SVIĆA NA TOPRAGU
Naiva Nova sa Šolte
Još ima uja u svići, i neće se ugasit svitlo na topragu, lumin ima ko užgat.
Tradicija naive na Šolti nastavlja se. Evo nam još jednog Buktenice, evo nam Vice, čiji barba bijaše Eugen – Đenko.
“Eto, to je taj fenomen samoniklosti”, kako je napisala likovna kritičarka Željka Zdelar u predgovoru za samostalnu Vicinu izložbu u Zagrebu. Danima listam slike za ovu izložbu i što ih više gledam, sve sam više zbunjen. Kamo smjestiti ovog samoukog – samoniklog slikara. Ma i ne trebam tražiti neki umjetnički pravac, jednostavno, to je ta neugasla svića sa Šolte. To je Vice koji čini još jedan korak naprijed. “U osnovnoj školi imao sam samo jedinice iz likovnog i glazbenog”, kaže Vice, “a onda sam, ne znam kako ni sam, proslikao prije dvanaest godina i pjevam tenora u muškoj klapi Donjaci Martinci iz Donjega Sela.” Tako ovaj šoltanski slavuj, slikar i ribar krstari svojom okolicom, bilježeći nam jutra, dan, sumrak te lakoćom stvaranja postaje pravi kroničar u likovnom izričaju.
Kompoziciju gradi na kontrastima boja, koja se ponekad u dubini slike pretvara u dugu. Ispred te duge je priča sa Šolte. Svaka je Vicina slika ne samo likovna kompozicija, nego i likovni esej gledan često iz ptičje – čuvitine perspektive. Pokušavajući ovoga šoltanskog ribara smjestiti u neki od brojnih likovnih pravaca, izmiče točno određenje. Iako ga svi svrstavaju u naivu, u potpunosti se ne slažem, pa ga ustoličujem kao sviću na topragu, a likovni pravac osjećam kao Naivu novu sa Šolte.
Gledam jednu sliku nastalu 2009. godine, a na naslovnoj je strani kataloga izložbe održane 2011. godine u galeriji Doma kulture Zvonimir u Solinu. U toj slici vidim sve ono po čemu se Vice razlikuje od drugih slikara. Na čudesan način spaja naivu, amaterizam, akademizam i dječji likovni izričaj. Desna strana slike prikazuje bujnu otočnu floru oslikanu lakim, brzim potezima u jednobojnoj valerskoj gradaciji zelene boje s bljeskovima žutog akcenta, stvarajući uvjerljivu perspektivu
na kojoj bi mu mogli pozavidjeti i mnogi učeni slikari. Lijevo je prikazan dvorac s kulama i utvrdama modulirajući tople boje, što mogu svrstati u dobar amaterizam. Pointilističkim pristupom oslikava grmove i cvijeće što je u duhu naive, dok je obala koja se spaja s morem i nebom kao rad vješte dječje ruke zaljubljene u akvarel. More je nebo, a nebo je more.
Sve je to nadrealni prikaz šoltanskih motiva koji lebde iznad mora i neba. Zeleni brodići u modrom moru uvala koje obvezno prati tovar u pratnji ćuvite na samaru, više zainteresirane za tovara nego za događanja oko sebe.
I tako od slike do slike, u radosti življenja na otoku i raskoši boja koje Vice slaže intuicijom. Ovo je slikarstvo od srca kojemu nije cilj samodopadnost; ono je onaj drugi dio dana kada slikar nije ribar nego slikopisac vlastitoga Otoka.
Otoka na kojem je ispunio želju svoga barbe Đenka te mu napravio jedinu kuću naive na Sredozemlju, a koji je uvršten među pedeset najpoznatijih umjetnika naive s motivima mora.
Tako Vice nije dozvolio da se svića ugasi, nego karakteristično sretnim likovnim izričajem nastavlja pričati svoje likovne priče na Otoku.
Tovar, pobjednik-kralj naših težaka u centru je zbivanja, nepobjediv, ponosan na odličje oko vrata što ga opjeva u svojoj himni Dalmacije barba Ljubo, nije više lumin sjećanja nego uvijek svjetlo opstanka i pobjede otočana od davnina, a luč drite ko kolone nosi naš Šoltanin Vice.

A GUARDIAN OF HEARTH’S FIRE
Naiva Nova of Šolta
There is still some oil left in a candle, and the light won’t go out, there is still someone to keep it on.
The tradition of naive art continues on the island of Šolta, in the work of yet another Buktenica, Vice, a nephew of the late painter Eugen Buktenica who was known on the island as Đenko.
It is the phenomenon of self-growth, wrote the art critic Željka Zdelar in her preface to exhibition catalogue of Vice’s solo exhibition in Zagreb. I have been looking at his paintings for days, and the more I look, the more confused I get. To which art movement does this self-educated, self-grown painter belong? There is actually no need to look for an appropriate art movement – he is that unextinguished light from Šolta. It is Vice, who makes another step forward. “In primary school, I had the lowest marks in Art and Music”, says Vice, “and then, much to my surprise, I started to paint twelve years ago, and later to sing in the klapa Donjaci Martinci from the village of Donje Selo.” And so this nightingale from Šolta, a painter and a fisherman, cruises around the island documenting effortlessly its mornings, days, and twilights, becoming in the process a true chronicler in his artistic expression.
He builds his compositions on contrasting colours that sometimes, in the depth of a painting, turn into a rainbow. In front of the rainbow, there is a story from the life of Šolta. Vice’s paintings are more than art compositions; they are art essays seen from a bird’s – an owl’s – eye view. This fisherman’s art resists categorization. Although he is considered to be a naive painter, I couldn’t completely agree; in my view, he is a guardian of hearth’s fire, and I see the whole movement as Naiva Nova of Šolta.
I’m looking at a 2009 painting that is on the cover of the exhibition catalogue from the exhibition at Dom kulture in Solin in 2011. In this painting I see everything that sets Vice apart from other painters. He is able to combine naive art, amateurism, academism
and a childlike artistic expression in an extraordinary way. In the right part of the painting there is the island’s lush vegetation painted with light, quick brush strokes in different shades of green, with sudden flashes of yellow, creating a perspective so convincing that it could inspire envy in many formally-educated painters. On the left, there is a castle with towers and fortresses in warm colours, an example of a good amateurism. Using a pointillist technique, he paints bushes and flowers in the naive art tradition, while the shore merging together with the sea and the sky resembles the work of a gifted child in love with watercolours. The sea is the sky, and the sky is the sea.
The Šolta’s motifs are presented in a surrealistic mode, as they hang in the air above the sea. Small green fisherman’s boats rest in the blue sea of the island’s bays, always accompanied by a donkey with an owl on his back, which is more interested in the donkey than in what is happening around her.
And so it goes from one painting to another; the joy of living on the island and the opulence of colours that Vice combines intuitively. This is heart-felt art that does not want to be self-sufficient; it is all about that other part of the day when a painter stops being a fisherman and becomes a narrator, through painting, of his Island’s life.
It is the island on which Vice has established the only house of naive art on the Mediterranean, thus fulfilling the wish of his uncle Đenko who was included among the world’s 50 most well-known naive painters of marine motifs. This way, Vice has never allowed the light to go out; instead, through his distinctly joyful artistic expression, he continues to tell his art stories on the Island.
A donkey, that king victorious of our peasants, often in the focus of his paintings, proudly sporting the medal around his neck, sung about in the famous song Dalmatino, povišću pritrujena by the late ethnomusicologist and composer Ljubo Stipišić Delmata –that donkey is more than a lantern of memory; it is and has always been the light of survival and victory of the islanders, the light that is carried by Vice, our man from Šolta, who stands upright as a column.

VIcKO BUKTENIcA - Eto to je taj fenomen samoniklosti - kakav osjećaj i pristup slobodnom slikarskom izražavanju, bez povijesnog opterećenja, bez pretenzija, gotovo, čini se, i bez nekog posebnog nastojanja - biti slikar, umjetnik... Naime, dobiva se dojam lakoće i spontanosti... Istina, živio je u blizini slavnog «barbe», ali zanimljiva je činjenica da je počeo slikati nakon smrti Eugena Buktenice. No, nešto je svakako akceptirao, možda i nesvjesno, no sve to što je prihvatio - pretvorio je u svoj stil. Buktenica mlađi odlikuje se brzim potezom i upečatljivim duktusom, što pridonosi stanovitom ekspresivnom ugođaju njegovih veduta.
Također, posjeduje zanimljiv osjećaj za insert, što svjedoči kompozicija Prova, slobodno se izražava bojom, koristeći se šarenim registrom. Osjećaj za prostor često mu je prilagođen pejzažnim temama, dok u arhitekturalnim prikazima postiže određenu mekoću obrisa, što često nije tako kod većine dalmatinskih naivaca.
Vjerujemo da se zbog navedenih odlika i usudio načiniti portret Eugena Buktenice, čime je uspješno podvukao karakterističnost slikareva lika.
Eugen Buktenica uvršten je među 50 najpoznatijih naivaca u cijelom svijetu, a bez sumnje se može kazati kako je i Vicko na tom putu, te da i u njegovim venama teče krv Eugena Buktenice.
U Grohotama na otoku Šolti, u rodnoj kući Eugena Buktenice otvorena je galerija »Buktenica & Buktenica«.Vicko Buktenica rođen je 1964 g. u Splitu. Živi i radi u Grohotama na otoku Šolti. Slikarstvom se bavi od 1999.g. Član Hrvatskog društva naivnih umjetnika od 2007 g. Dobitnik je nagrade za životno djelo, za poseban doprinos u očuvanju tradicije i kulturnih vrijednosti otoka Šolte.
VIcKO BUKTENIcA - the self-sown phenomenon-the feeling, the approach to free expression in painting, with no historical burden, no pretensions, almost, it seems, without no particular striving-just being a painter, being an artist...The impression is namely of lightness and spontaneity...Though, he lived close to his „barba” (uncle), the reknown naive painter Eugen Buktenica, the interesting thing is that Vicko began to paint only after the death of his „barba”. However, he must have absorbed something, maybe unconsciously, yet whatever he absorbed, he transfomed into his style. Buktenica younger is recognizable for his swift brush-strokes and conspicuous ductus, which contributes to certain expressive atmosphere of his veduta.
He also owns an interesting feeling for insert, to which testifies the composition Prova, freely expresses himself using wide range of colours. His feeling for space is often „custom tailored” to landscape themes, while in arthitecturale representation he achives certain softness of outlines, which is rather uncommon in other dalmatian naive painters.
We believe that the above mentioned qualites led him to dare to portrait Eugene Buktenica, in which he successfully underlined the specific character of this painter.
Eugen Buktenica is among the 50 best known naive painters of the world, and it can be said, witho no doubt whatsoever, that Vicko, his nephew, is also on this trail, that Eugen’s blood (metaphorically speaking) runs through Vicko’s veins.
The art gallery „Buktenica & Buktenica” is opened in the house of birth of Eugene Buktenica, in the village Grohote, on the island of Šolta.
Vicko Buktenica was born in 1954. In Split. He lives and works in Grohote on Šolta. Painter/artist since 1999. The member of croatian Association of the Naive Artists since 2007. Also received the Life Achievement Award for his particular contribution to the conservation of the traditions and the cultural values of the island of Šolta.
