[email protected] Sakshi Bhavita Online Edition www.sakshieducation.com/bhavitha.aspx AVERAGE The average is also called the mean. Sum of all items = Average × Number of items If the averages of two different groups are known, the average of third group made by combining these two groups can be found out. Where m, n are the number of items in two groups and a, b are their averages. Note: The combined average always lies in between the individual averages. The above formula can be applied for more than two groups also. If all the items in a group are addition (or) subtracted (or) multiplied (or) divided by a constant then the new average can be found by adding (or) subtracting (or) multiplying (or) dividing the original average by the constant. MODEL QUESTIONS 1. The average age of 40 students in a class is 15 years. When 10 new students are admitted, the average is increased by 0.2 years. What is the average of the new students? a) 16 years b) 16.5 years c)17 years d)18 years Sol: The sum of ages of 40 students = 40 × 15 = 600 years The average of 40 + 10 = 50 students = 15.2 years The sum of ages of 50 students = 50 × 15.2 = 760 years The sum of ages of 10 new students = 760 – 600 = 160 years Their average = Answer: (a) 2. The average age of A and B is 20 years. If 'C' were to replace A, the average would be 19 and if 'C' were to replace B, the average would be 21. AVERAGE

The average is also called themean.

⇒ Sum of all items =Average × Number of itemsIf the averages of two differentgroups are known, the average of third group made by combiningthese two groups can be foundout.

Where m, n are the number of items in two groups and a, b aretheir averages.

Note: The combined averagealways lies in between theindividual averages. The aboveformula can be applied for morethan two groups also.If all the items in a group areaddition (or) subtracted (or)multiplied (or) divided by a

constant then the new averagecan be found by adding (or)subtracting (or) multiplying (or)dividing the original average bythe constant.

MODEL QUESTIONS1. The average age of 40 students in

a class is 15 years. When 10 newstudents are admitted, theaverage is increased by 0.2 years.What is the average of the newstudents?a) 16 years b) 16.5 yearsc) 1 7 years d) 1 8 years

Sol: The sum of ages of 40 students= 40 × 15 = 600 yearsThe average of 40 + 10 = 50students = 15.2 years⇒ The sum of ages of 50students = 50 × 15.2 = 760 years⇒ The sum of ages of 10 newstudents = 760 – 600 = 160 years

⇒ Their average

=

∴ Answer: (a)2. The average age of A and B is 20

years. If 'C' were to replace A, theaverage would be 19 and if 'C'were to replace B, the averagewould be 21. What are the agesof A, B and C?a)20, 18, 22 b)22, 18, 20

c)18, 20, 22 d)22, 20, 18Sol: Let a, b, c be the average ages of

A, B, C.Given that

⇒ a = (a + b + c) – (b + c)= 60 – 38 = 22Similarly b = 60 – 42 = 18

c = 60 – 40 = 20∴ a = 22, b = 18 and c = 20∴ Answer: (b)

3. The average of 60 numbers is120. Each number is firstincreased by 20, then divided by4 and then subtracted by 20.Then what is the new average?a) 12 b) 16c) 22 d) 15

Sol: We know that the arithmeticoperations operated on the itemscan also be operated on theaverage in same order.∴ New average =

∴ Answer: (d)4. If a, b, c, d and e are five

consecutive odd numbers, their

average isa) 5(a + 4)

b)

c) 5(a + b + c + d + e)d) a + 4

Sol: As they are consecutive oddnumbers we have b = a + 2, c = a+ 4, d = a + 6 and e = a + 8

⇒ Their average =

∴ Answer: (d)5. Of the three numbers, the first is

four times the second and threetimes the third. If the average of all the three numbers is 95, thenthe third number is:a) 57 b) 76c) 60 d) 45

Sol: Let the third number be 4 x thenthe first number = 3 × 4 x = 12 x

Average of three numbers =

∴ Third number = 4 × 15 = 60∴ Answer: (c)

6. The average age of a family of

five persons is 20 years. If theyoungest member is 8 years old, what was the average age of thefamily at the birth time of theyoungest member?a) 12 years b) 15 yearsc) 18 years d) 16 years

Sol: The sum of ages of all 5 familymembers at present =5 × 20 = 100 years.Excluding youngest member, theaverage age of 4 members atpresent

At the time of birth of youngesti.e. 8 years ago, their average =23 – 8 = 15 years∴ Answer: (b)

7. There are Indians and Europeansin an army of 12000. The averageheight of Europeans is 5 '10". Theaverage height of Indians is 5 '9",and the average of entire army is

Find out the number of

Indians in the army.a) 2500 b) 3000

c) 2800 d) 2200Sol: This kind of problems can besolved by a simple technique.

From the above diagram, theaverage of the entire army is

stood at the point in

between Indians and Europeans. Therefore, the number of Europeans

⇒ Number of Indians == 12000 – 9000 = 3000∴ Answer: (b)

8. The average age of 24 boys in aclass is 16 years. If the teacher isincluded and one boy is excludedfrom the group, the averageincreases by one. The age of theteacher is:a) 41 b) 32 c) 45d) Data insufficient

Sol: After inclusion and exclusion, the number of persons is samebut their average becomes 17years. From this data we can atthe most say that the differencebetween the ages of teacher andstudent = 24 yearsBut the age of teacher alonecannot be found so the given datais not sufficient.∴ Answer: (d)

9. A bus travels at a certain averagespeed for a distance of 200 kmand then travels a distance of 300km at an average speed of 10 kmph more than its original speed. If it takes 11 hours to completethe total journey, what is the orig-inal speed of the bus in kmph?a) 40 b) 35
