Is Graduate School for You?

• What do graduate students do? 研究生做什么？

– Course-based 以上课为主• Take graduate courses, attend seminars, internship, and exams• Usually no stipend from the professor• Graduate whenever you finish your course

– Research-based 以研究为主• Take less graduate courses, seminars, paper/lab research• Most program provide full stipend for all students• Graduation depends on your supervisor

Is Graduate School for You?

• Your interests 你的兴趣– Do you like the courses?– Do you like research? Even for 3-5 years?

• Your career goals 你的职业规划– What field do you want to get in?– What did they study to get there?– What type of degree are they holding?

How to Apply?

• Step 1: Research 选择学校和专业

• Step 2: Prepare the Documents 准备文件

• Step 3: After the Application 申请后

• Step 4: Interview 面试

• Step 5: Relax 放松

Step 1: Research

• Start early 尽早开始

– Do a research about the field you’re interested in• Who? What? Where?

– What are the admission requirements?• GPA, GRE, GMAT, other documents ...

• Work and research experiences very helpful

• Talk to people 多咨询，多交流

Step 2: Prepare the Documents

• Check what to prepare from the admission website– Official transcript (order a lot in advance)– Reference letters– Resume, Curriculum Vitae (CV), Personal Statement (PS)– Let the profs know you, give them at least 2 weeks, say thank

you at the end

• Personal Statement (PS) 个人陈述– What have you achieved, life story, struggles you had, why int

erested in this program, etc.

Step 3: After the Application

• Confirmation– Call them, and ask for approximate time

• Waiting …

Step 4: Interview

• Who review your application? 谁负责评审？– Department committee members

• How long does it take? 大概要花多长时间？– They schedule meetings until they finish the applications

• Interview? 为什么要面试？– There’re some questions in your application, and they want

to clarify it

• Good or Bad? 获得面试是好消息吗？– It is a sign that they’re really interested in you– However, getting a good interview doesn’t guarantee an off

er of admission

• Questions they ask in the interview? 他们会问你什么？– Anything that’s in your application– What have you learned, done, and achieved?

Step 5: Relax

• If you get an offer, congratulations!– Arrange your arrival about 2 weeks before you start

graduate study– Enjoy your graduate school!

• If you don’t get the offer– Call them– Ask why– Future directions– Other options
