who have turned out to be brilliant in their own ways. Vidya & Child works with over 1000 families across 6 different communities and each one of

them daily grapple with all kinds of difficulties and continue to work towards the future of their

children. We derive strength from their trust on us and hope to continue working for each of the

families, help them build their dreams for their children and work towards achieving them.

Page 32: Vidya & child annual report 2013 14

OUR TEAM

Our team is extremely diverse in nature and hence has resulted into a great learning environment

which truly benefits the children and families that we work with. The diversity is seen and felt in all

aspects – very young talented people working shoulder to shoulder with extremely experienced people,

academicians, creative professionals, people from corporate sector, people from development sector,

people from different parts of the country speaking different languages and having diverse back-

grounds….This kind of diversity is what has made us learn from and grow with each other.

Vidya & Child believes that the dynamic nature of the work we do can only be sustained and improved

upon when experienced shoulders are flanked by fresh young minds. This can be practically seen

when a 75 year old retired academic professional works alongside a 25 year old teacher on a daily

basis, when a 21 year old Kathak student supports her Kathak Guru in conducting Kathak classes so

on and so forth.

We have been further blessed due to the fact that many people have continued to be with Vidya &

Child for many years in a row. We celebrate this fact every year in our Annual Meet by felicitating every

person who completes 5 years. It humbles us each day to see the belief that people have shown in the

philosophy, vision and ways of working of the organization.

We are also proud to have amongst us some of the children who studied with Vidya & Child right from

their primary years and are now working with us after completing class XII. They continue to pursue

their education through different institutes along with their job.
