NATIONAL FLAG
A horizontal tricolour of deep saffron (kesariya) atthe top, white in the middle and dark green at thebottom in equal proportion. The ratio of width of theFlag to its length is two to three. In the centre of the

white band is a navy blue wheel which represents thechakra. Its design is that of the wheel which appears onthe abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Itsdiameter approximates to the width of the white bandand it has twenty four (24) spokes. The design of theNational Flag was adopted by the Constituent Assemblyof India on 22 July, 1947. Its use and display areregulated by the Indian Flag Code.
NATIONAL ANTHEM
Jana-gana-mana-adhinayaka Jaya he
The anthem jana-gana-mana, composed originallyin Bengali language by Rabindra Nath Tagore wasadopted in its Hindi version by the ConstituentAssembly of India as the National Anthem of India on24 January, 1950. It was first sung on 27 December,1911 at the Calcutta Session of the Indian NationalCongress. The complete song consists of five stanzas.The first stanza contains the full version of the NationalAnthem. The playing time of the full version of theNational Anthem is about 52 seconds. The playing timeof a short version consisting of the first and last lines ofthe stanza of the National Anthem is about 20 seconds.
NATIONAL SONG
The song Vande-Matram composed by BankimChand Chaterji was adopted by the ConstituentAssembly of India as the National Song of India. It wasfirst sung at the 1896 Session of the Indian NationalCongress. It was translated into English language by SriArvindo.
STATE EMBLEMThe State Emblem is an adaptation from the
Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. In the original, thereare four lions standing back to back, mounted on anabacus with a frieze carrying sculptures in high relief ofan elephant, a galloping horse, a bull and a lionseparated by intervening wheels over a bell-shapedlotus. Carved out of a single block of polished sand-stone the capital is crowned by the wheel of the law(Dharma-Chakra).
In the state Emblem, adopted by the government ofIndia, on 26 January, 1950, only three lions are visible,the fourth being hidden from view. The wheel appearsin relief in the centre of the abacus with a bull on theright and a horse on the left and the outlines of the otherwheels on extreme right and left; the bell-shaped lotushas been omitted. The Words Satyameva Jayate fromMundaka Upanishad, meaning Truth alone Triumphsare inscribed below the abacus in Devanagari script.

NATIONAL CALENDAR
The National Calendar based on the Saka Erawith Chaitra as its first month and a normal year of365 days was adopted from 22 March, 1957 along withthe Gregorian Calendar for the following officialpurposes
(A) Gazette of India.
(B) News broadcast by All India Radio.
(C) Calendars issued by the Government of India.
(D) Government Communications addressed to themembers of the public.
Dates of the National Calendar have a permanentcorrespondence with dates of the Gregorian calendar1 Chaitra falling on 22 March normally and on 21 Marchin the leap year.
NATIONAL ANIMAL
The magnificent tiger, panthera tigris (Linnaeous)is a striped animal. It has a thick yellow coat of fur withdark stripes. The combination of grace, strength, agilityand enormous power has earned the tiger its pride ofplace as the National Animal of India.
NATIONAL BIRD
The Indian Peacock, pavo cristatus (Linnaeus), theNational Bird of India, is a colourful swan-sized birdwith a fan shaped crest of feathers, a white patch underthe eye and a long slender neck. The male of the speciesis more colourful than the female, with a glistening bluebreast and neck spectacular bronze-green train ofaround 200 elongated feathers. The female is brownish,slightly smaller than the male, and lacks the train. Theeleborate courtship dance of the male, fanning out thetail and preening its feathers, is a gorgeous sight. Thepeacock enjoys protection from the people as it is nevermolested for religious and sentimental reasons. It isfully protected under the Indian Wildlife ProtectionAct1972.
PHYSICAL BACKGROUND

India has one of the largest road networks in theworld, aggregating to about 33 lakh km at present. Ofall types of Highways and roads, the National Highwaysand the State Highways account respectively 96,26072and 1,31,899 km length.
ALL INDIA RADIOS NETWORKAll India Radio presently (February 2017) has 219
full-fledged Radio stations with studios and 610broadcast transmitters 143 are medium wave 48 SW(Short Wave) and 419 FM transmitters which provideradio coverage to 92 per cent of the population andreaches 9918 per cent area of the country. All IndiaRadio covers 23 languages and 146 dialects in homeservices. In external services, it covers 27 languages,17 national and foreign languages.
Expansion of FM ServicesIn view of thesuperior quality of FM broadcasts it is gaining popu-larity in the country. AIR has also therefore undertakento expand its FM network to achieve about 50 per centpopulation coverage after the completion of ongoingTenth Plan. The FM service uses a large bandwidth toprovide a programme service of high-fidelity.

Indias Ist Television centre came into being on 15September, 1959 as a pilot project.
In 1976, Doordarshan which was all India Radiostelevision arm until then become a separate depart-ment.

Meghalaya registered the highest decadal growthrate of 2782 per cent while Nagaland the lowest 006per cent.
Population DensityPopulation density is derivedas the number of persons per square kilometre. Thepopulation density has gone up from 325 in 2001 to 382
persons in 2011. In 1901 it was 77 persons per sq.kilometre.
Sex RatioSex ratio is defined as the number offemales per thousand males. In India, sex ratio is 943females per thousand males. There has been aimprovement by 10 points to 943 per thousands males.Kerala has a higher number of females than males, 1084females against thousand males. In the Indian context,this sex ratio and above can be considered as favourableto females.
LiteracyThe literacy rate in the country(including Jammu & Kashmir) is 730 per cent (809%Males, 646% Females) Kerala retained its position bybeing on top with a 9391 per cent (9602% Males and9198% Females) literacy rate in the country. Biharstood at the bottom with a literacy rate of 6382%(7339% Males and 5333% Females).
